This book was released on 2010 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Seafloor geology and potential benthic habitats were mapped in Muir Inlet, Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, Alaska, using multibeam sonar, ground-truth information, and geological interpretations. Muir Inlet is a recently deglaciated fjord that is under the influence of glacial and paraglacial marine processes. High glacially derived sediment and meltwater fluxes, slope instabilities, and variable bathymetry result in a highly dynamic estuarine environment and benthic ecosystem. We characterize the fjord seafloor and potential benthic habitats using the Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS) recently developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and NatureServe. Substrates within Muir Inlet are dominated by mud, derived from the high glacial debris flux. Water-column characteristics are derived from a combination of conductivity temperature depth (CTD) measurements and circulation-model results. We also present modern glaciomarine sediment accumulation data from quantitative differential bathymetry. These data show Muir Inlet is divided into two contrasting environments: a dynamic upper fjord and a relatively static lower fjord. The accompanying maps represent the first publicly available high-resolution bathymetric surveys of Muir Inlet. The results of these analyses serve as a test of the CMECS and as a baseline for continued mapping and correlations among seafloor substrate, benthic habitats, and glaciomarine processes"--Abstract.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alaska coast is being surveyed using the ShoreZone system, which has been widely used to map the coasts of the Pacific Northwest. This report provides information on geomorphic and biological features of 1,905 km. (1,183 miles) of shorelines that were surveyed in 2011 in Southwest Alaska. The study area in this report covers the Alaska Peninsula south of Port Moller (that is, the southern end of the peninsula) and nearby islands (but excludes much of the northern side east of Izembek Lagoon).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides guidance to the Gulf Ecosystem Monitoring (GEM) program to help ensure that it is based on a a science plan that is robust, far-reaching, and scientifically sound. The report commends the Trustee Council for its foresight in setting aside funds to create a trust fund to provide long-term research support; it notes that the GEM program offers an unparalleled opportunity to increase understanding of how large marine ecosystems function and change over time. The report outlines elements of a sound long-term science plan, including conceptual foundation, scope and geographic focus, organizational structure, community involvement, data and information management, and synthesis, modeling, and evaluation.

Download or read book Protocol Narrative for Marine Ecosystem Monitoring in the Southwest Alaska Network of National Parks written by National Park Service and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-07-31 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document provides a comprehensive plan for long-term monitoring of nearshore marine resources in the National Park Service's (NPS) Southwest Alaska Network (SWAN) parks. The objective of plan is to assist managers in preserving park resources by documenting changes to these resources over time and suggesting possible causes for these changes. The monitoring encompasses all major elements of the nearshore trophic web, from primary producers to apex predators, and focuses on six vital signs: kelp and seagrasses, marine intertidal invertebrates, marine birds, black oystercatchers, sea otters, and marine water chemistry and quality.
Book Synopsis Great Sandy Marine Park Benthic Habitat Mapping Project by :
Download or read book Great Sandy Marine Park Benthic Habitat Mapping Project written by and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Benthic habitat mapping was identified as a knowledge gap in the Ecological Character Description prepared for the Great Sandy Strait Ramsar site and was unavailable for the initial zoning of the marine park in 2006. To address this information gap, the GSMP benthic mapping project was initiated to create the first systematic benthic map of the region.
