Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A naïve English farmer’s wife travels alone to Poznan, Poland, to visit the Zachodni Institute; an archive that holds records of the wartime Polish Resistance. It is the start of an adventure into history, and all that had been hidden since the Nuremberg Trials where Stalin and dismissed all evidence submitted by the Poles and the ensuing 45-year Russian occupation of Poland ensured their silence. On a quest to distinguish fact from fiction, Cynthia Engelmann investigates the truth of an unpublished manuscript bequeathed to her upon the death of Maria Weychan. Maria’s memoire had revealed an extraordinary tale of intrigue, romance, imprisonment and survival, as told a by a young Polish dancer in Berlin after the end of World War II. She had survived life in a camp with her mother for longer than had previously been thought possible. Had they collaborated with the Germans to protect themselves? Finding herself part of a movement to collate events of history previously hidden and silenced, Cynthia uncovers the leads of the evidence to share the truth of Maria’s memoire.

Starting in the days we fell in love, when with big dreams we started on our life's journey. Living in a socialist country we faced many challenges but being young and inexperienced we believed nothing could stop us from reaching our goals. After twenty years of persistent work, we were successful but living in constant fear of the communist leaders because of our different beliefs. We realized that money, cars and houses didn't mean happiness. Life without FREEDOM is miserable. Leaving everything behind, we miraculously escaped socialism with our teenage boys. America gave us an opportunity to start a new life. We faced enormous obstacles. On the road of life we experienced everything... disappointments, hate, success, joy, happiness and painful tears which helped us appreciate every moment of life. Our story is one of a kind. It gives a glimpse to the history, political and nationality differences in Slovakia and how serious and funny life could be.

Book excerpt: Based on an award-winning international research project and photo exhibition, this poignant and beautifully illustrated book examines the experiences of African American GIs in Germany and the unique insights they provide into the civil rights struggle at home and abroad. Thanks in large part to its military occupation of Germany after World War II, America’s unresolved civil rights agenda was exposed to worldwide scrutiny as never before. At the same time, its ambitious efforts to democratize German society after the defeat of Nazism meant that West Germany was exposed to American ideas of freedom and democracy to a much larger degree than many other countries. As African American GIs became increasingly politicized, they took on a particular significance for the Civil Rights Movement in light of Germany’s central role in the Cold War. While the effects of the Civil Rights Movement reverberated across the globe, Germany represents a special case that illuminates a remarkable period in American and world history. Book excerpt: The pathway to living a life with freedom often comes from a journey through resistance and restrictions. Facing Maria shares an honest, down-to-earth account about a journey through adversity, restriction, abuse and addiction, then ultimately, into freedom. It is a journey of hope that is courageous, inspiring and achievable for anyone who is faced with challenges, adversities and limitations throughout any stage of their lives. “Finding our freedom comes through squarely facing ourselves in the mirror, accepting the things that cannot be changed, and ultimately, in changing the narrative and the ‘story’ that we tell about and to ourselves”.

Stewart and the Roots of Black Political Thought tells a crucial, almost-forgotten story of African Americans of early nineteenth-century America. In 1833, Maria W. Stewart (1803–1879) told a gathering at the African Masonic Hall on Boston’s Beacon Hill: “African rights and liberty is a subject that ought to fire the breast of every free man of color in these United States.” She exhorted her audience to embrace the idea that the founding principles of the nation must extend to people of color. Otherwise, those truths are merely the hypocritical expression of an ungodly white power, a travesty of original democratic ideals. Like her mentor, David Walker, Stewart illustrated the practical inconsistencies of classical liberalism as enacted in the US and delivered a call to action for ending racism and addressing gender discrimination. Between 1831 and 1833, Stewart’s intellectual productions, as she called them, ranged across topics from true emancipation for African Americans, the Black convention movement, the hypocrisy of white Christianity, Black liberation theology, and gender inequity. Along with Walker’s Appeal to the Coloured Citizens of the World, her body of work constitutes a significant foundation for a moral and political theory that is finding new resonance today—insurrectionist ethics. In this work of recovery, author Kristin Waters examines the roots of Black political activism in the petition movement; Prince Hall and the creation of the first Black masonic lodges; the Black Baptist movement spearheaded by the brothers Thomas, Benjamin, and Nathaniel Paul; writings; sermons; and the practices of festival days, through the story of this remarkable but largely unheralded woman and pioneering public intellectual.

Driven out of Krakow during the invasion by the German Army, Maria and her sister Stefania flee for the safety of their country village only to be rounded up and sent to forced labor in Greater Germania. The loveliness of their new home in an alpine village in Austria belies the hardship and loneliness they endure among strangers in a strange land. It's Maria's faith that keeps her going and it's her faith that gives her the strength to provide for and protect her love child after a dangerous secret liaison with one of the sons of the landowner for whom she toiled. Liberated by the American Army, Maria miraculously finds herself in a Polish Army camp in Italy where she has a whirlwind romance with a handsome young war hero, who takes her on an incredible journey that brings them to yet another land and an uncertain post-war future.

Unfortunately, Deaton has no idea that he is about to witness an event that will change his life forever. It is a hot summer day when Maria, one of Deaton's OB/ GYN patients, slips into a coma after mysterious abdominal pain even after she delivers a healthy baby. Exasperated after repeatedly expressing his concerns for her care to his superiors, Deaton is devastated as he watches his crucially ill patient suffer death by neglect, an unthinkable crime brazenly covered up by those in authority. As Deaton details his early life and hospital events, he highlights a shocking phenomenon present behind the White Curtain that tells a story as powerful as it is important. This thoughtful, gripping memoir portrays an untold side of the field of medicine and relays an unforgettable message: when a doctor sacrifices everything to save a patient, the doctor is saved too.
