Book excerpt: Early modern European society took a serious view of blasphemy, and drew upon a wide range of sanctions - including the death penalty - to punish those who cursed, swore and abused God. Whilst such attitudes may appear draconian today, this study makes clear that in the past, blasphemy was regarded as a very real threat to society. Based on a wealth of primary sources, including court records, theological and ecclesiastical writings and official city statutes, Francisca Loetz explores verbal forms of blasphemy and the variety of contexts within which it could occur. Honour conflicts, theological disputation, social and political provocation, and religious self-questioning all proved fertile ground for accusations of blasphemy, and her contention - that blasphemers often meant more than they said - reveals the underlying complexity of an apparently simple concept. This innovative approach interprets cases of verbal blasphemy as 'speech actions' that reflect broader political, social and religious concerns. Cases in Protestant Zurich are compared with the situation in Catholic Lucerne and related to findings in other parts of Europe (Germany, France, England, Italy) to provide a thorough discussion of different historical approaches to blasphemy - ecclesiastical, legal, intellectual, social, and cultural - in the Early Modern period. In so doing the book offers intriguing suggestions about what a cultural history of religiousness could and should be. By linking a broad overview of the issue of blasphemy, with case studies from Zurich and Lucerne, this book provides a fascinating insight into a crucial, but often misunderstood aspect of early-modern society. The conclusions reached not only offer a much fuller understanding of the situation in Zurich, but also have resonance for all historians of Reformation Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Introduction to Mariology, Fr. Manfred Hauke provides a synthesis of Mariology and the biblical fundaments and development of Marian doctrine. While it works as a comprehensive introduction suitable for courses on the subject, it is in reality a panoramic view on the entire Marian doctrine, and as such will be essential for the theological formation of seminarians, priests, theologians, and all kinds of educated Catholics. With an unparalleled bibliographic citation of Marian literature across a dozen languages, it is also a perfect gateway to further research on the subject. It begins with Biblical doctrine, which is important especially for the dialogue with Protestant denominations: Catholic Mariology can be traced in its “embryonic” state already in Holy Scripture. From there Hauke presents a historical overview of the whole development of Marian doctrine, before developing further historical details in the subsequent chapters dedicated to systematic issues. The first systematic step approaches the figure of Mary through her role in the mystery of the Covenant between God and redeemed humanity; her being “Mother of God” and companion of the Redeemer is the “fundamental principle.” Then the four established Marian dogmas are presented: divine maternity, virginity, Immaculate Conception (in a chapter on Mary’s holiness more broadly), and bodily Assumption. A close look is given to maternal mediation which includes a part dedicated to the “Mater Unitatis”. A stand alone chapter is dedicated to Marian apparitions; authentic apparitions are presented as a part of prophetic charisma. The last chapter presents the basics on Marian devotion which culminates in the consecration to Mary (as a response to her maternal mediation). Already available in Spanish, Italian, Portugese, and Korean, this landmark work is published here for the first time in English.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new 2022 translation into American English of Philipp Melanchthon's 1530 Augsburg Confession (Confessio Augustana) and his expansive defense of this important Protestant Confession, his "Apologia der Konfession" published soon after. These translations are followed by the original German manuscripts. This is volume IV in The Complete Works of Philipp Melanchthon The Augsburg Confession is one of the founding documents of Protestantism, directly leading to the Edict of Worms and the formal excommunication of Luther and his compatriots. The Confessio Augustana, written by Melanchthon in New Latin and in Early New High German, was composed by Melanchthon on behalf of the entire Wittenberg Reformation as a polemic against not only Emperor Charles V’s Catholicism, but also other Protestant movements, particularly the Anabaptists and the “enemy of the sacraments” (the Zwinglians). Later editions attempted to include the Zwinglian version of Reformed teachings. Zwingli penned his own version at the exact same time, called the Confessio Tetrapolitana. This confession was refuted by the emperor in June of 1530 in the Confutio Augustana, the Augsburg Refutation. Melanchthons’ Apologia Confessionis Augustanae was in answer to this document, which Melanchthon completed in 1531. The Roman church agreed with the bulk of the articles (Articles 1-3, 5, 8-14, 16-18 and 20), pointing out that the Wittenberg Reformation was deliberately misrepresenting Catholic teachings. Still, the Confutatio condemned the simplistic dichotomy of Faith and Works, and argued that is was based on an over-emphasis on Paul's letters excluding books such as the Book of James, which Martin Luther believed was "inspired by the Devil". This confession was critical for the Religious Wars of the 16th and 17th centuries. The military alliance of the Protestants, the Schmalkaldic League, made the Confessio Augustana the basis of its confederation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of the saints became a theological dilemma for scholars and laity alike throughout the Reformation era. As Protestants tried to remove themselves from the hold of the Catholic Church, the cult of the saints remained a formidable presence. Through the analysis of 180 pamphlets published by reformers in German-speaking Europe, Carol Heming shows the struggle Protestants faced in purging the cult of the saints from their culture and religion. Heming examines why Reformation leaders so strongly and universally denounced the cult of the saints and whether the holy patrons disappeared from Protestant areas without benefit of champion or defender. Complete scriptural references used in the pamphlets against the saints and images are included.
