Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marginal Notes Macaulay's library contained many books, of no great intrinsic value in themselves, which are readable, from the first page to the last, for the sake of his manuscript notes inscribed in immense profusion down their margins. He was contented, when the humour took him, to amuse his solitary hours with such productions as Percival Stockdale's memoirs, and the six volumes of Miss Anna Seward's Letters. His running commentary on those trivial and pretentious authors was as the breaking of a butterfly beneath the impact of a cheerful steam - hammer. "Ingenious," (so Miss Seward wrote to a correspondent, ) "is your parallel between the elder and the modern Erasmus." "The modern Erasmus," said Macaulay, "is Darwin. That anybody should have thought of making a parallel between him and the elder Erasmus is odd indeed. They had nothing but the name in common. One might as well make a parallel between Caesar and Sir Caesar Hawkins." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Winchester Word-Book: A Collection of Past Present Notions The history of an old man is of infinitely more interest than the promise of a young one. And so, probably, of words: the past of "ferk" is more interesting than the future of "boycott" and the old words which have dropped out of classical English, but survived in the dialects, appeal to us with a force quite beyond that of the consciously created slang which springs up from day to day in schools, the Universities, or sporting circles. It is in this association with past ages that much of the language of Winchester College can fairly claim a position which slang cannot: we have not made it, we have inherited it, and its survival is not a little remarkable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes and Outlines To effect the savings that come from large-scale production, the modern manufacturer must employ people and sell to people with whom he cannot get into close personal relations. They must be influenced through the printed page or the typed sheet, and so we find him developing departments of correspondence, hiring men to guide him in his relations with his employees, giving much thought to letters which he uses in sales campaigns, and establishing a department to instruct his workmen and office help on the routine of their daily work and the scope of their duties. In other words, the business man of to-day of necessity puts great emphasis on the literary end of his work. He issues a monthly and weekly journal to keep his employees contented, another to hearten his salesmen, and a third, perhaps, to impress his customers with the spirit of good will and service in his organization. He develops charts and books of standard practise instruction; house memoranda fly back and forth from department to department; mail comes and goes in such large quantities that it must be opened and sealed by machine. The library in the plant keeps his people abreast of technical and business improvements. Perhaps even a trained writer prepares journal articles about the business, its methods and its founder. In short, modern large-scale production gives to language and to print an importance never before claimed for them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Club of One: Passages From the Note-Book of a Man Who Might Have Been Sociable; With Marginal Summary A pretty good-sized drawer, locked and padlocked, was found filled with the manuscripts form which these Passages were taken. I have presumed to give them the title they bear, the author of them having departed this life. It is very evident they were not designed for the public. They were written purely for occupation, there is not a doubt of it. The author, a reader and thinker, though an invalid, could not be idle. He read and he thought, and sometimes he recorded. He has said some things that have not been said before, and has said them in his own way. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
