Book excerpt: Modern prosumer small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) have eliminated many historical barriers to aerial remote sensing and photogrammetric survey data generation. The relatively low cost and operational ease of these platforms has driven their adoption for numerous geospatial applications including professional surveying and mapping. However, significant debate exists among geospatial professionals and academics regarding prosumer sUAS ability to achieve “survey-grade” geospatial accuracy ≤ 0.164 ft. in their derivative survey data. To address this debate, a controlled accuracy test experiment was conducted in accordance with federal standards whereby prosumer sUAS geospatial accuracies were reported between 15.367 ft. – 0.09 ft. horizontally and 496.734 ft. – 0.330 ft. vertically at the 95% confidence level. These results suggest prosumer sUAS derived survey data fall short of “survey-grade” accuracy in this experiment. Therefore, traditional surveying instruments and methods should not be relinquished in favor of prosumer sUAS for complex applications requiring “surveygrade” accuracy at this time.

Commercially available aircraft are just now starting to acquire environmental awareness beyond GPS positioning, which is extremely important for many of the more advanced tasks envisioned for these machines. The work carried out in support of this thesis expands the autonomy capabilities of small unmanned aircraft by designing, implementing, and testing a novel multi-camera visual positioning and mapping system that allows the aircraft to compute its location relative to its surroundings for the purposes of autonomous landing. The thesis begins with a concise review of the various fields pertinent to small aircraft pose estimation using visual sensing, and introduces the parallel tracking and mapping (PTAM) algorithm that served as the starting point for the algorithm developed in this work. Also covered is the physical hardware used for all experiments, including the X8 quadrotor aircraft, and details of the software middleware layer that connects various components of the system. The second part of the thesis details modifications to PTAM that result in the new multi-camera parallel tracking and mapping (MCPTAM) algorithm, such as a camera model based on the Taylor spherical projection, a new map initialization method that supports multiple non-overlapping cameras, and a new method for calibrating the extrinsic poses of these cameras, which offers a measurable improvement over the commonly used extrinsic calibration solution. This is followed by experimental validation of MCPTAM against data from an indoor motion capture system. Then, an extensive testing campaign through a series of outdoor flight experiments of increasing difficulty highlights MCPTAM's strengths and weaknesses.The third part of the thesis introduces the extended Kalman filter that is used to fusepose estimates from MCPTAM with the aircraft's inertial measurement unit (IMU); convergence of various filter states is experimentally verified. The extended Kalman filter produces smootherpose and velocity estimates suitable for feedback into an aircraft position controller, thus enabling closure of the control loop. A closed-loop position controller is implemented on the X8 aircraft for the first time and demonstrated both indoors and outdoors for waypoint following and landing maneuvers. The last part of the thesis explores and experimentally evaluates different methods for computing the covariance of MCPTAM's pose estimate, which has applications for both the extended Kalman filter, as well as deciding when to add new data (keyframes) to the map of visual points. Finally, the applicability of the pose covariance norm to keyframe selection is experimentally tested on the X8 with two cameras, and it is found to outperform a method commonly used in other algorithms when the cameras observe scenes of differing depth." --

Book excerpt: Invasive plants are non-native species that have detrimental economic, ecological, environmental or environmental effects on their surroundings and can spread rapidly. In aquatic ecosystems, they are particularly harmful because they can affect water quality and availability by disrupting flow patterns. In areas such as the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta in California, USA, management programs are in place which use imaging spectroscopy to map and track annual changes in invasive species patterns to inform treatment. These maps are constructed from imagery collected by an airborne imaging spectrometer. Advances in unmanned aircraft systems have enabled small imaging spectrometers such as the Headwall Photonics Nano-Hyperspec (Nano) to provide even higher spatial resolution imagery than manned flights. In this case a 5.1 cm pixel spatial resolution imagery in the VIS-NIR (400-1000 nm) was gathered by the Nano, while HyMap captured 1.7 m VIS-SWIR (400-2500 nm) imagery. For species mapping applications, the higher spatial resolution provided by the Nano allows detection of invasive weeds before they spread over larger areas. To compare the mapping capabilities and utility of unmanned aircraft and manned aircraft for mapping invasive species, aerial imagery was collected concurrently at a wetland study site using a Nano on board a unmanned aircraft (DJI M600P) and the HyMap sensor mounted on board a piloted aircraft (1975 Rockwell International 500-S). Maps were then created from similar remote sensing products using a random forest model. The Nano-Hyperspec was capable of identifying smaller patches of invasive plants, which did not appear in maps generated from the HyMap sensor. Three experiments were used to determine input criteria for the best model for map creation, which included training and test data proportions, flight direction, and acquisition. Results showed that increasing training data proportion resulted in higher median overall accuracies but the decrease in test data caused an increase in distribution width and interquartile range of model accuracy. Acquisition date also impacted model performance, but there were several confounding factors making it difficult to ascertain which, if a single variable was responsible. Flight direction relative to solar position was also significant to model performance; the Nano-generated map performed best when trained on labelled data collected in both flight directions then applied or tested only on data acquired while flying away from the solar plane. Map comparisons between those made from the Nano and those from the HyMap sensor show that the Nano performs as well as the HyMap as a source for spectral data to generate classification maps, with a higher overall accuracy for 2019, and comparable overall accuracies for other years. In addition, the higher resolution of the Nano imagery allowed detection of patches of water hyacinth present in the study site that the HyMap maps could not. However, it would not be feasible to operate the Nano as a replacement to the HyMap despite its improved detection capabilities to due to area coverage limitations. But the Nano could be used to supplement an existing invasive species management program to build an improved map of targeted areas.
