Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry W Cabarrus, Jr's formative years occurred during the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. A young black male seeking self-identity through family and work, Henry struggled to find himself amidst the surrounding social cacophony. In 1954, the US Supreme Court ruled that segregation in US schools was unconstitutional. The decision kicked off a massive resistance movement in Virginia, where Henry's family lived. In response to the resistance, it was ruled that operation of public schools was a local option for the state's counties and cities, and no provision was made for educating the county's black children. With no education, prospects, or family support, Henry found himself saved from a near suicide attempt. He left Virginia in pursuit of a formal education and his place in the world. College was a struggle, but Henry prevailed, graduating with a 4.0 GPA from Saint Paul's College. Henry's memoir, Many Broken Promises and Yet I Stand!, is part history, part relationships, and part social commentary.

Book excerpt: Two Full Length Novels Broken Promises (Women's Fiction): Matilda King and Johnny Ray Sloan came from successful families, were highly intelligent and had the same interest, yet could barely stand to be in the same room. Something happened over the summer, and the two were faced with commonality neither could ignore. They both had abusive home lives, wanted a "real family," and were highly attracted to the other. The teens gave into their feelings and fell in love-then the real problems began. Problems that followed them into adulthood. Diamond In The Rough: An Ugly Duckling Tale (Traditional Romance): Jewel Swanson knows the music industry better than most. She won her first Grammy at the age ten. By the time she was twelve, she'd learned the darker side of the industry. The vain, shallow side that said she'd never fit the mold to be a true star. That she'd always be an ugly duckling. Record producer, Alex Deveraux, has been in love with Jewel since they were children and she went by the stage name Swansong. Alex understands Jewel's apprehension with his industry, but won't let it stop him. Will his love for her shine through the ugliness of the industry and capture her heart?

Book excerpt: This comprehensive classic textbook represents the most recent approaches to the biblical world by surveying Palestine's social, political, economic, religious and ecological changes from Palaeolithic to Roman eras. Designed for beginners with little knowledge of the ancient world, and with copious illustrations and charts, it explains how and why academic study of the past is undertaken, as well as the differences between historical and theological scholarship and the differences between ancient and modern genres of history writing. Classroom tested chapters emphasize the authenticity of the Bible as a product of an ancient culture, and the many problems with the biblical narrative as a historical source. Neither "maximalist" nor "minimalist'" it is sufficiently general to avoid confusion and to allow the assignment of supplementary readings such as biblical narratives and ancient Near Eastern texts. This new edition has been fully revised, incorporating new graphics and English translations of Near Eastern inscriptions. New material on the religiously diverse environment of Ancient Israel taking into account the latest archaeological discussions brings this book right up to date.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thoughtful, down-to-earth, contemporary guide to help partners identify and address relationship-killing behavior patterns in their own lives. Good people can be bad at relationships. One night during his divorce, after one too many vodkas and a call with a phone-in-therapist who told him to “journal his feelings,” Matthew Fray started a blog. He needed to figure out how his ex-wife went from the eighteen-year-old college freshman who adored him to the angry woman who thought he was an asshole and left him. As he pieced together the story of his marriage and its end, Matthew began to realize a hard truth: even though he was a decent guy, he was a bad husband. As he shared raw, uncomfortable, and darkly humorous first-person stories about the lessons he’d learned from his failed marriage, a peculiar thing happened. Matthew started to gain a following. In January 2016 a post he wrote—“She Divorced Me Because I left the Dishes by the Sink”—went viral and was read over four million times. Filtered through the lens of his own surprising, life-changing experience and his years counseling couples, This Is How Your Marriage Ends exposes the root problem of so many relationships that go wrong. We simply haven’t been taught any of the necessary skills, Matthew explains. In fact, it is sometimes the assumption that we are acting on good intentions that causes us to alienate our partners and foment mistrust. With the humorous, entertaining, and counterintuitive approach of The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck, and the practical insights of The 5 Love Languages, This is How Your Marriage Ends helps readers identify relationship-killing behavior patterns in their own lives, and offers solutions to break free from the cycles of dysfunction and destruction. It is must-read for every partner no matter what stage–beginning, middle, or even end—of your relationship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a thought-provoking book on the black-white academic achievement gap in Chicago’s predominantly black communities of color and what highly effective school boards can do to change it. In this book, the reader will be powerfully enlightened by a civil and human rights debate that calls for effective leadership in our schools, beginning with effective school boards. The primary agenda of effective school boards is raising student achievement performance levels and engaging the school district community to attain that goal. These instructive analyses of effective school board leadership builds on the research and wisdom of great leaders. Simultaneously, it develops a breath of fresh air for school reformers who seek to implement a new model and escape the insanity and pathology inherent in school board dysfunctions and violations of our civil and human rights which prevents progress in Chicago’s south suburban communities of color. In both highs and lows of awesome moments, as educational reform leaders and school board members, we are in a strategic leadership position to help school boards carry out their essential responsibilities for creating equity and excellence in public education. In doing so, highly effective school leaders can team with our school board leaders to lead our school district communities in preparing all students to succeed in a rapidly changing global society. School board members doing the same things over and over again and then expecting different results in academic outcomes is the definition for insanity. Education is freedom. In an era of mass educational apartheid with its consequent mass incarceration of blacks that has surpassed the enforced chattel bondage of slavery’s peak numbers in 1860, this book addresses a subject that is critically essential, timely, and in need of immediate attention for the security, success, and ultimate survival of black America. As the problems of the academic under-achievement gap is addressed in this book, it is also essential that school boards, educators, and community and national leaders accept reality, to view the problem in its true perspective, to contemplate it as it is, in providing essential solutions toward removing limiting and limited school boards’ dysfunctions, obstructions, and other barriers to academic achievement in effective school board leadership. Supporting educational excellence will thereby produce more African American scholars in mathematics, science, and in many other disciplines. This book will provide information and focus on some key action areas that successful school boards in America and around the world have focused their attention on: Vision, Standards, Assessment, Resource Alignment, Climate, Collaboration, and Continuous Academic Improvement.
