Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: German and English: Academic Usage and Academic Translation focuses on academic and popular scientific/academic usage. This book’s brief is both theoretical and practical: on the theoretical side, it aims to provide a systematic, corpus-based account of current academic usage in English and in German as well as of the translation problems associated with various academic genres; on the practical side, it seeks to equip academic translators with the skills required to produce target-language text in accordance with disciplinary conventions. The main perspective taken is that of a translator working from German into English, but the converse direction is also regularly taken into account. Most of the examples used are based on errors that occurred in real-life translation jobs. Additional practice materials and sample translations are available as eResources here: www.routledge.com/9780367619022. This book will be an important resource for professionals aspiring to translate academic texts, linguists interested in academic usage, translation scholars, and graduate and post-graduate students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative volume provides a comprehensive integrated account of the study of conceptual figures, demonstrating the ways in which figures and in particular, conflictual figures, encapsulate linguistic expression in the fullest sense and in turn, how insights gleaned from their study can contribute to the wider body of linguistic research. With a specific focus on metaphor and metonymy, the book offers a unified and systematic typology of linguistic figures, drawing on a number of different approaches, including both traditional and emerging frameworks within cognitive linguistics as well as syntactic theory, while also providing an exhaustive look at the unique features of a variety of conceptual figures, including metaphor, metonymy, oxymoron, and synecdoche. In its aim of reconciling historically opposed theoretical approaches to the study of conflictual figures while also incorporating a thorough account of its distinctive varieties, this volume will be essential reading for researchers and scholars in cognitive linguistics, theoretical linguistics, philosophy of language, and literary studies.

These linguistic gems, often spoken by marginalized communities, are at risk of fading away due to limited data and resources. The neglect of these languages not only erodes cultural diversity but also hinders effective communication, education, and social inclusion. Academics, practitioners, and policymakers grapple with the urgent need for a comprehensive solution to preserve and empower these vulnerable languages. Empowering Low-Resource Languages With NLP Solutions is a pioneering book that stands as the definitive answer to the pressing problem at hand. It tackles head-on the challenges that low-resource languages face in the realm of Natural Language Processing (NLP). Through real-world case studies, expert insights, and a comprehensive array of topics, this book equips its readers—academics, researchers, practitioners, and policymakers—with the tools, strategies, and ethical considerations needed to address the crisis facing low-resource languages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative volume proposes an overturning in the study of presuppositions. Beginning with a critical discussion of the most influential approaches, both in linguistics and philosophy, it shows that mainstream debate has not actually studied presuppositions, but rather the means to make presuppositions. In order to overcome this paradox, by relying on systematic and controllable linguistic tests, this text demonstrates that presuppositions trace a curve ranging from natural ontology to the lexicon. At the top of the curve are contents working as presuppositions for the whole human form of life and without the need of any trigger. At the bottom are contents working as presuppositions for the time of a speech act and thanks to some trigger. From this original point of view, this book revisits the classic topics of the debate and offers solid linguistic ground to the elucidation of natural ontology. This makes this volume both challenging and essential reading for researchers and scholars in pragmatics, semantics and philosophy of language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume of economic, business, financial and institutional translation increases daily. Governments strive to produce plain and accessible information. Institutions and agencies operate in more than one language. Multinationals produce documents in multiple languages to expand their services worldwide, and large businesses and SMEs also have to adopt a multilingual approach for accessing new markets in new countries. Translation and interpreting training institutions are aware of the increasing need for training in this area. This awareness is evident in their curricula, which include subjects related to these areas of activity. Trainers and researchers are increasingly interested in knowing and researching the intricacies and aspects of this type of translation. This peer-reviewed publication, resulting from ICEBFIT 2016, echoes the voices of translation practitioners, researchers, and teachers, as well as other parties gathered to discuss new issues in institutional translation and business, finance and accounting translation, as well as, in a larger sense, specialized translation.
