Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual Training Made Serviceable to the School As the whole question of Manual Training has been discussed, the objections to it considered, and its historical development traced, by Dr. Götze in his Manual, published in the early part of the present year, it will be unnecessary to repeat here what is already on record in an accessible form. The special objects of the present volume are fully set forth in the two introductory chapters. The impression would seem to prevail in some quarters that Manual Training is essentially a subject for primary schools, in which education proper is subordinated to the means of bread-winning. That, however, is not the view of its advocates, who claim that its educative qualities are such that no school can afford to ignore it. As many of the higher schools already possess workshops, it would be easy for them to make trial of the system. The expense is not greater than that involved by the common, unmethodical forms of handicraft as taught by the artisan. Perhaps the making of apparatus may commend itself to utilitarian minds by its practical value, and induce investigation of the whole matter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Development of Manual Training, in the United States It is the purpose of this thesis to trace out the development of Manual Training in the United States; to state the causes which were responsible for its introduction; to suggest the benefits derived; and to give some idea of the present trend of educational thought in regard to the subject. Much has been written in recent years about Vocational Education, Industrial Training, Technical Training, Mechanic Arts, and Trade Schools. Discussion of these forms of training does not lie within the scope of this paper, except when they are so interrelated with Manual Training that it is practically impossible to divorce them. Domestic Science is not treated under a separate heading, but is discussed in its relation to Manual Training. Much that is said concerning Manual Training is true, also, of Domestic Science. What Manual Training is to the boys, Domestic Science is to the girls. Much confusion has arisen among the uninitiated because of the different terms used, hence, it is of prime importance that the distinction between Manual Training and the other forms of training be made perfectly clear. A Manual Training course, as outlined at the present time, consists of a graded course in wood, iron, and machinists' work; systematic and continued instruction in free-hand and mechanical drawing, combined with academic studies as co-ordinated departments. It is not the purpose of Manual Training to teach trades, but rather to make the boy familiar with the use of tools. It is disciplinary in that it endeavors to train the hand for the purpose of securing at the same time the training of the mind, through the senses of touch and perception. This is done through some form of expression, either language, construction, or art. Of these, language is most commonly used. Probably con struction is next, for by means of it, man has been able to pro vide for his needs through all the ages. The expressive and active faculty is best illustrated in children in their desire to express themselves through doing. Their hands must be em ployed in some way; and as they cannot build up, they use this ceaseless activity in tearing down, their natural tendency being to destroy, to pull things apart to see how they are made. It is not hard to turn this destructive propensity into the constructive, both being forms of the same activity, if we give the children something to work with and train them sys tematically in the right use of those materials to make an article that will appeal to them through its usefulness and beauty and bring wholesome thoughts in the making. It is possible that this classification may be of value to those who come for suggestions in specific directions. To others the arrangement may appear illogical, and the repetitions unnecessary. In defence of the arrangement I must say that I have had in mind two things: first and foremost, the probable state of mind of the reader who comes to this book to learn of a matter of which he has heard much, but knows little. He wants facts, arguments, and speculations, according to the stage of his progress in finding out what manual training really is, and what it aims at. And secondly, the desirability of showing clearly the growth and progress of ideas in the development of the school. As to the occasional repetitions of statements and arguments, I will say that no one is likely to read the book through consecutively. Those who do me the honor to read it at all will read by topics and separate chapters, and being thus read I doubt if the repetitions will be found objectionable. Of necessity, much common material appears in every address. The earlier addresses were quite general in their treatment, and I have preferred to let them stand fairly complete.
