Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual Training for the Grades, College of Education This College is one of the instrumentalities of the State for the training of teachers. It offers practical and theoretical courses for the professional training of high school teachers and principals, of principals of elementary schools, of supervisors of special studies, of superintendents of school systems, and of instructors in normal schools. Its purpose is to assist the student in the acquirement of a knowledge of the branches which he wishes to teach, to give him a right attitude toward education, and to establish in him a skill in the use of efficient methods of teaching. The demand for trained teachers has increased rapidly. The College has been in existence for five years, and has graduated four classes. All its graduates were appointed to positions as soon as they were ready for them. The call for teachers in certain lines, viz., science, mathematics, and manual training, has been greater than the college could supply. It is earnestly hoped that many students may see the opportunity open in these fields and prepare for the work. The effort of the college is to bring into proper adjustment within the limits of a four-year course the academic training, the theoretical professional training, and the practical professional training necessary for a teacher. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual Training in the Public Schools of Philadelphia It is well, also, that we should be on our guard against a kind of pseudo manual training that is finding its way into the schools. As is always the case with new move ments, there is a good deal of experimenting with little knacks, which do nothing for either discipline or knowl edge. These are put forward by well-meaning persons as manual training, and great harm is done in this way in misleading the public and wasting the time and energies ofpupfls. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual Training Magazine, 1908, Vol. 9 Those schools which introduce manual training in more than the first year of high school usually introduce it in all four years. There is the greatest difference between the first and second years, because it is customary to introduce it into the first year to give it a trial, and then to extend it into the other grades of the high school. In general, the history of the introduction and extension of manual training is as fol lows: In most cases it is begun in the eighth grade and gradually ex tended over the preceding grades; where it is begun in the primary, it is introduced throughout the four grades; in the high school it is intro duced for the first time in the first year, and then gradually extended to the later years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual Training in the Public Schools In attempting this paper the writer has been constantly aware of the difficulty of his task. To lay out a scheme of manual work which will fit into the present conditions of our school system; one which will in each stage be perfectly adapted to the development of the pupil and which will, as a whole, be comprehensive and harmonious, is not yet possible. No one can elaborate such a scheme to-day; it will only be after years of experiment that the possibilities of these new methods will be developed and the different elements fitted and smoothed into place. It is difficult, in fact impossible, for one person to speak with authority on the exact relations of the various means which have been employed, for while well-adapted courses have been developed in many of the school grades, in no single instance have all these most approved and most thoroughly tested methods been united into a complete system. Nor has it been possible for any single person to come in actual working contact with all of these methods, and it is only from those in such close contact, from the workers, that a natural and harmonious system of manual training can come. This paper, consequently, is offered more in the hope that it may serve as a basis of discussion, leading to the improvement of its suggestions, than for the ultimate good it may contain. Does it not become the school master to keep step to the notes of progress Shall the demands of the age greatly change? Shall we depart wisely from the ways of our fathers in everything else, in our industries, our amusements, in the circumstances and surroundings of our homes, and make no change in the content of our school educa tion That the education afforded has in the main been judicious and fairly complete I do not call in question. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mind and Hand: Manual Training the Chief Factor in Education IN 1879 I read a paper before the Chicago Philosoph ical Society on the subject of The Inventive Genius; or, an Epitome of Human Progress. The suggestion of the subject came from Mr. Charles J. Barnes, to whom I desire in this public way to express my obligation for an introduction to a profoundly interesting study, and one which has given a new direction to all my thoughts. At the conclusion of my labors in the preparation of the paper, I realized the force of Bacon's remark, that the real and legitimate goal of the sciences is the en dowment of human life with new inventions and riches. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Argument for Manual Training No phase of the history of civilization is more in teresting than that which deals with the theory and practice of education. In the educational theory of an age we find the summation of its philosophy in the educational practice, an epitome of its activities. The school is a microcosm, and properly studied it will furnish us the clue to the proper estimation of the status of every problem that vexed a particular generation. It will not solve those problems, but it will tell us how its contemporaries tried to solve them. The reason for this is that the school is the point of contact between each generation and its successor. It is the only point at which one gene ration meets its successor systematically and with a definite purpose in view. And to the attainment of this purpose - the preparation of the rising generation to take its place in life - it brings all its best energies and all its ripest experience. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Plea for the Training of the Hand: Manual Training and the Public School I am here to make a plea for justice. The defendant in whose behalf I speak comes of an honorable ancestry, is well connected, has acknowledged rights, and has never lost an inheritance of dignity, position and power. The defendant is suffering from neglect; although responsive to good training, able to form good habits, ready to make ample returns for all outlays, the defendant has not received that education which should have been bestowed upon him as a birth-right. I am here to plead for the education of the Hand. In making this plea I do not stand alone, nor is this the only tribunal in which the claimant will be heard. Wherever teachers are in council; wherever philanthropists meet and plan for the benefit of society; wherever political economists begin to study the conditions of social prosperity; wherever the physiologists and psychologists are consulted, manual training is called for, in the Kindergarten on the one hand, and in the University on the other. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School and College, Vol. 1: Devoted to Secondary and Higher Education In very large classes, or in schools of the lower grade, only relative accuracy and thoroughness are to be attained. We can do there only what we can do. Manual training in the com mon schools is having a Splendid effect in this regard, so far as it goes. If it does not do all that its warmest advocates expect, it will impart exactness of apprehension as nothing else will. Yet, do our best, we cannot train very large classes with the desirable nicety. There is not the time to devote to each pupil. This is why private schools will for a long time be necessary to supplement public. Another revolution soon to greet the educational world, is to consist in the introduction of certain educational methods and appliances which will greatly save labor and time. It must be admitted that the average youth of eighteen in France or Germany is at least two years further advanced in quantity and quality of mental stores than his fellow of equal age here who has attended school quite as many months of his life. That this is an immense gain every one will see. It can not be ascribed to extra native brightness in the European boy, or any considerable part of it to inherited aptitude for learning. The reason Of it is that over there they teach better than we have learned to do, partly by introducing each several study at the right time, partly by securing a higher grade of teaching talent, especially for the lower Classes, and partly by more scientific modes of Opening and filling the mind, whatever the grade. We Shall never catch Up with Europe till we pay better salaries and higher honor to teachers, particularly in primary and introductory work, nor until we give more study to the science and art of teaching. When we are duly to awake to these things I do not know, but there are signs of some advance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
