Just what cooperation is or just which form of it is most adaptable to our needs in New York State does not appear to be well understood and this circular is published with the hope of making the meaning of cooperation as clear as possible and to show some practical forms which are meeting with great success. Book excerpt: THE KEY TO DISCIPLINE IS NOT PUNISHMENT, BUT MUTUAL RESPECT All parents try to do their best--but the best of intentions don't always produce the best results. Dr. Jane Nelsen, an experienced psychologist, educator, and mother, believes that children misbehave when they feel thwarted in their need to belong and in their need for love and attention. An authoritative approach, using phrases like " Because I said so!" , will only lead to rebellious behavior. Instead, parents need basic principles that bring them and their children closer. They need Positive Discipline. Dr. Nelsen explains that parents who use kindness and firmness to teach life skills will encourage self-respect, self-discipline, cooperation, good behavior, and problem-solving skills in their children. In Positive Discipline, revised and updated for the '90s, she shows all of us, parents and teachers alike, exactly how her practical program works--answering, step-by-step, such important questions as: *What works better than punishment to teach children positive, good behavior? *What mistakes do most parents make " in the name of love" ? *How can parents turn their mistakes into assets? *How can praise be dangerous? *What are the dangers of trying to be " Super Mom" ? *How can teachers avoid discipline problems in the classroom? " It is positive! It works! It saves your sanity! And it is easy to share with others." --Julie Pope, Parent Sacramento, CA " As a parent and psychotherapist, I have found enormous value and practical wisdom in Positive Discipline. It conveys a win/win atmosphere for parents and children. The techniques are so easy tolearn and fun to use...Anyone following these concepts will see almost instant results and big smiles on the faces of their children." --Katherine Dusay, Psychotherapist San Francisco, CA

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Community Programs for Cooperating Churches: A Manual of Principles and Methods This fact must be borne in mind constantly by the reader of this book. The Convention for which these chapters were prepared and by which they were revised and approved had no authority. These recommendations are authoritative only so far as they command your at tention and your service because of the common sense and Christian spirit evidenced in them. This book is not a discussion of Christian cooperation on the part of churches. It is a report on present-day cooperation, a presentation of well-tested plans. Those who prepared the reports were charged not to tell why churches should cooperate, but how they do and can co operate. The names of those who assisted in the preparation of the reports and the plan of preparation are given in the appendix on page 240. You should read these lists of names that you may know by whom this work has been done. The Commissions were composed of men and women engaged in all fields of religious service in all parts of the country in all the leading denominations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Children's Gardens for School and Home: A Manual of Cooperative Gardening Cooperative gardening is one of the newer movements for the education of the young and for the elevation of neglected and unfortunate classes; yet it has already become an important factor in the school and home life of many places under the auspices of school authorities, civic leagues, improvement associations, women's clubs, settlement houses, libraries and other bodies. This movement has two motives - the trans forming of barren, dreary, ill-kept school grounds and other uncared-for public places into bowers of beauty and good taste, and develop ing in children love of Nature, appreciation of her beauties and ability to enhance for their own enjoyment and the public good the aesthetic effect of their immediate surroundings. Today's rabbis, in addition to being spiritual leaders of their congregations, are also expected to be competent counselors to members of their community. Yet rabbis often feel inadequately prepared for the difficult challenges of their counseling role. To many, rabbinic counseling appears deceptively simple, requiring no more than good intuition, fair judgment and sincere empathy. This groundbreaking book—written specifically for community rabbis and religious counselors—reflects the wisdom of seasoned professionals, who provide clear guidelines and sensible strategies for effective rabbinic counseling.

They believe that such a course will help the parents and children to understand each other better; and that the wiser and more sympathetic government of the home which will result, will have a most wholesome and far-reaching effect upon the problems of local, State, and National Government. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual for Teachers: To Accompany a History of English Literature A few class hours of sympathetic cooperative study between teacher and class are most helpful with almost any subject and especially with At the the history of English literature, which must necessarily beginning begin with the centuries most remote from the pupil's ordinary interests. Furthermore, this introductory class-room study is most desirable with any new textbook. Was enthusiasm in a subject ever aroused by the curt injunction, Buy such and such a book, and prepare the first ten pages? Is not the teacher's aid more helpful applied at the beginning Of a book than anywhere else? Let us look the book over together in the class. What is its title? Just what does that mean? Who are the authors? What do we learn from the Table Of Contents? Is there a preface? Let us hear it read aloud. And when we come to Chapter One, let us examine not only its contents but its form, its arrangement, its divisions, its marginal headings, its summary. The class may be prepared at the outset for an intelligent use and enjoyment of the book. Don't introduce the history as a taskmaster, but rather help the class to an acquaintance with it as a companion and guide. The aims which have been set forth for the teaching Of the history of literature may be scrutinized again with their application to the history. First, it has to do with literature itself. There should be no such thing as the teaching Of the history of literature apart from teaching literature. Second, it has to do with history, not merely political history, but the history Of civilization. Third, it has to do with biography, for our interest in books can only rarely be separated from our interest in the men who wrote them. Fourth, it has to do with the present time, for the literature of the past has a Vital meaning for the youth of today.
