Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Bacteriology Having myself experienced the want of a practical aid to the study of Bacteriology by the methods introduced by Professor Koch, I thought that it might be useful to those wishing to commence this study by these recent methods, if I embodied my notes made in different laboratories in the form of a Manual for Students. The work is thus intended to help the student beginning the study of a subject, the literature of which, in English, is for the most part diffused in numerous periodicals. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Guide in Elementary Bacteriology The call for a second edition within a year seems to indicate that this Guide fills a need. The author has taken the opportunity to make changes which, he believes, will increase the usefulness of the book. The principal change has come in the new form which will certainly be found more convenient. The sequence of the exercises in Chap. I. has been somewhat changed and a few new subjects have been introduced. The order in which the various bacteria is taken up has been altered so that they are now to be studied in groups. This arrangement is in keeping with recent tendencies, and it is hoped that it will impress the student with the similarity between closely related forms, and also emphasize certain minute but important differences. The addition of a number of new cuts will tend to greater clearness. The general plan of the book remains the same. Valuable suggestions have been received from several investigators and teachers. Especial mention is due Mr. John F. Nicholson, Assistant Bacteriologist to the Wisconsin Experiment Station, for valuable assistance. Suggestion or criticisms will be gladly received. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Bacteriology A Manual of Bacteriology, therefore, which fairly represents the present state of knowledge, will consist largely of a statement of facts established by experimental data, and cannot fail to be of value to physicians and to advanced students of bacteriology as a work of reference. The present volume is an attempt to supply such a man ual, and at the same time a text-book of bacteriology for students and guide for laboratory work. That portion Of the book which is printed in large type will, it is hoped, be found to give an accurate and sufficiently extended account of the most important pathogenic bacteria, and of bacteriological technology, to serve as a text-book for medical students and others interested in this department Of science. The descriptions of non-pathogenic bacteria, and of the less important or imperfectly described species of pathogenic bacteria, are given in smaller type. For the benefit of students of medicine and others who do not care especially for the detailed descriptions Of non-pathogenic bacteria and the extensive bibliography contained in the Manual, this text-book OF bacteriology is now published. It comprises that portion of the Manual above referred to as printed in large type, revised to in clude all important additions to our knowledge of the pathogenic bacteria since the original date Of publication. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Bacteriology IN the preface to the second edition of this manual the author states that: the purpose of this book is to give in the smallest possible space the facts which a physician must know, with some of those which it is desirable that he should know, and a little of that which he may learn if his needs or inclinations lead him to go further. While n the present edition this purpose has been kept in mind by the reviser, nevertheless it has been necessary to make many alterations in order to place the work abreast of the progress which has been made since the publication of the last edition. Some things which have become obsolete have been omitted, much that is new has been added, and the scope has been somewhat widened. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Bacteriology: Clinical and Applied In what may be termed the economy of nature micro organisms are all-important; without them there would be no putrefaction, no decay, and the dead remains of animal and vegetable life would accumulate and encumber the earth, which would become barren for the want of the organic matter originally derived from it, but of which there was no return. In fact the higher plants, and indirectly, therefore, animals also, are dependent for their existence upon the presence of bacteria in the soil, which break up and render assimilable complex substances used as manures. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course of Elementary Practical Bacteriology: Including Bacteriological Analysis and Chemistry Bacteriology is an essential branch of Pathology, of such importance that it is gradually becoming a necessary, if not a compulsory, element in the study of Medicine. As a matter of fact, most Faculties and Universities granting a Diploma or Degree in Public Health demand three months practical instruction in Bacteriology. It is only by patient laboratory work that Bacteriology can be taught in such a manner as to serve any useful purpose. One of the chief difficulties in the practical instruction which has presented itself to us has been the want of a suitable handbook for the laboratory. The student has felt this want as much as his teachers. He cannot be expected to dig the necessary information out of large and voluminous text-books, which, moreover, are often deficient in all practical details. At St. Bartholomew's Hospital we have been in the habit of giving out slips with full directions about the work to be done from day to day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Bacteriology and Pathology for Nurses For ages the leper had been considered unclean, and Since the dawn of the world of man had plague infested cities been shunned, and, later, those who were afflicted and their habitations were purified by baths and smudges and noxious fumes. Then an Observing Dutchman of an inventive turn, Leeuwenhoek, of Delft, about the year 1680 produced a lens of such power that this enemy Of man could be seen, though it was not recognized as such at that time. Though Leeuwenhoek certainly discovered the existence Of bacteria and described them, neither he nor any one else succeeded in connecting them with disease for nearly two centuries. So for two hundred years, though its presence was known and its guilt Ofttimes suspected, the disease germ remained unconvicted. Oliver Wendell Holmes, an American physician author, in 1843 suspected the cause Of puerperal fever and wrote on -its contagiousness. In reply to the criticism and invectives which were heaped upon him because he ventured SO new and astonishing an idea in medicine he wrote: It is as a lesson rather than a reproach that I call up the memory Of these irreparable errors and wrongs.
