Some have been partially, and many, such as the Nervous System and its Development, have been entirely rewritten. It has still been considered advisable to retain the old anatomical nomenclature until such time as a standard nomenclature has been fixed and generally accepted. The Appendix, however, containing a large number of the terms of the Basle nomenclature, has been retained for those who wish to refer to them. The subject of Embryology is still partially dealt with by appending to the description of each organ a concise account of its development. Over and above this an entirely new and complete chapter, dealing with General Embryology, has been added, with the view of elucidating many points in the various concise developments. This chapter has been specially and skilfully illustrated. The author has to acknowledge with deep gratitude the valuable assistance which he has so willingly received from his demonstrator, Dr. Peter Thomson, M.A., B.Sc., in preparing this edition for the press. He has also to thank the publishers for the great labour which they have kindly undertaken in various directions, and for the great care which they have bestowed upon the publication of this edition. Hughes, the author of this work, died in the service of his country, still young, and widely regretted. It was he mainly who, in the early spring months of 1900, when the medical resources of our army in the field were taxed to the uttermost, turned the tide of his countrymen's enthusiasm into that most beneficent proof of patriotism - the Welsh Hospital for South Africa. On June 15, the disastrous epidemic of typhoid being then at its height, news of a grave crisis in the affairs of the Welsh Hospital, owing to deaths and sickness among the staff, reached the Executive Committee at home; Professor Hughes at once volunteered, and in twenty-four hours was on his way to South Africa. In his charge the Hospital performed services at Springfontein and Pretoria which received the commendations of the Commander-in-Chief, Lord Roberts, and the Principal Medical Officer of the Army. On October 19, having accomplished his mission, he returned to England, stricken with typhoid contracted while on duty, and died on November 3, 1900, aged 39.
