Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the following pages an effort is made to give fresh treatment to the history of the Negro people in the United States, and to present this from a distinct point of view, the social. It is now forty years since George W. Williams completed his History of the Negro Race in America, and while there have been many brilliant studies of periods or episodes since that important work appeared, no one book has again attempted to treat the subject comprehensively, and meanwhile the race has passed through some of its most critical years in America. The more outstanding political phases of the subject, especially in the period before the Civil War, have been frequently considered; and in any account of the Negro people themselves the emphasis has almost always been upon political and military features. Williams emphasizes this point of view, and his study of legal aspects is not likely soon to be superseded. A noteworthy point about the history of the Negro, however, is that laws on the statute-books have not necessarily been regarded, public opinion and sentiment almost always insisting on being considered. It is necessary accordingly to study the actual life of the Negro people in itself and in connection with that of the nation, and something like this the present work endeavors to do. It thus becomes not only a Social History of the race, but also the first formal effort toward a History of the Negro Problem in America.

Book excerpt: This book, written by a dean of Morehouse College, provides a brief history of negroes in America beginning with the first incidences of slavery in the American colonies and ending with an analysis of the state of the American negro in the early 20th century. The stories of several important negro leaders are given, and the politics of slavery, emancipation, and reconstruction efforts in the south are discussed. Benjamin Griffith Brawley (April 22, 1882 - February 1, 1939) was a prominent African-American author and educator. Several of his books were considered standard college texts, including The Negro in Literature and Art in the United States (1918) and New Survey of English Literature (1925). Born in 1882 in Columbia, South Carolina, Brawley was the second son of Edward McKnight Brawley and Margaret Dickerson Brawley. He studied at Atlanta Baptist College (renamed Morehouse College), graduating in 1901, earned his second BA in 1906 from the University of Chicago, and received his master's degree from Harvard University in 1908. Brawley taught in the English departments at Atlanta Baptist College, Howard University, and Shaw University. He served as the first Dean of Morehouse College from 1912 to 1920 before returning to Howard University in 1937 where he served as chair of the English department. He wrote a good deal of poetry, but is best known for his prose work including: History of Morehouse College (1917); The Negro Literature and Art (1918); A Short History of the American Negro (1919); A Short History of the English Drama (1921); A Social History of the American Negro (1921); A New Survey of English Literature (1925).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the American Negro It is perhaps only when one enters upon such a study as this that he realizes how valuable are the investiga tions of Dr. W. E. B. Dubois in this field. For the earlier years the thesis, The Suppression of the African slave-trade, is really indispensable; and one of the chapters is largely based on the Atlanta Univer sity publication, The Negro Church. In a similar way is another chapter based upon the valuable study by Dr. R. R. Wright, In, entitled self-help in Negro Education. The last chapter is naturally much indebted to my own publication, The Negro in Literature and Art. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Negro: His Past and Future After the preliminary meeting of the Tri-State Medical Society at Virginia Beach, Dr. P.I!. Barringer, of the University of Virginia, was requested by the acting secretary to prepare for the organization meeting of this Society to be held at Charlotte, X.C, a short talk on the raison d'etre for a new medical society in the South. In this address Dr. Barringer took the position that if this was to be conducted as other societies, there was no need for a new society, as there were sixieties in abundance already in existence which devoted themselves to the general needs of the profession, and that if another society was organized it. should be based upon new lines. He suggested that the entire first lav of each meeting of this new society should be devoted to some subject of broad general interest to the profession, such as the negro problem now facing the South, race mortality, inebriety, etc. This suggestion was well received and the negro problem was chosen as the subject for discussion at the next meeting at Charleston, S. C, and Dr. Barringer appointed leader of debate with the request that, he bring in a paper on the influence of heredity upon the negro. Many papers on the negro were read at this Charleston meeting and the subject freely discussed. By the unanimous vote of the Society it was ordered that the papers of Dr. P.B. Barringer and Dr.S. C.Baker should be printed and sent to all the medical societies in the South with the recommendation that they seriously consider the facts therein set forth. Paulus A. Irving, Secretary Tri-State Medical Society. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
