Instead of speculating, this volume offers rich empirical evidence about actual developments in online newsrooms. The authors use ethnographic methodologies to provide a vivid, close analysis of processes like newsroom integration, the transition of newspaper and radio journalists to digital multimedia production, the management of user-generated content, the coverage of electoral campaigns, the pressure of marketing logics, the relationship with bloggers or the redefinition of news genres. -- Publisher description.

It is free to read at Oxford Scholarship Online and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations. Detailed analyses of poverty and wellbeing in developing countries, based on household surveys, have been ongoing for more than three decades. The large majority of developing countries now regularly conduct a variety of household surveys, and the information base in developing countries with respect to poverty and wellbeing has improved dramatically. Nevertheless, appropriate measurement of poverty remains complex and controversial. This is particularly true in developing countries where (i) the stakes with respect to poverty reduction are high; (ii) the determinants of living standards are often volatile; and (iii) related information bases, while much improved, are often characterized by significant non-sample error. It also remains, to a surprisingly high degree, an activity undertaken by technical assistance personnel and consultants based in developed countries. This book seeks to enhance the transparency, replicability, and comparability of existing practice. In so doing, it also aims to significantly lower the barriers to entry to the conduct of rigorous poverty measurement and increase the participation of analysts from developing countries in their own poverty assessments. The book focuses on two domains: the measurement of absolute consumption poverty and a first order dominance approach to multidimensional welfare analysis. In each domain, it provides a series of flexible computer codes designed to facilitate analysis by allowing the analyst to start from a flexible and known base. The book volume covers the theoretical grounding for the code streams provided, a chapter on 'estimation in practice', a series of 11 case studies where the code streams are operationalized, as well as a synthesis, an extension to inequality, and a look forward.

The chapters look at specific approaches that have been researched and developed and that have almost reached the standardization stage, such as intracellular mechanisms, particularly phosphoprotein-enriched astrocytes and transthyretin proteins; CXCR4; autophagy-inhibiting drugs; spatiotemporal genetic analysis; tyrosine kinase inhibitors; and more. Also considered are advances in diagnostic systems like intra vital microscopy and molecular imaging.

Book excerpt: The utterly absorbing real story of the lives of the Pilgrims, whose desires and foibles may be more recognizable to us than they first appear. Americans have been schooled to believe that their forefathers, the Pilgrims, were somber, dark-clad, pure-of-heart figures who conceived their country on the foundation of piety, hard work, and the desire to live simply and honestly. But the truth is far from the portrait painted by decades of historians. They wore brightly colored clothing, often drank heavily, believed in witches, had premarital sex and adulterous affairs, and committed petty and serious crimes against their neighbors in surprisingly high numbers. Beginning by debunking the numerous myths that surround the landing of the Mayflower and the first Thanksgiving, James Deetz and Patricia Scott Deetz lead us through court transcripts, wills, probate listings, and rare firsthand accounts, as well as archaeological finds, to reveal the true story of life in colonial America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews and defines the current state of the art for informatics education in medicine and health care. This field has undergone considerable change as the field of informatics itself has evolved. Twenty years ago almost the only individuals involved in health care who had even heard the term “informatics” were those who identified themselves as medical or nursing informaticians. Today, we have a variety of subfields of informatics including not just medical and nursing informatics, but informatics applied to specific health professions (such as dental or pharmacy informatics), as well as biomedical informatics, bioinformatics and public health informatics. The book addresses the broad range of informatics education programs available today. The Editor and experienced internationally recognized informatics educators who have contributed to this work have made the tacit knowledge explicit and shared some of the lessons they have learned. This book therefore represents the key reference for all involved in the informatics education whether they be trainers or trainees.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you've dreamed of a way to safely and quickly lose weight while still eating foods you love, then this book by bestselling weight loss authors Jennifer Jolan and Rich Bryda could be exactly what you're looking for.The 1-Day Diet is changing the diet and weight loss world. Based on hard science, it works without constantly dieting for days, weeks, and months at a time... without planning special meals...without counting calories... and without needing to exercise. The idea behind this diet was first discovered by professional athletes (who wanted to lose body fat without starving or feeling tired) and then perfected for women by a world-class diet expert. In fact, it's not unusual to lose 2-5 pounds the first day and up to 30 pounds the first month without fat returning. The Best Part? You're only allowed to do the diet 1-3 days per week. The rest of the week you can eat all your favorite foods (even "bad" foods) as long as you follow a few simple guidelines. Some of the secrets in this fascinating book include:The science behind why it's almost impossible to fail here. (Even if everything else hasn't worked.) - How to diet 1 day a week to KEEP fat off forever. (No yo-yo effect or worrying about fat creeping back on.) - A simple 5-minute exercise that can double your weight loss speed on the 1-Day Diet. (Exercise is NOT required-but you can lose weight TWICE as fast by doing this simple exercise that takes only 5 minutes per day.) - How to use the 1-Day Diet Plan to cut your food bill almost in half. - How to prevent fat gain even while pigging out on holidays and weekends. - How the 1-Day Diet naturally eliminates cravings and thinking about food. - A spice that lowers blood sugar levels, makes you more insulin sensitive (that's really good thing), and helps you lose weight. - The 1-hour "window" to eat as bad as you want without gaining fat. (If you really want to indulge, eat your bad meals at this exact time to carbs turn into energy instead of fat.) - Why the 1-Day Diet is NECESSARY for pre-diabetic people... or who have full-blown diabetes. (Millions of people are pre-diabetic and don't even know it.) - Why typical dieting and exercise are often no match for CRAZY, out-of-control hormones... and how to fix your hormones so weight loss follows. - The culprit found in processed foods at a rate of 1,000,000 times higher than estrogen found in women's breasts! A disaster for weight loss. - How our foods became so nutritionally empty that it now takes 26 of this fruit to equal the nutrition of 1 of them from 1914! - You know second-hand smoke is bad for you, right? Well, this common food is like the equivalent of second-hand smoke. Bad news... and you're eating it without even knowing it. - Women hold fat because they have 1,000 TIMES the concentration of these versus men (a big reason why women usually have a harder time losing weight). - This cheap substance has 84 different minerals... the version you probably get has only 2.
