Book excerpt: Big Boys' Toys takes a look at the wonderful world of consumer items that are available for their amusement value and general awesomeness. It will appeal to the discerning male who has a lot of disposable income and wants to fill that aching, gaping hole that was born in a deprived childhood and that can only be filled with lots and lots of stuff to play with. More realistically it is aimed at all men who dream! Big Boys' Toys assumes that you've got a lot of money burning a hole in your pocket but you need ideas on how to spend it. It's full of lists of great stuff, their descriptions, specifications and who and where to get it from. It's not so much a catalogue, but a compendium of ideas of what you could spend your money on - a sort of kick-starter for the imagination. It includes prices to give ball park figures of how deep you're going to have to dip into those offshore accounts in tax havens to be able to acquire these objects of desire! From practical things that you can actually use to utterly indulgent but eminently collectible items, there should be enough here to satisfy all tastes.

Download or read book Lifestyle TV written by Laurie Ouellette and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-01-29 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From HGTV and the Food Network to Keeping Up With the Kardashians, television is preoccupied with the pursuit and exhibition of lifestyle. Lifestyle TV analyzes a burgeoning array of lifestyle formats on network and cable channels, from how-to and advice programs to hybrid reality entertainment built around the cultivation of the self as project, the ethics of everyday life, the mediation of style and taste, the regulation of health and the body, and the performance of identity and "difference." Ouellette situates these formats historically, arguing that the lifestyling of television ultimately signals more than the television industry's turn to cost-cutting formats, niche markets, and specialized demographics. Rather, Ouellette argues that the surge of reality programming devoted to the achievement and display of lifestyle practices and choices must also be situated within broader socio-historical changes in capitalist democracies.

Book Synopsis Ancient Divination and Experience by : Lindsay Gayle Driediger-Murphy
Download or read book Ancient Divination and Experience written by Lindsay Gayle Driediger-Murphy and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence. It is free to read at Oxford Scholarship Online and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations. This volume sets out to re-examine what ancient people - primarily those in ancient Greek and Roman communities, but also Mesopotamian and Chinese cultures - thought they were doing through divination, and what this can tell us about the religions and cultures in which divination was practised. The chapters, authored by a range of established experts and upcoming early-career scholars, engage with four shared questions: What kinds of gods do ancient forms of divination presuppose? What beliefs, anxieties, and hopes did divination seek to address? What were the limits of human 'control' of divination? What kinds of human-divine relationships did divination create/sustain? The volume as a whole seeks to move beyond functionalist approaches to divination in order to identify and elucidate previously understudied aspects of ancient divinatory experience and practice. Special attention is paid to the experiences of non-elites, the perception of divine presence, the ways in which divinatory techniques could surprise their users by yielding unexpected or unwanted results, the difficulties of interpretation with which divinatory experts were thought to contend, and the possibility that divination could not just ease, but also exacerbate, anxiety in practitioners and consultants.

Book Synopsis Living Crafts, Historic Tools by : Michael Emery
Download or read book Living Crafts, Historic Tools written by Michael Emery and published by Schiffer Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What we celebrate today as "crafts" were once the means of everyday manufacture. The craftsman's product was not quaint, archaic, or merely decorative—it was essential. The tools that created these necessities speak to the early American spirit of ingenuity. Simple but resourceful, each tool was a beautiful, clever marriage of form and function, endowed with a life of its own, uniquely forged and perfectly suited for its purpose. The Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum, the leading public attraction devoted to Pennsylvania German (Pennsylvania Dutch) culture, works to preserve and carry the art of handcrafts into the modern age by educating and delighting visitors with their vast collection and craftwork demonstrators often in authentic dress, using period tools. With this book, the museum celebrates the hand tool as a medium of expression and salutes those who wield it with skillful pride. Through hundreds of images of these elegantly purposeful hand tools, the history of American handcraft is traced—sure to delight the luddite at heart.
