Book excerpt: MANSON INTERVIEWS RAW! MY CHARLES MANSON PRISON INTERVIEWS & PSYCHOLOGICAL DIAGNOSIS by Dr. Paul Dawson presents the traumatizing, astonishing admissions and scandalous interview comments of the psychopathic serial killer, Charles Manson. This new edition is well researched, cross-validated from various sources, and accurate as possible. Extensive photos. He was the wild-eyed, scraggly-haired Dark Prince of the 1960s. Manson was the demon-hippie, psycho-serial-killer-by-proxy of the Woodstock era who sent his "family" of fanatical, cult-crazed robots out to commit multiple homicides in the mansions of Los Angeles. Charles Manson, an alarming, terrifying paradox, was one of the most dangerous serial killers in the American history of crime. Dr. Dawson brings a clinical psychologist's perspective to the Manson interviews which he completed in 1988 and are now available for the first time after 25 years. Dr. Dawson conducted a series of interviews with Charles Manson, poster boy for killer-cult leaders, in September 1988 while he was incarcerated in San Quentin State Prison, San Quentin, California. Dr. Dawson provides a very rare, sensational and spellbinding investigation and assessment inside the treacherous, enigmatic mind of this infamous icon of criminal evil. Manson's depraved aura, the repulsion of this homicidal cult guru, and his murdering cult-kingpin rampage is investigated in depth. Dr. Dawson reveals Manson's darkest secrets, elicits Manson "family" confessions, confronts and provokes the murderer by probing his mind, and challenging Manson's spooky justifications. Manson, an enigma, finally answers questions about his cryptic crimes he's suppressed for many years. Psychological concepts are introduced to illuminate persuasive, lucid light on Manson's ghastly crimes of assault, torture and mass murder. Dr. Dawson earned a Ph.D. in psychology from The New School for Social Research, Graduate Faculty, New York City. Dr. Dawson has been chief psychologist of a state prison system, clinical psychologist in mental hospitals, clinics and in private practice. Dr. Dawson has written over 30 books including: ANGELINA JOLIE PSYCHOANALYZED; BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER; BPD RECOVERY; CAMILLE LAURENT & HADES; CAMILLE LAURENT & LUISON; CAMILLE LAURENT & XIBALBA; CAMPUS KILLER'S SECRET OBSESSION; FACES OF TED BUNDY; GRACE KELLY IN PSYCHOTHERAPY; GRACE KELLY SESSIONS; HOW TO GET SOBER; JACKIE O SESSIONS; JACKIE ONASSIS IN THERAPY; JACKIE ONASSIS PSYCHOANALYZED; JODI ARIAS; JOHNNY DEPP DIAGNOSED; MANSON INTERVIEWS RAW; MARILYN MONROE DIAGNOSED; MASKS OF A LADY KILLER; MASKS of PREDATORS; MASKS of SEX PREDATORS; MY PRINCESS DIANA THERAPY SESSIONS; MY TED BUNDY INTERVIEWS RAW!; NARCOTERRORIST PSYCHOPATHS; PRINCESS DIANA DIAGNOSED; PSYCHOLOGY of MEN WHO ABUSE WOMEN; PSYCHOPATHS; ROCK STARS DIAGNOSED; SEX CRIMES; SEX, LOVE & SMART DATING; SPIES & ASSASSINS; SPIRITUAL THERAPY; THE MASKS OF KARLA HOMOLKA.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a new epilogue updated from its hardcover edition titled Creepy Crawling: Charles Manson and the Many Lives of America's Most Infamous Family "Creepy crawling" was the Manson Family's practice of secretly entering someone's home, and without harming anyone, leaving only a trace of evidence that they had been there, some reminder that the sanctity of the private home had been breached. Now, author Jeffrey Melnick reveals just how much the Family creepy crawled their way through Los Angeles in the sixties and then on through American social, political, and cultural life for fifty years, firmly lodging themselves in our minds. Even now, it is almost impossible to discuss the sixties, teenage runaways, sexuality, drugs, music, California, or even the concept of family without referencing Manson and his "girls." Not just another Charles Manson history, Charles Manson's Creepy Crawl: The Many Lives of America's Most Infamous Family explores how the Family weren't so much outsiders as emblematic of the Los Angeles counterculture freak scene, and how Manson worked to connect himself to the mainstream of the time. Ever since they spent two nights killing seven residents of Los Angeles—what we now know as the "Tate-LaBianca murders"—the Manson family has rarely slipped from the American radar for long. From Emma Cline's The Girls to the TV show Aquarius, as well as two major films in 2019, including Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the family continues to find an audience. What is it about Charles Manson and his family that captivates us still? Author Jeffrey Melnick sets out to answer this question in this fascinating and compulsively readable cultural history of the Family and their influence from 1969 to the present.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ripped, torn and cut offers a collection of original essays exploring the motivations behind – and the politics within – the multitude of fanzines that emerged in the wake of British punk from 1976. Sniffin’ Glue (1976–77), Mark Perry’s iconic punk fanzine, was but the first of many, paving the way for hundreds of home-made magazines to be cut and pasted in bedrooms across the UK. From these, glimpses into provincial cultures, teenage style wars and formative political ideas may be gleaned. An alternative history, away from the often-condescending glare of London’s media and music industry, can be formulated, drawn from such titles as Ripped & Torn, Brass Lip, City Fun, Vague, Kill Your Pet Puppy, Toxic Grafity, Hungry Beat and Hard as Nails. The first book of its kind, this collection reveals the contested nature of punk’s cultural politics by turning the pages of a vibrant underground press.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ’Counterculture’ emerged as a term in the late 1960s and has been re-deployed in more recent decades in relation to other forms of cultural and socio-political phenomena. This volume provides an essential new academic scrutiny of the concept of ’counterculture’ and a critical examination of the period and its heritage. Recent developments in sociological theory complicate and problematise theories developed in the 1960s, with digital technology, for example, providing an impetus for new understandings of counterculture. Music played a significant part in the way that the counterculture authored space in relation to articulations of community by providing a shared sense of collective identity. Not least, the heady mixture of genres provided a socio-cultural-political backdrop for distinctive musical practices and innovations which, in relation to counterculture ideology, provided a rich experiential setting in which different groups defined their relationship both to the local and international dimensions of the movement, so providing a sense of locality, community and collective identity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1867, an American merchant ship, the Rover, sank off the coast of southern Taiwan. Fourteen sailors reached the shore, where almost all were killed by indigenous people. In retaliation, the United States launched two disastrous military operations against local tribes. Eventually, the U.S. consul to Amoy, Charles Le Gendre, negotiated a treaty with Tauketok, the chief of the eighteen tribes of the area, that secured safe passage for shipwrecked sailors. Yao-Chang Chen’s historical novel Puppet Flower retells the story of the Rover incident, bringing to light its pivotal role in Taiwanese history. Merging documented events and literary imagination, the novel vividly depicts Tauketok, Le Gendre, and other historical figures alongside the story of Butterfly, a young woman of mixed ethnic heritage who serves as an interpreter and mediator during the crisis. Chen deftly reconstructs the multiethnic and multilingual society of southern Taiwan in the second half of the nineteenth century from multiple perspectives, portraying local people’s daily struggles for survival and their interactions with Han Chinese settlers, Qing dynasty bureaucrats, and Western officials, tradesmen, and adventurers. The novel explores nineteenth-century Sino-American and Sino-indigenous relations and emphasizes the centrality of Taiwanese indigenous cultures to the island’s history. A gripping work of historical fiction, Puppet Flower is a powerful revisionist narrative of a formative moment in Taiwan’s past. It was recently adapted into a popular Taiwanese TV miniseries, Seqalu: Formosa 1867.
