Book excerpt: In the long-awaited follow-up to her groundbreaking, million-copy bestseller The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands, Dr. Laura now focuses on how men and women need to understand and appreciate the uniqueness of masculinity and femininity; what the best ways to relate, caretake, and nurture each other are; and how to bring a marriage back from the brink of disaster. Dr. Laura asserts that in order to produce and sustain a wonderfully satisfying marriage, spouses must recognize and appreciate the polarity between the masculine and the feminine. Both husband and wife have power in the relationship, and each needs to realize this in order to ensure personal satisfaction. Using real-life examples from her call-in radio show, and giving real-life solutions, Dr. Laura focuses on the typical mistakes made by men and women in their relationships and shows how marriages can not only survive but thrive.

Book excerpt: In order to come to your senses, Alan Watts often said, you sometimes need to go out of your mind. Out of Your Mind brings readers, for the first time, six of this legendary thinker's most engaging teachings on how to break through the limits of the rational mind. Offering answers to generations of spiritual seekers, Alan Watts is the voice for all who search for an understanding of their identity and role in the world. For those both new and familiar with Watts, this book invites us to delve into his favourite pathways out of the trap of conventional awareness: discover art of the "controlled accident" - what happens when you stop taking your life so seriously and start enjoying it with complete sincerity. Embrace chaos to discover your deepest purpose. How do we come to believe "the myth of myself" - that we are skin-encapsulated egos separate from the world around us-and how to transcend that illusion? Find the miracle that occurs when we stop taking life so seriously.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the varying perspectives of theological thought the contrasting ideas of transcendence and immanence must inevitably be looked at together. To whatever extent they are held to be mutually compatible or mutually exclusive, neither can be considered without at least some cognizance being taken of the other. Nevertheless, in the swinging of the pendulum from era to era, first one and then the other theme receives the greater weight of attention. Thus, nineteenth-century liberalism placed more emphasis on immanence, whereas the twentieth-century revolt against liberalism has concentrated on transcendence. In this book the author studies the transcendent aspect of God as developed by five contemporary theologians. Two of the men whose work Dr. Farley examines, Reinhold Niebuhr and Paul Tillich, are thoroughly familiar. The other three, Karl Heim, Charles Hartshorne, and Henry Nelson Wieman, have received less attention in recent studies. The five represent widely divergent traditions, but all of them agree in opposing immanentism. Moreover, they all deal with the tension between the philosophical and the Biblical affirmations of God's transcendence, and attempt to show, in their respective ways, how these types of "beyondness" are related.

Book excerpt: There was a time when everyone knew what a real man was… now, with changing times, values and roles, many men struggle with what it means to be a “real man” in the 21st Century. What does a real man look like? How does he act? What are his values and morals? What role does a real man play in society? The 12 commitments that Chris and Larry share cover the gamut of life, from family, including your spouse and children, work, health, finances, service, and friendships. This little book is thought-provoking. It will both challenge you as well as encourage you. Most importantly, it will cause you to think about what kind of man you are and what kind of man you can become.

Book excerpt: Henry Nelson Wieman's (1884-1975) most distinctive philosophical contributions are his identification of creative interchange as the ultimate process in human experience through which people and their institutions are able to create, sustain, improve, and correct their value perspectives and, equally important, his description of creative interchange in psychological, sociological, historical, religious, and institutional contexts as subject inquiry and the experimental test of consequences. This massive collection, thirty-three original essays with an appendix and index, represents the first formal attempt to consider fully the interdisciplinary implications of creative interchange. Following an introduction, the book is structured into six sections, beginning with historical studies on the development of Wieman's philosophy of creativity. With this information as a base the subsequent five sections treat: (1)his metaphysics and theory of knowledge; (2)his theory of value; (3)creative interchange in the context of rhetoric and literary criticism; (4)creative interchange as a guide for social philosophy; and (5) creative interchange as related to current philosophic trends. The essayists include prominent philosophers, such as Charles Hartshorne, Lewis E.Hahn, and S. Morris Eames, as well as emerging scholars who have responded to Wieman's conception of creative interchange.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a facsimile edition of a 1946 work of the American pragmatic theologian Henry Nelson Wieman (1884-1975). For Wieman, science and technology represent great power for good and evil, and they must be directed toward the service of that force which creates, sustains, and fulfills human life. But as long as this force is portrayed in supernaturalist terms, as the God who is wholly transcendent of the world, its actual operation in human life is beyond the reach of inquiry. For science to serve the source of good, that source must be understood as open to rational-empirical examination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are men afraid to commit? Dr Weinberg answers this question in WHY MEN WON'T COMMIT and shows women how to help their men change their minds. Dr Weinberg considers that men have four basic needs (the need to be special, to travel light, for loyalty and for emotional closeness) and if they feel that these aren't being met they will develop bad gut reactions against their girlfriends, which will most likely mystify these women. The problem for women and men is that men themselves couldn't tell you about these needs because they've grown up establishing a 'masculine pretence' that forbids them from showing emotion or discussing problems. Dr Weinberg's WHY MEN WON'T COMMIT provides a bridge between the two sexes that will lead to greater understanding, greater commitment and greater happiness. This is a unique approach to an age-old problem because it shows women why they needn't play games, or lose their own dignity, to help men commit. An informed, practical, straight-talking guide to men, or as Dr Weinberg calls them 'the fragile sex', WHY MEN WON'T COMMIT is invaluable to every woman who feels her single life must end - and soon!
