Malgady and published by Bentham Science Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Without a thorough understanding of culture and its nuances on part of the mental health service providers, alienation, stigma, and culturally based impediments rule. While concerns for diversity have been raised on numerous occasions, with increasing frequency over the past four decades, little progress has been made in implementing such concerns in clinical practice. Over two-thirds of Americans receive treatment for depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and related disorders. Comorbidity is rarely diagnosed. These trends are greatly exacerbated among members of ethnic, cultural, and linguistic minority groups. the authors contributing to this volume share their clinical acumen and experiences, rooted in their evidence-based research. Their purpose is to bring issues attending assessment and treatment of ethnic minority clientele closer to the fore. Some of the leading authors on the topic, in psychology and social work, present their well earned clinical and research experiences in this volume. Case studies are presented which are instructive and intriguing, bringing together the richness of a multidisciplinary approach to the topic.
Book Synopsis Mental Health of Ethnic Minorities by : Felicisima C. Serafica
Download or read book Mental Health of Ethnic Minorities written by Felicisima C. Serafica and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1990-12-07 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a conference held at Ohio State University, this volume focuses on the unique mental health needs of ethnic minorities. Four sections cover psychopathology; advances in assessment; advances in treatment; the current state of knowledge including university, professional, and government roles. Each section presents an introduction to its theme as well as three papers. The papers individually relate the section theme to three ethnic groups: Black, Hispanic, and Asian Americans. Distinguished by its developmental as well as clinical orientation, this graduate level textbook is also an excellent reference for professionals in the fields of mental health, social work, education, and medicine. The field of Minority Mental Health promises to produce research which will promote the welfare of ethnic minorities and contribute to the understanding of nonminorities. Toward this goal, the editors and contributors of Mental Health of Ethnic Minorities review the current state of knowledge as it relates to mental health problems, assessment, and treatment. They suggest new directions for research. They also provide a vehicle to disseminate research findings to the service provider, professional training programs, and the graduate student.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spirituality and culture are both recognized as important elements for providing culturally competent mental health services to ethnically and religiously diverse populations. They rarely, however, are considered together within a common conceptual framework. In this chapter, relationships between religiousness, spirituality, acculturation, and theological understandings of inculturation (e.g., how religious/spiritual beliefs and practices cannot be understood apart from their cultural context) are explored. Empirical evidence regarding the influence of religion and spirituality on mental health, as well as the effectiveness of spiritually and culturally accommodative approaches to treatment is also examined. Finally, the impact of spirituality and culture on mental health interventions is considered within two different paradigms: (a) how psychotherapy may be adapted to be more culturally sensitive to diverse populations, and (b) how indigenous notions of well-being, illness, and healing may help mental health providers broaden their notions of interventions.
