Book excerpt: Mpreg Romance Omega Con Fletcher is a manny who has trouble keeping his opinions to himself. That character trait doesn’t always make him popular with his clients, but he always has the best interest of the children at heart. When he’s sent to alpha Rex Bronan’s home to care for his four-year-old son, Con immediately spots a loving father who has trouble showing that love. Most people would probably keep their mouths shut so they could keep their job. But Con doesn’t always do things the way other people would. Rex has raised his son alone for three years. His wife dumped him a year after his son was born because he was such a workaholic. He knows he isn’t the best father in the world, but he didn’t really think he was the worst either. Not until that mouthy omega Con started pointing out all his flaws. Rex has always been with women, and he hasn’t really noticed another guy sexually since college. Even then he’d never acted on anything with a guy. Finding Con attractive is confusing for Rex, but the biggest issue he has with this newfound attraction to his manny is the fact that he’s twenty years older than Con.

With unprecedented access, Jean Rhodes and Shawn Boburg have uncovered fascinating stories and family photos spanning Manny's early years to the present. Book excerpt: Candid and illuminating, this text exposes the educational realities of Latinos (U.S. and foreign-born) in K–12 public schools in the Western United States from the students’ own perspectives. Through the testimonies of students who struggled to graduate from high school, issues that are often oversimplified and commonly misunderstood are brought to life. The students themselves offer pragmatic solutions to reduce the unchanging academic gap among culturally diverse groups. Their accounts are then compared with the viewpoints of a range of K–12 teachers on matters of community, learning, race, culture, and school politics. Examining in depth the question of how to best educate a growing culturally and linguistically diverse student population, this critical case study provides food for thought and provokes reflection on the critical role that human interactions and networking play in attaining one’s dreams and human aspirations. Changes in the Second Edition Updated demographics; New chapter: The Role of the Media in the Transmission of Ideologies Related to Latino Students; Updated conclusions and study implications.

Book excerpt: The death of Paco "Packy" Johnson shouldn't have surprised anyone. Paco Johnson spent a lifetime in the system -- starting in juvie at age 10, then prison for most of his adult life. But he managed to make some real friends in prison, friends who helped him get parole, a place to stay, and plans to help him adjust to a life outside prison after seventeen years behind bars. But only seventeen hours after he was released, he was found dead -- murdered -- in the streets of the Bronx. James Beck can't save Packy any longer -- but he can try to find out what happened to Packy, and why, and exact a measure of justice. Beck, ringleader of a tight clique of ex-cons based in Brooklyn's Red Hook section, is determined to accord Packy at least some dignity and a measure of justice. But what drove Packy out onto the streets of the Bronx his first night back? Who did he run into that hated him enough to viciously beat him before executing him, and yet left behind his wallet full of cash? But what at first appears to be a simple, if tragic, street killing, quickly becomes something much more difficult and complex. And it will take all the skills, connections, and cunning of Beck and his team not only to learn the truth but to survive the forces they've unwittingly unleashed.

Book excerpt: In the small town of Atlas, Alabama, four people collide emotionally and physically; one dies a sudden and brutal death. Michelle has been living in her own hell because she believed too easily, too quickly, in the words of the man of her dreams, Johnny Blauser. Her first year of college life led her into love and, carelessly, pregnancy, only to be abandoned by a man she had believed loved her like she loved him. Too steeped in religion to consider abortion, her solution was adoption, and to fool her mother with an elaborate lie about where she was and what she was doing while she waited for her baby to be born. With the best intentions, she delivered her baby into the hands of an evil father who eventually smothered the infant. She took an apartment in the same complex as the couple that had adopted her child, to somehow watch over her baby, whom she could not, after all, save.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wilson Greatbatch, an electrical engineer in Buffalo, NY, had a brilliant idea and the technical know-how to turn his idea into a practical device, for which millions of people today are grateful. This is the story of the first pacemaker by the man who invented it. Intrigued by electronics from the time he was a boy, Greatbatch earned a degree in electrical engineering from Cornell University. It was during his time at Cornell that he first became interested in the medical applications of electronic devices. He learned about the problem of heart blocking at Cornell and knew it was fixable in principle, but at the time the vacuum-tube technology was impractical for medical use. By the 1950s he was teaching at the University of Buffalo School of Electrical Engineering and the first silicon transistors had just been invented. While using one of the new $90 transistors on another project Greatbatch discovered by accident, as he describes it, the proper design for a blocking oscillator that he immediately knew would work as a pacemaker. He soon interested Dr. William Chardack, chief of surgery at the Veteran''s Administration Hospital in Buffalo, in the project, and by 1958 they were conducting animal experiments. Greatbatch quit his job and for the next two years devoted full-time in his wood-heated barn workshop to building one pacemaker after another. During this time he built fifty pacemakers, forty of which went into animal experiments. By 1960 he and a team of surgeons and engineers had gained enough knowledge from the trial and error of the animal experiments to feel ready to begin implanting the remaining ten devices in people. The first trials went well and Greatbatch''s device extended the lives of many of these seriously ill patients by decades. What followed were years of hard work refining the battery and electrode technology, marketing the pacemaker to an initially skeptical medical community, and keeping the company that manufactured the device profitable. Reminiscent of Edison''s many dogged attempts to find the right solution in pursuit of an ingenious idea, The Making of the Pacemaker is a human-interest story at its best and also an important firsthand account for the medical archives of an invention that today saves millions of lives.
