Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decade, work on cool-water carbonates has expanded to become a mainstream research area. Studies on modern and Quaternary deposits will continue to be important; however, there is increasing momentum towards unravelling sediment processes, biota-sediment interactions and diagenetic products in Cenozoic and older cool-water carbonates. Many contributions in this book document Cenozoic and Quaternary carbonates from landlocked (microtidal) water-bodies. These carbonates display important differences in biota and fabric distributions when compared with world ocean examples. Consequently, the scientific community is now better placed to reinterpret pre-Tertiary carbonates where there is a suspicion that they have developed under microtidal conditions. Some papers in the book provide new approaches to interpreting environmental change within macrotidal regimes and others lay firm foundations for future cool-water carbonate diagenetic research. The aim of the book is to illustrate recent international contributions to cool-water carbonates research, with an emphasis on Neogene and Recent case studies. Contributions are divided into three sections: microtidal carbonates from the Mediterranean realm; macrotidal examples from New Zealand, Australia and Mexico; and early diagenetic fabrics.

Book excerpt: The EIS has been produced by the proponent - Tallwood Pty Ltd - to explain the proposal, and addresses issues surrounding the potential environmental, social and economic impacts of the proposed marina development. The proposal seeks to develop a multi-use recreational/commercial marina immediately south of Mannum. The proposal seeks to create more than 550 residential allotments (including 160 with waterfrontage) and 156 houseboat mooring sites, many of which could be used for permanent residential houseboats. The proposed development also includes a commercial centre with a tavern, retail outlets, interpretive centre and tourist facilities. All residential and commercial allotments are proposed to be constructed above the 1956 flood level. A constructed wetland would be established to improve the quality of water leaving the marina and residential waterways before it re-enters the river, and would form a buffer between the river and the marina and provide wildlife habitat. The proposal also includes a new wastewater treatment plant, which would enable the removal of the existing wastewater treatment ponds from the floodplain. Wastewater would be used to irrigate the adjoining golf course.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noah’s Flood is one of the Bible’s most popular stories, and flood myths survive in many cultures today. This book presents the first comprehensive examination of the incorporation of the Flood myth into the Anglo-Saxon imagination. Focusing on literary representations, it contributes to our understanding of how Christian Anglo-Saxons perceived their place in the cosmos. For them, history unfolded between the primeval Deluge and a future – perhaps imminent – flood of fire, which would destroy the world. This study reveals both an imaginative diversity and shared interpretations of the Flood myth. Anglo-Saxons saw the Flood as a climactic event in God’s ongoing war with his more rebellious creatures, but they also perceived the mystery of redemption through baptism. Anlezark studies a range of texts against their historical background, and discusses shifting emphases in the way the Flood was interpreted for diverse audiences. The book concludes with a discussion of Beowulf, relating the epic poem’s presentation of the Flood myth to that of other Anglo-Saxon texts.

Book excerpt: Wastewater and drinking water treatment are essential elements of urban infrastructure. In the course of the last century there has been enormous technical development, so successful that for the general public in industrialized countries this infrastructure is hardly noticed. Nevertheless there is ongoing activity to further improve the existing processes. The IWA Leading Edge Technology conference held in Prague helped to stimulate this development and this book helps disseminate the results. A selection of presentations from the conference are included in this volume. Wastewater and drinking-water treatment are normally considered as two separate fields due to the very different boundary conditions that apply. Nevertheless several issues such as membrane processes, removal of micropollutants and water reuse are of crucial importance to both. This potential for cross-fertilization further enhances the value of this collection of high-quality articles that delineate the leading edge of research and development in water and wastewater treatment.

Book excerpt: Prepared by the Water Supply Engineering Technical Committee of the Infrastructure Council of the Environmental and Water Resources Institute of ASCE. This report examines the application of artificial neural network (ANN) technology to water supply engineering problems. Although ANN has rarely been used in in this area, those who have done so report findings that were beyond the capability of traditional statistical and mathematical modeling tools. This report describes the availability of diverse applications, along with the basics of neural network modeling, and summarizes the experiences of groups of researchers around the world who successfully demonstrated significant benefits from using ANN technology in water supply engineering. Topics include: Forecasting salinity levels in River Murray, South Australia; Predicting gastroenteritis rates and waterborne outbreaks; Modeling pH levels in a eutrophic Middle Loire River, France; and ANNs as function approximation tools replacing rigorous mathematical simulation models for analyzing water distribution networks.

Book excerpt: Water is an increasingly critical issue at the forefront of global policy change, management and planning. There are growing concerns about water as a renewable resource, its availability for a wide range of users, aquatic ecosystem health, and global issues relating to climate change, water security, water trading and water ethics. This handbook provides the most comprehensive reference ever published on water resource issues. It brings together multiple disciplines to understand and help resolve problems of water quality and scarcity from a global perspective. Its case studies and 'foundation' chapters will be greatly valued by students, researchers and professionals involved in water resources, hydrology, governance and public policy, law, economics, geography and environmental studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CONNECTING LIVES AND LEARNING is a project dedicated to connecting learning to student lives, connecting teachers with the latest middle years research, and better connecting primary and secondary schools to keep students at school longer. Based in Adelaide's lower socio-economic northern urban fringe, the project helps teachers use students' everyday experience and expertise to develop new ways of teaching and learning that involve students in intellectually challenging tasks. This book tells the stories of real teachers, in real classrooms, making real attempts for change, and not always succeeding. It is a book about teachers making a difference in difficult times and tough places. But most importantly, this book reaffirms that being an educator is inherently about adopting socially just practices, building community capacity and contributing to a more socially sustainable world.
