Durch gewaltige Veranderungen zwischen den Geschlechtern erscheint der junge Mann dahingehend betroffen zu sein, dass Prozesse der Indentitatssuche und Individualisierung problematischer geworden sind und Gewalthandlungen speziell als Resultat erscheinen konnen. Diese Arbeit zielt darauf ab, tiefer in die Materie von Gewalthandlungen im Kontext von Geschlecht, Mannlichkeit und Adoleszenz einzutauchen. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf homosozialen Gewalthandlungen im Jugendalter.

Jungen sind in unserer Gesellschaft unvereinbaren gesellschaftlichen Erwartungen und widersprüchlichen Verhaltensmaßregeln ausgesetzt. Unter diesen Vorraussetzungen ein stabiles Selbstwertgefühl und ein positives Selbstbild zu entwickeln ist nicht leicht. Ein Aspekt der mich besonders interessiert, ist der Zusammenhang von Gewalt und männlicher Sozialisation, männlicher Identität, widersprüchlichen Verhaltensmaßregeln und Bildern von Männlichkeit, mit denen sich Jugendliche und Erwachsene auseinander setzen und die sich mit der Zeit stark gewandelt haben. Ein weiterer interessanter Aspekt ist die Jungenarbeit, die männliche Gewalt reduzieren und männliche Konflikte thematisieren soll. Aus meinen Interessen und Überlegungen an und zu diesem Thema ergeben sich zwei zentrale Fragestellungen für die folgende Arbeit: 1.) Wie hat sich das Verständnis des Begriffs „Männlichkeit“ gewandelt und welche Zusammenhänge gibt es zwischen Männlichkeit und Gewalt? 2.) In wie fern unterstützt die Jungenarbeit die Jungen in ihrer Entwicklung und wie beugt sie männlicher Gewalt und ihren Ursachen vor?

It was conceived as a direct response to policy-related and media-generated concerns about male teacher shortage and offers a critique of the call for more male role models in elementary schools to address important issues regarding gender, race and the politics of representation. By including the perspectives of minority teachers and students, and by drawing on feminist, queer and anti-racist frameworks, this book rejects the familiar tendency to resort to role modelling as a basis for explaining or addressing boys’ disaffection with schooling. Indeed, the authors argue, on the basis of their research in urban schools in Canada and Australia, that educational policy concerned with male teacher shortage and the plight of disadvantaged minority boys would benefit from engaging with analytic perspectives and empirical literature that takes readers beyond hegemonic discourses of role modelling. A compelling case is presented for the need to disarticulate discourses about role modelling from a politics of representation that is committed to addressing the reality of the impact of racial and structural inequalities on both minority teachers and students’ participation in the education system. The book also provides insight into the persistence of gender inequality as it relates to the status of elementary school teaching as women’s work.

Book excerpt: A groundbreaking investigation into why so many Islamic radicals are engineers The violent actions of a few extremists can alter the course of history, yet there persists a yawning gap between the potential impact of these individuals and what we understand about them. In Engineers of Jihad, Diego Gambetta and Steffen Hertog uncover two unexpected facts, which they imaginatively leverage to narrow that gap: they find that a disproportionate share of Islamist radicals come from an engineering background, and that Islamist and right-wing extremism have more in common than either does with left-wing extremism, in which engineers are absent while social scientists and humanities students are prominent. Searching for an explanation, they tackle four general questions about extremism: Under which socioeconomic conditions do people join extremist groups? Does the profile of extremists reflect how they self-select into extremism or how groups recruit them? Does ideology matter in sorting who joins which group? Lastly, is there a mindset susceptible to certain types of extremism? Using rigorous methods and several new datasets, they explain the link between educational discipline and type of radicalism by looking at two key factors: the social mobility (or lack thereof) for engineers in the Muslim world, and a particular mindset seeking order and hierarchy that is found more frequently among engineers. Engineers' presence in some extremist groups and not others, the authors argue, is a proxy for individual traits that may account for the much larger question of selective recruitment to radical activism. Opening up markedly new perspectives on the motivations of political violence, Engineers of Jihad yields unexpected answers about the nature and emergence of extremism.

Book excerpt: Anthropologists have written a great deal about the coastal adaptations and seafaring traditions of Pacific Islanders, but have had much less to say about the significance of rivers for Pacific island culture, livelihood and identity. The authors of this collection seek to fill that gap in the ethnographic record by drawing attention to the deep historical attachments of island communities to rivers, and the ways in which those attachments are changing in response to various forms of economic development and social change. In addition to making a unique contribution to Pacific island ethnography, the authors of this volume speak to a global set of issues of immense importance to a world in which water scarcity, conflict, pollution and the degradation of riparian environments afflict growing numbers of people. Several authors take a political ecology approach to their topic, but the emphasis here is less on hydro-politics than on the cultural meaning of rivers to the communities we describe. How has the cultural significance of rivers shifted as a result of colonisation, development and nation-building? How do people whose identities are fundamentally rooted in their relationship to a particular river renegotiate that relationship when the river is dammed to generate hydro-power or polluted by mining activities? How do blockages in the flow of rivers and underground springs interrupt the intergenerational transmission of local ecological knowledge and hence the ability of local communities to construct collective identities rooted in a sense of place?
