Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manners of the Ancient Israelites: Containing an Account of Their Peculiar Customs and Ceremonies, Their Laws, Polity, Religion, Sects, Arts and Trades, Divisions of Time, Wars, Captivities, &C., With a Short Account of the Ancient and Modern Samaritans Every attempt to illustrate the Bible, the oldest and most important book in the world, a book that has God for its Author and the eternal happiness of the human race for its end, deserves the most serious attention of all those who profess the Christian religion. It is granted on all hands, that this book has many difficulties; but this is not peculiar to the Jewish scriptures; all ancient writings are full of them: and these difficulties are generally in proportion to the antiquity of such writings; for the customs, manners, and language of mankind are continually changing; and were it not for the help received from the records of succeeding ages, which are only accessible to the learned, many valuable works of primitive times must have remained in impenetrable obscurity. Book Synopsis Our Common Manners and Customs as Hebrew Peoples by : Nkem Emeghara
Download or read book Our Common Manners and Customs as Hebrew Peoples written by Nkem Emeghara and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2018-05-23 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Ola Udah (literal meaning: Judahs offering or Judahs ornament) Equiano (possibly ekwe alu a) was right when he identified his Eboe people as presenting same manners and customs as the Israelites of the old times as illustrated in the book of Leviticus. This study attempts to be an evidence to this assertion. It is a product of a research that began since 1983 and is barely concluded in 2018. The reader would readily realize that the research on this topic has only begun. Changes, modifications, and even eliminations of manners and customs of people through the generations make continuation of this study inevitable. This would be especially expected when examining ancient cultural issues today. Although the study did not strictly begin as another attempt to prove the identity of the Ibos as the Jews enunciated in the Old Testament designation of the children of Jacob, it has however added a relevant credence to that fact. Some of the manners and customs examined include similarities in the use of words and meanings, ritual practices, beliefs, personal attributes, and aspirations that are common to the Eboe (Heeboe, Ibu, Ibo, Igbo) peoples and the ancient Israelites. The book is basically a call for individual and collective reinvention of Eboes (and indeed worldwide Jews) for collective survival in a hostile world. The book interprets a true present-day Hebrew as the true worshipper of the I am that I amthe G-d of our fathers who singled out Abraham and Jacob, our common ancestral fathers, and chose them for a mission to the world. The book finally suggests a version of Christianity centered on YeshuaJesus the Christand his message in the New Testament, a version of Christianity that would include relevant aspects of our omenala (law) among other recommendations. This is a book no one should ignore as it should be an eye-opener to the facts relevant to finding the solution to a long-standing identity crisis of the Eboe people.
Book Synopsis Religion & Culture in Ancient Israel by : John Andrew Dearman
Download or read book Religion & Culture in Ancient Israel written by John Andrew Dearman and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion in ancient Israel didn't develop in a vacuum; it was influenced by the Near Eastern culture around it as much as it in turn influenced that culture. Dearman explores that dynamic interplay in this thought-provoking study. Using archaeological and literary evidence (both biblical and extrabiblical) he shows how distinctive Old Testament traditions (such as the paradoxical role of the prophets) flourished in the interaction of Israelite religion with cultural and political forces, while other traditions languished.Religion and Culture in Ancient Israel by J. Andrew Dearman is the comprehensive study of religious forms and customs that has been needed by the discipline for many years. . . . Dearman's work is a mixture of traditional and social scientific examinations of the world of ancient Israel and its social matrix. From its opening use of Clifford Geertz' definition of 'religion, ' a tone is set, but not one that 'over interprets' the available sources. There is no parallelomania here, no exaggeration of archaeological data, no theological agenda, and no attempt to rehash Albright or Gottwald. Instead, Dearman provides a fresh approach, geared to both a historical and a literary examination of religious forms and phenomena in ancient Israel. . . . The goal of any textbook is to provide (1) information in a systematic manner and (2) to hold the interest of the reader so that the author's message gets across to his or her audience. Dearman has succeeded well with both of these. Victor Matthews, Professor of Religious Studies, Southwest Missouri State University
