Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of how people struggled to define, reform, and overturn racial etiquette as a social guide for Southern Rhodesian politics. Underlying what appears to be a static history of racial etiquette is a dynamic narrative of anxieties over racial, gender, and generational status. From the outlawing of "insolence" toward officials to a last-ditch "courtesy campaign" in the early 1960s, white elites believed that their nimble use of racial etiquette would contain Africans' desire for social and political change. In turn, Africans mobilized around stories of racial humiliation. Allison Shutt's research provides a microhistory of the changing discourse about manners and respectability in Southern Rhodesia that by the 1950s had become central to fiercely contested political positions and nationalist tactics. Intense debates among Africans and whites alike over the deployment of courtesy and rudeness reveal the social-emotional tensions that contributed to political mobilization on the part of nationalists and the narrowing of options for the course of white politics. Drawing on public records, legal documents, and firsthand accounts, this first book-length history of manners in twentieth-century colonial Africa provides a compelling new model for understanding politics and culture through the prism of etiquette. Allison K. Shutt is professor of history at Hendrix College.

Book excerpt: As a follow up to the extremely successful Town & Country's Social Graces comes this new collection of essays by some of our most celebrated writers, exploring the need for manners in today's hectic world. Such keen observers as David Brown, Hugh Downs, Frank McCourt, and Peggy Noonan offer their witty and incisive views on how to avoid offending others. Town & Country magazine has been synonymous with good taste and refinement for more than a century. So who better to comment on the need for manners in a time of constant cell phone chatter, non-step competition, hair-trigger-tempers, and fast-paced lifestyles? Both humorous and insightful, this sparkling collection of essays reflects on the pressing need for kindness, consideration, and civilized behavior. And the list of contributors is stellar: David Brown makes a persuasive plea for civility; Jamie Lee Curtis talks about "Having Dinner with the Family"; Sonya Friedman reflects on motherhood; Charles Osgood comments on everyday courtesies; and Ted Sorenson discusses "Patriotic Pride." With topics that range from the art of listening to good elevator etiquette, these eloquent pieces offer advice worth following.

They are the pillars of nation; the future of our country. But now-a-days, we see that our students have gone strayed. We should guide them in a way they must turn to be good citizens. Hence, I thought of writing a book on etiquette and manners. In the book, right from the beginning to the end, tips on general etiquette and manners have been given. They are useful for all sections of society, viz. students, teachers, masters, servants, employees, guests, hosts, etc. Etiquette on lunch is mentioned. Manners of meeting and parting are enumerated. Our students and the youth must have common knowledge of etiquette and manners at least to this limit. This book is meant for the students of India. Its motto is to impart learning of general etiquette and manners to the students and the youth. Students and the youth are requested to go through all chapters one by one. Just read and repeat. Read them several times until all the tips are internalized. Just practice the manners and emulate them all. This will help you be so good and do some great. CONTENTS Comments of the NCERT 1. Book excerpt: In Mr. Manners: Lessons from Obama on Civility, author and etiquette maven Anna Post demonstrates that President Obama is more than our political leader--he's also a worthy role model when it comes to good manners. His intelligence and good looks notwithstanding, there's no doubt President Obama's courteousness played a significant role in his swift and historic rise to the highest office in the land. In Mr. Manners, Post breaks down the president's manners, from the slightest kind gesture to the grandest of considerate deeds, and shows how we can apply such thoughtfulness in our own daily lives. With photography capturing President Obama committing everyday acts of civility and complemented by Post's fun yet authoritative commentary, Mr. Manners graciously reinforces the case that Emily Post and her descendants have been making for decades: courtesy is in our nation's best interest.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manners and Customs of the Principal Nations of the Globe Let us look a moment at the influence of climate. In a cold country, like that of New England, the ia clemency of the season, for six months in the year, compels the inhabitants, during the other six, to make provision for this period, by industry, frugality and providence. Necessity thus becomes the parent of these qualities: and it maybe Observed that while the habits of the people are thus drawn into the paths of virtue, the physical system is braced, the intellectual faculties stimulated, and the moral qualities elevated and ennobled. Book excerpt: Frances Trollope’s Domestic Manners of the Americans, complemented by Auguste Hervieu’s satiric illustrations, took the transatlantic world by storm in 1832. An unusual combination of realism, visual satire, and novelistic detail, Domestic Manners recounts Trollope’s three years as an Englishwoman living in America. Trollope makes the civility of an entire nation the subject of her keen scrutiny, a strategy that would earn her, in the words of the critic Michael Sadleir, “more anger and applause than almost any writer of her day.” Auguste Hervieu’s twenty-four original illustrations, placed and scaled as in the first edition, are included in this Broadview Edition, inviting readers to experience the original relationship of image and text.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Success in Society: A Manual of Good Manners, Social Etiquette, Rules The great purpose Of the rules of etiquette is to inculcate good manners, and thereby render people mutually agreeable. It is, therefore, especially incumbent upon all Americans to know and Obey them. We are all forced, in spite of individual Objections and protests, to put into practice the national theory of equality. We must mix together, and it therefore behooves us, for our own comfort, to make the mixture as smooth and agree able as possible. In no nation in the world are general good manners so indispensable as in this democratic country. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
