Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Himalayas are a source of inspiration and challenge to the researchers, intellectuals and adventurers. The lofty mountains with snow-clad peaks and lush green forests fascinate one and all. This work on the art and culture of people of the Himalayan region is fourth in sequence by the author. After Folk Art of Duggar; Ripples in the Himalayas; and Rajat Shikhron Ke Rupehle Swar, this work completes the first phase of studies of Himalayan culture. Earlier Kumaon, Garhwal, Kashmir and Ladakh Himalayas and their ranges were covered in detail. With the inclusion of Dhauladhar ranges and nearby surroundings of Kangra, Palampur, Baijnath, Mandi, Kullu, Manali, Lahaul & Spiti, Kinnaur and upper regions of Shimla in this book, it completes the studies of western Himalayas. The author has visited himself in most of these areas and collected the data so that first hand information can be provided to the readers. In a way it is a first endeavour in this field wherein the people and the land are discussed collectively for the first time. However, individual tribes of Himachal Pradesh do find their place in sociological studies done in the field, but we do not find a comparative study for which an objective effort has been made in this book for the benefit of readers and art historians alike. The book covers the art, architecture and cultural aspects of Himachal Pradesh. References have also been made to Basohli, Jammu, Manket, etc. as the Pahari art of minature paintings had its own legacy in these erstwhile kingdoms." -- Cover description.

Book excerpt: This report on Future Trends in Inflammation IV records another of the multidisciplinary meetings organized by the European Biological Research Association. The organizers wish to record their thanks to all the participants and delegates who made this such an enjoyable meeting. Our thanks are due to a number of members of the pharmaceutical industry who so kindly donated funds. These funds were used to provide grants for young research workers to attend this meeting. Many people have kindly given their time and help to make this congress possible. It is impossible to list them by name, but we are profoundly grateful. We were dubious at the outset as to whether to hold this meeting in a period when many other meetings are being organized on inflammation. The enthusiastic attendance proves that we were right in going ahead. The next international meeting will be held in France in 1983. For further details please contact: Professor J. P. These stories have their characters from villages of India, depicts the suffering of animals, birds, trees, and environment. Dr. Pawan Kumar is a young emerging writer of India, who has published many stories and essays in renowned magazines of India and abroad. He has given multiple talks and conducted many radio programs on his work. He already has published four books about his stories, essays, and novels. Mankind has made irreversible dents on Mother Nature and has gone astray in fulfilling obligations and responsibilities toward her. The trees are being cut down, natural water reservoirs are being destroyed, and environment has become polluted, bringing the global warming at its climax. Many species are endangered now. Elephant tusks, animal skins, their skeletons and teeth are being smuggled through human network across the globe. Killings of animals are on the rise. These innocent animals who are voiceless suffer immensely by these inhumane and barbarian acts to fulfill mankinds food or monitory gains. These animals have the same emotions, feelings, and sentiments as human beings have. They love their family, and they mourn in their loss of their near or dear ones as we do. The irony is these animals cant go to the courts to seek justice. These stories remind us that we cant escape from our wrong doings toward Mother Nature as we cant escape from the court of the Almighty.

Book excerpt: “Utterly irresistible…The Gold Eaters is truly the gold standard to which all fiction — historical and otherwise — should aspire.” — Buzzfeed A sweeping, epic historical novel of exploration and invasion, of conquest and resistance, and of an enduring love that must overcome the destruction of one empire by another. Kidnapped at sea by conquistadors seeking the golden land of Peru, a young Inca boy named Waman is the everyman thrown into extraordinary circumstances. Forced to become Francisco Pizarro's translator, he finds himself caught up in one of history's great clashes of civilzations, the Spanish invasion of the Incan Empire of the 1530s. To survive, he must not only learn political gamesmanship but also discover who he truly is, and in what country and culture he belongs. Only then can he be reunited with the love of his life and begin the search for his shattered family, journeying through a land and a time vividly depicted here. Based closely on real historical events, The Gold Eaters draws on Ronald Wright’s imaginative skill as a novelist and his deep knowledge of South America to bring alive an epic struggle that laid the foundations of the modern world.

It emphasizes the local and historic divergence of these processes and illustrates how Germans and Africans were able to produce exclusive power arenas but also engaged in a reciprocal extraversion of the respective power of the other. Stefanie Michels teaches at the University of Cologne, Germany.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are inevitable by-products of aerobic cells. A delicate balance between ROS production and antioxidant defences is essential to assure cell function. This requirement is also true for the spermatozoon, the male gamete, with the unique goal of carrying and delivering the paternal genome into the oocyte. Oxidative stress promotes damage in lipids, proteins and DNA of spermatozoa, and this oxidative damage is associated with infertility. The ROS-dependent damage could occur at different stages of the production and maturation of the sperm. On the other hand, low and controlled levels of ROS are necessary to trigger and regulate sperm function. When ejaculated, spermatozoa are incapable of fertilizing the egg. They must reside in the oviduct of the female genital tract to undergo a yet to be understood the biochemical process called capacitation. Once capacitated, the spermatozoon undergoes the exocytotic event called acrosome reaction and fertilize the oocyte. ROS regulate the different molecular mechanisms such as sperm motility, capacitation and acrosome reaction to assure fertilization. This Special Issue includes original research and reviews of literature concerning the role of reactive oxygen species in male reproduction, particularly the role of antioxidants in the regulation of male fertility as well as basic and clinical studies using antioxidant-based strategies for the treatment of male infertility.
