Book Synopsis Not an Easy Journey by : Walter B. Shurden
Download or read book Not an Easy Journey written by Walter B. Shurden and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shurden on Baptists: Assessments, Appreciations, Apologies contains articles, essays, and speeches given by Walter Shurden on Baptists. Walter Shurden is a longtime champion of the role of freedom in the Baptist tradition. Recognizing that freedom alone does not tell the whole story, Shurden also speaks to and from other cardinal Baptist convictions. Some of the materials in this volume appear for the first time and consist of speeches and addresses that Shurden has made at crucial points in recent Baptist life in America in the latter part of the twentieth century. Especially concerned with the fundamentalist takeover of the Southern Baptist Convention and the resulting lack of emphasis on historic Baptist principles, Shurden addresses directly and indirectly the SBC controversy in several of the chapters of this book. More, Shurden emphasizes what makes Baptists distinctive in American religious life.

Book excerpt: Manifestos have historically been used as the foundation of major political movements or revolutions. They have defined the basis for governments, political movements, dogma, constitutions, religion and defined the principles for which human-kind strives to achieve (for better or worse). One of the most notable of manifestos is the "Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen" as written through the collaboration of Thomas Jefferson with French General Lafayette.A manifesto is a published verbal declaration of the intentions, motives, or views of the issuer, be it an individual, group, political party or government. A manifesto usually accepts a previously published opinion or public consensus or promotes a new idea with prescriptive notions for carrying out changes the author believes should be made. It is often political or artistic in nature, but may present an individual's life stance. Manifestos relating to religious belief are generally referred to as creeds.

Book Synopsis Fixing the Indemnity by : Iain D. Campbell
Download or read book Fixing the Indemnity written by Iain D. Campbell and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-09-01 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir George Adam Smith (1856-1942) was one of the leading Old Testament scholars in the late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century Scottish church. As Free Church minister of QueenÕs Cross, Aberdeen (1882Ð92), Professor of Old Testament Language and Literature at the Free Church College, Glasgow (1892Ð1910), and Principal of Aberdeen University (1910Ð1935) he popularized modern criticism of the Old Testament. He was determined to show how such an approach to the Bible was compatible with evangelical faith, a position that never sat easily with the confessional position of the Scottish church, and the story of SmithÕs life is an investigation into the relationship between biblical scholarship and evangelical faith. In this new biography, Campbell has made extensive use of primary material, including Smith's letters and journals, to fill a gap in the literature on events within the Scottish church in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. This critical biography will be of use both to students of Scottish church history and students of Old Testament criticism, as well as raising issues that are of continuing importance for all who believe in confessional Christianity as well as in scholarly study of the biblical text.
