Book excerpt: Challenging established views and assumptions about traditions and practices of filmmaking in the African diaspora, this three-volume set offers readers a researched critique on black film. Volume Three of this landmark series on African cinema spans the past century and is devoted to the documentation of decoloniality in cultural policy in both Africa and the Black diaspora worldwide. A compendium of formal resolutions, declarations, manifestos, and programmatic statements, it chronologically maps the long history and trajectories of cultural policy in Africa and the Black Atlantic. Beginning with the 1920 declaration of the Rights of the Negro Peoples of the World, which anticipates cinema as we know it today, and the formal oppositional assertions—aspirational and practical. The first part of this work references formal statements that pertain directly to cultural policy and cinematic formations in Africa, while the next part addresses the Black diaspora. Each entry is chronologically ordered to account for when the statement was created, followed by where and in what context it was enunciated.

How can we build a shared historical knowledge with schools, communities, and education professionals? The book responds to these questions by suggesting the public history approach, as applied in education and, more generally, to all professions that are based on human relations. The public history of education refers directly to North American experiences, but at the same time it is part of a process of European cultural acceptance and re-elaboration that has one of its main points of reference in the Italian Public History Association. The objective is not to make history for the general public, but to make public history with all those interested, in a collaborative and participative context, in the quest for meaningful knowledge, directly related to the current and challenging needs of our society.

In reality, very few feature films during the Fascist period can be labeled as propaganda. Re-viewing Fascism considers the many films that failed as "weapons" in creating cultural consensus and instead came to reflect the complexities and contradictions of Fascist culture. The volume also examines the connection between cinema of the Fascist period and neorealism—ties that many scholars previously had denied in an attempt to view Fascism as an unfortunate deviation in Italian history. The postwar directors Luchino Visconti, Roberto Rossellini, and Vittorio de Sica all had important roots in the Fascist era, as did the Venice Film Festival. While government censorship loomed over Italian filmmaking, it did not prevent frank depictions of sexuality and representations of men and women that challenged official gender policies. Re-viewing Fascism brings together scholars from different cultural and disciplinary backgrounds as it offers an engaging and innovative look into Italian cinema, Fascist culture, and society.

Book excerpt: This book aims to deepen the discussion about the goals envisioned, the roles undertaken and constraints found in higher education institutions both in Europe and Latin America in current times. This book addresses the controversies and challenges regarding globalising ideologies, policies, and practices at place. It questions leading concepts, epistemological axioms and sweeping transnational policies which are shaking core principles, traditional routines and local commitments of European and Latin American higher education institutions. It focuses on the motivations and consequences of transnational networking in academic life, on the impacts of the Bologna process, both its vision and implementation in higher education in Europe and its exportation to Latin America. This book also examines the defi nitions, translations and implications of concepts such as equality and difference, equity and solidarity, governance and citizenship and their signifi cance in organizational, geographical and global contexts of contemporary higher education both in Europe and Latin America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As indicated in the title, the axis around which the content of this work revolves are the relations between education and democracy. If it is reasonable to suppose that democracy is not taught through undemocratic practices, it must not be inferred that the democratization of internal relations within the school is a sufficient condition for preparing young people for active participation in the democratization of society. It is not simply a matter of choosing between authoritarian or democratic relations within the classroom, but rather of articulating the work developed in schools with the process of democratization of society. The pedagogical practice contributes in a specific way, that is to say, pedagogically, to the democratization of society insofar as one understands how the question of democracy is posed with regard to the proper nature of pedagogical work, which, in turn, implies a real inequality (at the point of departure) and a possible equality (at the point of arrival).

Book excerpt: Based on 5 years of empirical research conducted in 24 countries from every region of the world, this book examines the content and dynamics of adult learning policies and strategies, including the measures to promote the expression of learning demand and the new role of the state and other institutions. After presenting a reconstructed and expanded view of current adult learning in the various regions of the world in Chapter 1, Chapters 2 and 3 identify several trends in the process of developing and implementing policy and outlines the subject and functions of adult learning policy today. Chapters 4 and 5 deal with the changing socioeconomic and cultural dynamics that are reflected, sometimes explicitly, sometimes contradictorily, in today's adult learning policies. Chapters 6 and 7 cover the expression and management of learning demand and policies to promote the expression and synergy of learning demand. Chapter 8 is on learning continuities and discontinuities. Chapter 9 examines changes in the role of the state and other institutions and the rise of new organizational models of adult learning. Chapter 10 takes a closer look at the impact of these epistemological and policy changes by presenting and analyzing the basic trends in the field of adult basic education. The conclusion sums up the discussion and raises questions about possible future orientations. Three appendixes include adult learning policy frameworks, tables about policy documents by country, and a list of participating researchers. Four bibliographies list 122 policy documents, 20 country studies, 32 other policy documents, and 246 monographs and articles. (KC)
