The financial crisis ravaging the global economy is naturally a serious cause for concern to policy makers. Secondary data were used in this study, the data were collected from CBN statistical bulletin also data were also gathered from journals and textbook that are related to the research topic. The overall significance of the regression is tested using Fisher's statistics. In this study the calculated F* value of 47.375 is significant at 5%. The result however show that linear relationship exist between the dependent and the independent variables of the model. The evidence established that the independent explanatory variables have individual and combine impact on the market capitalization in Nigeria. There is significant relationship between global financial crisis and capital market in Nigeria. Some of the recommendations made in this study are that. There is an urgent need for the total overhaul of regulations and regulatory framework, in order to enhance both the on-site and off-site examination and supervision of the banks. There is the need for increased and enhanced provisions for consumer protection. Nigerian economy is a mono-economy; any crash on the price of oil internationally will cripple our economy. So it is a matter of urgency for the Nigerian economy to divest into agriculture, manufacturing, information technology etc. Political stability is an important factor that encourages investment in an economy. So our nascent democracy should be nurtured.

The risk of global recession has heightened significantly and volatility of commodity prices, which is the mainstay of most developing countries like Nigeria, has increased further. If this situation continues to deteriorate, developing countries could be in great jeopardy. This study examined the influence of the Global Financial Crisis on Nigerian economy. It was discovered that the financial crisis will cause fall in commodity prices, decline in export, lower portfolio and FDI inflow, fall in equity market, decline in remittance from abroad etc. It was recommended that the federal government should come up with intervention policies that will minimize these effects and jump start the economy and that business operator should learn to do things using resources at their disposal to develop and expand at manageable level to stem the tide of the crisis.

Book excerpt: The financial crisis that caused severe cash crunch in several western economies did not spare countries of lesser economic prowess as it had its remote implication for the Nigerian banking sector which plays a significant role in the economy. This study assessed the impact of the global financial crisis on the Nigerian banking sector with a focus on the 10 troubled banks, 8 of which hold 35.6% of the industry's asset. Secondary data gotten from annual reports and financial statements of ten banks were used. It was discovered that the abuse of various banking processes which should usually be strictly observed before loans are granted where ignored, thus exposing Nigerian banks to financial crisis and the alarming level of non-performing loan in most of the banks was also a significant factor that led to the problems of the troubled banks. The paper recommends that the level of risk management policies in Nigerian banking sector should be regularly reviewed and improved upon, special audit of banks should be done more often and more commitment should be shown by regulatory agencies (i.e. Central Bank of Nigeria and Nigerian Deposit Insurance Company) in the monitoring and supervision of banks.

The current global financial crisis is triggered by events in the United States, and rapidly engulfing the entire globe. Nigerian financial market being one of the emerging global markets have over the last four years witnessed some significant level of progress and stability in the form of recapitalization and consolidation of its financial institutions. These reforms though commendable, yet could not shield the banks and the entire economy from the global financial crisis. This study identifies the trends and implications of the global financial crisis on the Nigerian economy.Methodology/Technique - Descriptive analysis through secondary sources of data employed. A stratified sampling method adopted to select between the two strata that are the strongest and the weakest in terms of capital based. Four organizations were chosen from each stratum making eight banks and the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) as the sample size of the study.Findings - This study identifies the trends and implications of the global financial crisis on the Nigerian economy. It was observed that Nigerian banks are open to global practices and business relationships with foreign banks that are badly affected by the crisis. While investors lose confidence in the Nigerian markets as stocks and oil fall drastically almost daily. This has almost resulted in drastic cut in the foreign capital inflow for the country.Novelty - Based on the above findings the study recommends that Nigerian government should diversify the economy by improving the state of infrastructure, intensify the war against corruption, propose bailout measures for privatized companies and ensure fair and sincere democracy.Type of Paper: Conceptual.

Download or read book Global Financial Crisis and Nigerian Stock Market Volatility written by Abdul Adamu and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current global financial crisis is no longer news but a reality. Our policy makers in the country have been proven wrong based on their argument that the country was insulated. Some of the sectors that have felt the heat of the crisis are the banking sector and the stock market. In the stock market, investors lost trillions of naira due the downward fall in the prices of stock. Based on this, the study assesses the extent of the stock market volatility in the period preceding the crisis and the period of the crisis. Using the All Share Index, the returns for various months were computed, descriptive statistics of the returns was calculated and the volatility of the market was estimated using the standard deviation. It was found that the stock market is highly volatile in the period of the financial crisis than the period preceding it. The recommendation is that the depth of instruments in the stock market should be varied in terms of fixed securities than equity instruments.Proceedings of the National Conference on “Managing the challenges of Global Financial Crisis in Developing Economies” organised by Faculty of Administration, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Nigeria.
Book Synopsis Sub-Saharan Africa by : Ms.Catherine A. Pattillo
Download or read book Sub-Saharan Africa written by Ms.Catherine A. Pattillo and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2006-08-28 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Financial sectors in low-income sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are among the world's least developed. In fact, assets in most low-income African countries are smaller than those held by a single medium-sized bank in an industrial country. The absence of deep, efficient financial markets seriously challenges policy making, hinders poverty alleviation, and constrains growth. This book argues that building efficient and sound financial sectors in SSA countries will improve Africa's economic prospects. Based on a review of the key features of financial systems, it discusses the main obstacles and challenges that financial structures pose for SSA economies and recommends steps that could address major shortcomings in implementing the reform agenda.
Book Synopsis Nigerian Economy by : Shafiu Ibrahim Abdullahi
Download or read book Nigerian Economy written by Shafiu Ibrahim Abdullahi and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nigerian economy is very sensitive to happenings in the global crude oil market due to Nigeria dependence on the black gold. The recession Nigeria found herself in 2016 was mainly caused by the fall in the international price of crude oil. It is the same factor that also help to explain Buhari government massive borrowings to help close the gap in government budget since coming to power in 2015. Empirical and theoretical evidences have linked shocks in price of primary products with macroeconomic imbalances. These external shocks are main sources of economic volatility, affecting both private and public savings, in part because of their large income effects. In the years since independence, Nigerian economy has changed from its largely agrarian state of 1960s to an import depended mono-economy. Nigeria single most important export for more than forty years has remain crude oil. But, in the period since independence various economic models have been tested, as many as there were changes in governments. While the adaptation of some of these economic programs were domestically inspired, others were forced on Nigeria from the outside. Efforts to diversify Nigerian economy have been on the Nigerian government agenda since 1980s, but not much has been achieved. Despite the billions of Dollars in oil revenue, Nigerian governments have failed to use the resources to develop other areas of the economy. This book covered almost all the main sectors of the Nigerian economy. The book is encyclopedic in term of coverage of Nigerian business environment and potential threats to ease of doing business. The structure of the book makes it easy for readers to browse through it. Its chapters are grouped according to related themes in the Nigerian economy. The bibliography section provided at the end of the book provide the reader with range of sources for reference and further research.
