Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The uplands are a crucial source of ecosystem services, such as water provision, carbon retention, maintenance of biodiversity, provision of recreation value and cultural heritage. This puts them in the focus of both environmental and social scientists as well as practitioners and land managers.. This volume brings together a wealth of knowledge of the British uplands from diverse but interrelated fields of study, clearly demonstrating their importance in 21st Century Britain, and indicating how we may through interdisciplinary approaches meet the challenges provided by past and future drivers of environmental change. The upland environments are subject to change. They face imminent threats as well as opportunities from pressures such as climate change, changes in land management and related changes in fire risk, increases in erosion and water colour, degradation of habitats, altered wildlife and recreational value, as well as significant changes in the economy of these marginal areas. This book presents up-to-date scientific background information, addresses policy related issues and lays out pressing land management questions. A number of world-class experts provide a review of cutting-edge natural and social science and an assessment of past, current and potential future management strategies, policies and other drivers of change. After appraisal of key concepts and principles, chapters provide specific examples and applications by focussing on UK upland areas and specifically the Peak District National Park as a key example for other highly valuable upland regions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The landscapes of upland Britain have been the focus for a range of debates in recent years over issues such as access, afforestation, farming and planning. However, these landscapes have been neglected and misunderstood by contemporaries in the past and by modern historians. There has been a lack of research into the societies and economies of these areas and the landscapes they created. This volume of specially-commissioned studies helps to redress this balance by examining a range of themes relating to the historic landscapes of areas from Cornwall to the Scottish Highlands. They focus on the roles of continuity and change in shaping the landscapes that are so cherished today as National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. In the process the authors show how even modest gains in altitude can dramatically improve the survival in the landscape of many kinds of site, demonstrating how rich, complex and multi-layered our upland landscapes really are.

Book excerpt: In this report MPs recommend changes to the way money from the EU's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is used to support hill farmers. Farming, in particular grazing livestock, is an essential part of the landscapes and traditional systems of land management in these beautiful and fragile areas. A return to headage payments in limited circumstances, with appropriate environmental conditions to prevent overstocking, would provide fairer funding to hill farmers. The Committee also calls on the Government to do more to enable hill farmers to diversify into other land management activities-such as carbon storage and water quality schemes. The report calls on the Government to demonstrate a stronger commitment to upland communities. Having abolished the Commission for Rural Communities - the public body that advised Government on rural issues -the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs must ensure that rural policies and their delivery are not neglected. Ministers should: publish a strategy for the uplands that sets out a clear action plan with practical measures to be implemented immediately; provide strong leadership to make sure that rural and upland communities get a fair deal; create a statutory definition of the uplands to assist in targeting policy; ensure all farmers and rural communities can get access to development grants once RDAs have been abolished; work across Government to put in place policies that support those that live and work in the uplands, in particular rolling out super-fast broadband for remote rural communities and increasing the availability of affordable housing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scotland is at the heart of modern, sustainable upland management. Large estates cover vast areas of the uplands, with a long, complex and emotive history of ownership and use. In recent decades, the Scottish uplands have increasingly been the arena for passionate debates over large-scale land management issues. Crucially, what kinds of ownership and management will best deliver sustainable futures for upland environments and communities? Although the globally unique dominance of private ownership remains a distinctive characteristic of Scotland's uplands, increasing numbers of estates are now owned by environmental NGOs and local communities, especially since the Land Reform (Scotland) Act of 2003. A decade after the passage of this landmark Act, this book synthesises research carried out on a diverse range of upland estates by the Centre for Mountain Studies at Perth College, University of the Highlands and Islands. The findings from privately-owned estates as well as those owned by communities, charities and conservation groups will prove enlightening and relevant to upland managers, policy makers, and researchers across Britain and Europe. With the Scottish Government promoting a vision of environmental sustainability, and with the new diversity of ownerships and management now appearing, this timely and topical book investigates the implications of these different types of land ownership for sustainable upland management.
