Book excerpt: A concise textbook focusing on organisational behaviour in the African context, this book is featured in Routledge’s new Essentials of Business and Management in Africa shortform textbook series. This book covers organisational behaviour concepts applicable to the African continent and its varied cultures. Chapters thoroughly explore topics including personal and individual factors, motivation, decision making and communication, groups and teams, leadership and influence, conflict, and negotiation. Each chapter refers to aspects of the African context such as cultural values, Ubuntu, and the informal economy and relates these to the topics discussed. The book includes illustrative real-life examples, vignettes, mini-cases and exercises. Undergraduate and postgraduate students in Africa, and with an interest in the area, will appreciate the focus on a region so little discussed in the business and management literature. Filling a gap in the literature and including a dearth of material, this book will also appeal to current and future practicing managers in African countries, as well as those employed in government and by Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs).

Book Synopsis Routledge Handbook of Organizational Change in Africa by : Franca Ovadje
Download or read book Routledge Handbook of Organizational Change in Africa written by Franca Ovadje and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although change management and therefore effective adaptation to environmental complexity is considered a uniquely human cultural activity, the extensive change management literature is largely based on the experiences of organizations in the advanced economies of the West. As the economies of African countries become increasingly open, African organizations will need to be agile in order to adapt and grow in a dynamic, global environment. Currently, there is a dearth of contextualized knowledge on change management within Africa, but this handbook aims to address this by bringing together a wide range of experts to explore organizational change and change management from an African context. The handbook adopts a multidisciplinary (historical, philosophical, processual, and strategic) perspective as well as empirical accounts of change management. It addresses such issues as: What are the external and internal pressures for change? What is the content and process of change management? What are the essentials of effective change management? How can change management be theorized from an African perspective? What sort of leadership can best align with change management demands in an African context? How do organizations build internal change management capability? It is hoped that answers to these questions contained in the handbook will provide a contextualized understanding of change management which African organizations and scholars can leverage to respond to the threats and opportunities inherent in their increasingly dynamic environment. The handbook should constitute an essential reference for academics, researchers, and advanced students of change management, development studies, and African studies, as well as practitioners.

Book Synopsis LEAD: Leadership Effectiveness in Africa and the African Diaspora by : Terri R. Lituchy
Download or read book LEAD: Leadership Effectiveness in Africa and the African Diaspora written by Terri R. Lituchy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-02 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers the new business environment of modern-day Africa, addressing how management styles must adapt to societal changes across the continent. As investment in the continent grows and African businesses begin to look beyond their own borders, there comes a real need to understand leadership from an Afro-centric perspective. This book explores the similarities and differences across African countries, compares them with other regions, and identifies particular cultural realities that managers must consider in order to be successful in the new business environment of modern Africa. Building on their Leadership Effectiveness in Africa and the African Diaspora (LEAD) research project, the authors provide an empirical understanding of African leadership styles and how businesses can harness these more effectively. Drawing on the African Diaspora’s values, beliefs, and preferences, as well as anecdotal material from African academics and managers, this book grants a realistic view of leadership in various African countries including Egypt, Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, and South Africa. It will be invaluable to academics, students, and anyone interested in African and global business leadership from a non-Western perspective.
Book Synopsis Critical management studies in the South African context by : Geoff A. Goldman
Download or read book Critical management studies in the South African context written by Geoff A. Goldman and published by AOSIS. This book was released on 2016-12-31 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to establish the first formalised scholarly work on critical management studies (CMS) in the South African context. The book is a collection of seven chapters, six of which employ a conceptual methodology and one of which follows an interpretive paradigm employing qualitative methods of inquiry. CMS is a relatively young school of thought, arising in the early 1990s and still very much a peripheral movement within the academic discipline of management. South Africa has very little scholarship on CMS as precious few scholars work in this space. Furthermore, publication opportunities are virtually non-existent as CMS is virtually unknown in the South African community of management scholars. Thus, this book represents the first academic work on CMS published in South Africa, written and reviewed by scholars who are familiar with the field. The primary target readership would be management academics, but it could also be a useful reference for postgraduate students in management.
