Book excerpt: Because decisions about selecting and managing replacement beef heifers can affect the future productivity of an entire cowherd, programs to develop breeding heifers have focused on the physiological processes that influence puberty. The timing of puberty critical to whether a heifer remains in the herd and whether lifetime productivity is optimized. This publication focuses on the management considerations that need to be taken in beef heifer development.

Book excerpt: Experiments were conducted to evaluate a broad range of factors that may influence growth and reproductive performance of replacement heifers. In Exp. 1, 109 Angus crossbred heifers were used to determine the effects of hormonal implants administered during the suckling phase on replacement heifer growth and reproductive performance. Implanted heifers had greater WW (P = 0.03) and BW at breeding (P = 0.09); however, onset of puberty and conception rates did not differ between treatments (P = 0.67). In Exp. 2, 81 Angus crossbred heifers were utilized to evaluate use of irrigated cool-season annual forage in post-weaning development. Heifers were assigned to triticale or native range pastures, plus protein supplement. In yr 1, heifers gained 0.09 and 0.27 kg/d (P = 0.21) when grazing native range and triticale, respectively. In yr. 2, heifers grazing triticale gained 0.76 compared to 0.42 kg kg per d (P = 0.03) for native range. In Exp. 3. 129 Angus crossed and Brangus heifers were assigned to either; CAKE, which consisted of a 1.9 cm pellet (20% CP, as fed basis) or Dried Distillers Grains plus Solubles, There was no difference in animal growth performance (P > 0.25), or in reproductive traits (P = 0.60). A two-year study (Exp. 4), in which 133 Angus-crossed heifers were fed different levels of supplement in order to achieve varying amounts of gain before breeding. Treatments were: 1) heifers were fed to achieve a high rate of gain for 28 d, then low for the next 28 d (HL); 2) Low rate of gain for 28 d then high gains for the last half of the 56 d period (LH); or a moderate rate of gain throughout the 56 d feeding period (MOD). There was no difference (P > 0.36) in animal performance or reproductive status across all treatments. Experiment 5 was designed to evaluate the use of irrigated warm-season annual forage as a means of developing heifers in the post-breeding period. Twenty-four Angus-crossed heifers were assigned to graze either sorghum x sudangrass or pearl millet 45 d after the breeding season. There was no difference (P > 0.52) between treatment groups in bred heifer performance. Similar performance between forages suggests that either is a reasonable choice for growing young pregnant beef heifers.

Book excerpt: Sachse Family Angus is both a commercial and registered Angus cow-calf operation in Northeast Kansas and has been in operation since 1935. The end goal in mind is to provide quality female breeding seedstock to other beef producers with the hopes of improving their herds. Successful selection and development of beef replacement heifers have major long term effects on stayability in any herd and can even have a positive impact on the whole herd. The objective of this study is to create a decision tool to determine best heifer selection strategies. Specifically, taking a look at the cost of heifer development under a range of scenarios as it applies to more traditional heifer development. The depth of literature addressing the issue of buying or raising replacement heifers is vast, providing various degrees of analysis to help a producer make the best informed decision. Some economists would argue that no single aspect of beef production management is as complicated, or has such an economic impact as cow culling and replacement heifer decisions (Melton, 1980). Procedures and methods were created to analyze whether a producer should raise or develop their own replacement heifers. One method used in creating a decision tool is an enterprise budget. Enterprise budgeting is the systematic determination and listing of expected outputs, revenues, and costs due to the production processes required to produce one unit of an enterprise for a specified time period. To take this one step further, it is assumed a producer makes choices with respect to the combinations of productive factors and products. Partial budgets include an analysis of net returns from small changes or refinement to a ranch. It focuses on parts that change while building upon an enterprise budget. In essence, it fine tunes current operations while holding all else constant. The benefits of partial budgeting take a look at what will be the new or added revenue if a change is implemented on the ranch and what costs will be reduced or eliminated if taken place. What will be the new or added costs and what revenues will be reduced if a change takes place are also things to keep in mind. Therefore, the result will show a producer the net benefit of the change. In turn, Sachse Family Angus will use this information to build their registered and commercial replacement heifers either by developing their own or purchasing from other breeders. Overtime, this decision will be critical as it will impact their herd for years to come. In conclusion, maintaining a good sound, high functioning beef cow herd means selecting and developing quality replacement heifers to retain in the herd each year. An estimated 20% of heifers born each year at Sachse Family Angus are kept as replacement heifers. When managing home raised heifers or purchased heifers, maintaining costs and keeping them in check is crucial because they represent a large up-front investment. The bottom line of this research is to give the managers at Sachse Family Angus and other operations across the country a decision tool that can be used to analyze their current resources and the resources it will take to develop their own heifers successfully and in the most cost effective way or help them analyze if purchasing their heifers makes the most financial sense.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four experiments were conducted to evaluate estrus synchronization and heifer development systems. In the first experiment delaying AI 19 h following GnRH administration in a hybrid estrus detection and time AI protocol was evaluated. Final pregnancy rate was not different among heifers detected in estrus, AI at the time GnRH administration, or delayed AI. The second study compared the effect of melengestrol acetate (MGA) -PG and 14-d controlled internal drug release (CIDR) -PG estrus synchronization protocols on estrus response and pregnancy rates of 311 d old heifers. Final pregnancy rate was similar between CIDR and MGA treatment groups. The objective of the third study was to determine the impact of heifer development system on subsequent growth and reproductive performance in 2 breeding seasons. Heifers were offered ad libitum meadow hay (HAY) and 1.81 kg/d (29% CP, DM basis) supplement or allowed to graze meadow (MDW) and 0.45 kg/d supplement. Although ADG during the winter feeding period was greater for HAY heifers, BW was similar between treatments in the spring, summer, and at pregnancy diagnosis suggesting a compensatory growth effect for MDW heifers. Similarly, pubertal status or pregnancy rate was not different, indicating a lower input winter management system is viable to maintain heifer pubertal status and pregnancy rates in 2 breeding seasons. Finally, to determine the impact of heifer development system on pregnancy rates and feed efficiency as a pregnant first calf heifer a 3 yr study was conducted. In Yr 1, weaned heifers either grazed corn residue (CR) or were fed in a drylot (DLHI). In Yr 2 and 3 heifers either grazed CR, upland range (RANGE), or were fed diets differing in energy, high (DLHI) or low (DLLO), in a drylot setting. Pregnancy rates to AI were similar among treatments. A subset of AI-pregnant heifers from each treatment were placed in a Calan gate system. Intake did not differ among treatments, either as DMI or as a percentage of BW.
