Book excerpt: In Before Conflict: Preventing Aggressive Behavior, John Byrnes gets to the heart of the concept of aggression prevention. Rather than look strictly at violence and all its implications_fatalities, crime, and assault_Byrnes instead chooses to look ahead, in order to prevent violence rather than simply to act in reaction to it. By using a unique methodology of 'Aggression Management,' those responsible for the safety of others may circumvent the standard practice of mere 'conflict resolution' by dealing with the problem before it creates conflict. Because everyone experiences and manages anger differently, 'Aggression Management' teaches readers not only how to measure their own aggression, but that of others as well. The result empowers the reader to stop problems before they even develop. This book is recommended for anyone responsible for the safety of others, especially people who work in the fields of education, health care and social services, law enforcement, the retail food service industry, and the U.S. Postal Service.

Book excerpt: The only resource available that summarizes a variety of approaches to assaultive behavior, this useful text aids professionals who work with assaultive youths by providing concrete techniques that may help to reduce, and when necessary, control violent behavior. Experts also explore systematic methods for responding to an assault in progress so that potential harm to all parties is mitigated and a working relationship with the assaultive youth is maintained. Contributors provide a continuum of intervention procedures, including prevention techniques, verbal and nonverbal strategies, and the use of mechanical restraints. The valuable techniques offered here do not require a great deal of training, nor do they depend a great deal upon one's theoretical orientation.

Book excerpt: Scarcely a day passes without the media detailing some form of human aggression, whether it be on its grandest scale in the form of war, random bombings and shootings in the streets, torture in a prison camp, murder by gangs, wife abuse resulting in the murder of the husband, or the physical abuse of children, sometimes resulting in their death. Frequently perpetrators of human aggression, when arrested and tried in court, resort to a psychiatric defense. But are all such aggressors indeed appropriately psychiatric patients? And if so, what are their particular diagnoses and how do these relate to aggression? Also of concern is aggression directed against self, as evidenced in the rising incidence of suicide among young people or the self-mutilation of patients suffering from certain personality disorders. Both violence directed outward and aggression toward oneself pose considerable challenges to clinical management, whether in the therapist's office or in the inpatient unit. Although we have not been able to find successful deterrents to aggression, a sizeable body of evidence does exist, certainly of a descriptive nature. Such data for psychiatric patients are scattered, however, and can be found in literatures as diverse as the biological, ethological, epidemiological, legal, philosophical, psychological, psychiatric, and crimi nological. Therefore, given the increased frequency with which mental health professionals encounter cases of violence in their day-to-day work, we believed it important that existing data be adduced in one comprehensive volume.

Book excerpt: Proceedings of the XIV World Meeting of the International Society for the Research on Aggression: Prevention and Control of Aggression and the Impact on its Victims, held in July 9-14, 2000, in Valencia, Spain. Aggression is an aspect of human society that has interested scientists for many decades, and their work has provided important knowledge about its causes and way to prevent and control this behavior. However, not only scientists but many professionals working in the wide spectrum of society, from family to international policy, are interested in having programs of interventions capable of reducing aggression and violence in our society. This comprehensive book is a compendium of most research approaches that are currently taking place in the field of aggression, focusing on the interventions to control and prevent this behavior and the impact on its victims. The chapters of the book include biological approaches to aggression, such as neuroanatomy, neurochemistry, neuroendocrinology, genetics and psychopathology; information about aggression in children and adolescents in different settings such as family, school and community; characteristics if aggression in specific relationships such as marital and sexual, and specific settings such as bars, prisons and traffic; and cultural approaches to aggression, social prejudice, war and programs of peace. Furthermore, a small number of representative chapters about victims are included, ranging from the impact of aggression on behavior and physiology in animal models to victims of war. As this book highlights, the interventions to prevent and control aggression have to be diverse (highly heterogenic) in order to deal with all aspects of human beings and society, ranging from pharmacological control in individuals to programs of peace to promote respect among people and among nations. Scientists, academics and professionals dealing with any facet of aggression and its impact on our society will obtain in this book information about the complexity of this research field and the ways to approach our objective: eliminate aggression from the human behavioral repertoire.
