Book excerpt: "Are you ready to Man Up? According to national statistics, over fifty percent of you working men are unhappy in your jobs. In Star Man, author Gary Combs asks: Is it your work that really bothers you? Or, could you be wrestling with a mixed sense of purpose or conflicting priorities that keep boiling inside? If you are among the men who tend to barricade themselves in their man-caves, turning inward and seeking their own solutions, then what is really holding you back? Star Man tackles these questions head-on from a uniquely male perspective. Tracing five major areas of a man's daily life - love relationships, family focus, work life, community involvement, and health issues - Combs develops a balanced approach to ensuring that all five areas are given their rightful place. In each aspect, he moves you quickly to a self-assessment of your everyday questions: 1. My days are so full of "busyness" Who has time to think anymore? 2. I keep saying, "Someday I'll _____." Will that day ever come? 3. How can I make sure it does? Filling each area of daily concern with personal anecdotes and humorous man-talk, often poking fun at the way men speak (and the way women hear), Star Man concludes with the thought provoking point that every man is looking for some greater meaning. With conviction, Combs suggests that God is acting at the center of all that a man does, whether or not he realizes it. Star man concludes with the encouraging reminder and personal witness that every man is sustained by God's strength and His grace. It is in recognizing His divine influence and following His will that you find the answers you seek." "Star Man can help any man-especially those in their thirties, forties, and fifties-take the steps necessary to regain balance. Don't hesitate-let Gary's messages help you forge your path to a more balanced life today!" -Floyd Gilbert President, National PresbyterianMen(PCUSA) "Star Man will hit home for lots of men, especially those who feel uncertain about their priorities and need to get centered again!" -Don Douglas, Vice President of Church Growth, International Cooperating Ministries

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Money is both a vibrant, dynamic material substance and a social force that permeates industrial societies in their entirety. Yet significant aspects of how money works in society are concealed by myths, dogmas, and misperceptions. In The Power of Money Henry Bretton focuses on how money works in a democracy. He contends that the well-being of political democracy depends on a fuller understanding of the centrality of money in politics, and he presents his ideas on monetary policy, corruption and reform, banking and politics, private power within a democracy, money in international relations, and the system-destroying effects of money. Bretton considers the subject of money and democracy in the context of how monetarization of societies proceeded form antiquity to the Industrial Revolution, and he analyzes the formative years of the United States in terms of being based on political ideas that did not take account of monetarization. He reviews what social theorists and economists from Aristotle to Friedman have thought about the role of money in society and how it affects individual behavior and social norms. The link between economics and politics has been only partially explored, he contends, and he sees the major task for social scientists as developing a fuller integration of the two mainstreams of social theory, the political and the economic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macroeconomics, which along with microeconomics forms one of the two most general fields of studies in economics, deals with an economy as a whole—national, regional and global. This textbook on macroeconomics in its second edition makes significant contribution to teaching and learning of the subject. Macroeconomics texts that are available present mathematical models and theories without using mathematics. Hence, students find it difficult to get a clear idea of the theories presented. Using elementary tools of school level mathematics, this book presents the theories mathematically and illustrates them diagrammatically. The purpose is to give the students a clear vision of the theories presented. Meanings of every equation, every expression and intuition of every result are clearly explained. Every mathematical step involved in the derivation of the results is fully explained. Upon reading this book, a student will learn how to construct a macroeconomic model mathematically, how to illustrate the solution of the model diagrammatically and how to carry out stability analysis and comparative static exercises mathematically and diagrammatically. The book presents both Keynesian and neoclassical macroeconomic theories lucidly, evaluates them in the light of real life experiences and makes a comparative assessment of the two schools of thought in macroeconomics. In this respect also, this book constitutes a unique contribution as a textbook of macroeconomics. KEY FEATURES • Explains the concepts in an easy-to-understand language. • Includes numerous exercises within the text as well as at the end of each chapter. • Illustrates the concepts with the help of examples, figures and tables. NEW TO THE EDITION • Chapters 3, 9 and 10 have been revised thoroughly to add new insights into the theories presented there. • Some of the other chapters have also been revised to improve their quality and coverage. • The data tables have also been updated to illustrate the applications of the theories using recent data. • Solution hints have been added to most of the difficult problems. • This book is intended mainly as a text for undergraduate and postgraduate students of Economics for their courses in Macroeconomics. Besides, students of management will also find the book immensely useful in acquiring fundamental knowledge of macroeconomics, which is crucial for making business decisions. TARGET AUDIENCE • BA/B.Sc.—Economics on Macroeconomics. • MA/M.Sc.—Economics on Macroeconomics. • MBA—Most B–schools have a paper on Macroeconomics in their MBA programme.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tapestry of global queer cultures Africa has long been neglected or stereotyped. In Hungochani, Marc Epprecht seeks to change these limited views by tracing Southern Africa's history and traditions of homosexuality, modern gay and lesbian identities, and the vibrant gay rights movement that has emerged since the 1980s. Epprecht explores the diverse ways African cultures traditionally explained same-sex sexuality and follows the emergence of new forms of gender identity and sexuality that evolved with the introduction of capitalism, colonial rule, and Christian education. Using oral testimony, memoirs, literature, criminal court records, and early government enquiries from the eighteenth century to the present, he traces the complex origins of homophobia. By bringing forth a wealth of evidence about once-hidden sexual behaviour, Epprecht contributes to the honest, open discussion that is urgently needed in the battle against HIV/AIDS. Homosexuality - or hungochani as it is known in Zimbabwe - has been denounced by many politicians and church leaders as an example of how Western decadence has corrupted African traditions. However, a bold, new gay rights movement has emerged in several of the countries of the region since the 1980s, offering an exciting new dimension in the broad struggle for human rights and democracy unfolding on the continent. In a new preface to this edition, Epprecht considers the recent advances of equality on the continent such as the legalization of same-sex marriage in South Africa, as well as discriminatory setbacks such as Uganda's anti-homosexuality legislation.

Book excerpt: This is a classic study of how managers interpret and engage problems as they are experienced and felt at various points and levels in factories and businesses. Melville Dalton, drawing on ethnographic data, examines both positive and negative interactions among managers, between managers and between workers, and managers and firms. He discusses the consequences for each group that result from their interactions. Where relevance and data allow, Dalton relates his findings to the surrounding community. Dalton argues that the recurring problem areas in management grow out of six main areas: pressures for economy of operation; "cooperation" of officially powerless experts with their administrative superiors; local conflicts between union and management; uncertainty about the route to a place in middle and upper management; the task of recognizing and rewarding differential contributions; and the moral conflicts of the individual executive. Each of these six problem areas is made the subject of a chapter. What emerges is a study of compromises among key individuals and groups in business organizations, and of the strictures on compromise. The book offers insights into how workplace rules, in practice, move from being sacred guides to flexible tools to balance company goals and personal ends. This volume includes a new introduction by David Shulman detailing the importance of this work more than forty years after its original publication. It is part of Transaction's Organization and Business series.

This book was released on 2008-02-14 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like the first edition, the second edition of Readings in the Philosophy of Religion covers topics in a point-counterpoint manner, specifically designed to foster deep reflection. Unique to this collection is the section on the divine attributes. The book’s focus is on issues of fundamental human concern—God’s suffering, hell, prayer, feminist theology, and religious pluralism. All of these are shown, in a lengthy introduction, to relate to the standard issues in philosophical theology—omnipotence, omniscience, immutability, goodness, and eternity. For this second edition, each major section ends with an extended reflection by a philosopher who shows how to think through the issues raised in the preceding essays. Also included are a new section on the ontological argument with classical discussions by Anselm and Gaunilo, along with a new essay by Laura Garcia; a new section on religious language; new essays on the free will defense, theodicies, and feminist theology; and a new version of the cosmological argument that does not rely on the principle of sufficient reason.
