Book excerpt: Excerpt from Malta and the Knights Hospitallers When the traveller to the East has accomplished half of his Mediterranean voyage, which is generally on the fourth day after leaving Gibraltar, he enters the Malta channel, a stretch of sea between Sicily on the north, the snowy peak of Etna occasionally making itself visible, and on the south a rocky shore, which swells gradually up to hills of some 600 or 700 feet in height, without trees, and therefore presenting a heavy though undulating outline; about a third of its surface bare rock, and the other two-thirds partitioned off into small fields by enclosures of loose stones similar to those of Westmoreland or the North Riding. This is gozo, and his eye will inform him that the country is productive and highly cultivated, even if another sense is not pene trated by the odour of garlic, the favourite green crop of the Gozo farmer. The fields in March are red with clover blossom; the orange groves are in flower or fruit all the year long, yet there is no vacuity or want of energy about the people. Passing the mouth of the strait of Comino where, upon the little island of the same name, the nu lucky Su/tan man of war was wrecked a few years ago, the steeper cliffs of the western coast-line of Malta come into view, in colour of a bright orange, and the eye can distinctly make out that great geological fault which traverses both islands, as Mr. Adams so happily says, just as if Atlas had raised the entire island group to the level of the higher plateau, when a large portion in the middle gave way and sank, leaving the remainder of Malta south-eastward. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Knights Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem, Vol. 3: Styled Afterwards, the Knights of Rhodes, and at Present, the Knights of Malta The prince paid a just deference to this advice, set out immediately for Rhodes, and arrived there on Aug. 20, 1454. His presence was indeed very necessary. Mahomet, the haughtiest and proudest man breathing, enraged at the resolute answer that the knights made his ambassador, swore their ruin, and the destruction of Rhodes; and, out of his eagerness to be revenged, had just sent thirty gallies, as the harbingers of his fury, who had by his command ravaged the coasts of the isles of the order. Of all the neighbouring princes, whom his vast ambition made him look upon as his enemies, there was none more odious to him, or whom he suffered more impatiently in the midst of his territories, than the grand masters of Rhodes. He intended the year following to fall upon that isle, and extirpate the whole order of St. John: but he was obliged to defer that enterprise upon news of a powerful league that was formed against him for the defence of Hungary. Pope Calixtus III. was the head of it; and besides the king of Hungary, he had engaged in it successively one after another, Alphonsus king of Arragon, Philip duke of Burgundy, the republicks of Venice and Genoa, the new grand master of Rhodes, and several princes of Italy. Charles VII. king of France was strongly solicited by a legate, whom the pope had font him on purpose, to join his forces with those of the allies. The pontiff too, upon that prince's appearing averse to leave his dominions, had wrote to him in imperious terms. But those times were now no more, when popes, either out of a true zeal for religion, or political views, could easily carry their point, under the specious pretext of crusades and holy wars, of banishing, as we may say, emperors and other sovereigns into the farthest parts of the east. This occurred A. D. 1309, when these soldiers of the cross took possession of the Island of Rhodes in the Aegean Sea, and set up a political government of their own. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Knights of Malta: Or the Order of St. John of Jerusalem I would also observe that as the chronicles on which most of the earlier part of the narrative is based are written in either French or Italian, the proper names, as therein given, have been sometimes woefully distorted. More particularly is this the case where these are English. As far as possible, the attempt has been made to suggest the real names referred to, but in many instances this is practically impossible, and I have been coni pelled to retain the foreign nomenclature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Knights of Malta, 1523-1798 The Hospitallers had realised, as early as 1300, that their former r61e of mounted Knights fighting on land was gone for ever. From their seizure of Rhodes, in 1310, they became predominantly sea men, whose. flag, with its eight-pointed cross, struck terror into every infidel heart. Nothing but a combination of Christian monarchs could cope with the superiority of the Turk on land: by sea he was still vulnerable. The Knights took up their new part with all their old energy and determination: it is but typical that henceforward we never hear of the Knights of Malta fighting as cavalry. After various adventures the fleet found itself united at Messina, whence it proceeded to Baiae. The election to the papacy of the Cardinal de' Medici - one of their own Order - as Clement VIL, gave the Knights a powerful protector. He assigned Viterbo as a residence for the Order till a permanent home had been discovered. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
