Download or read book Tom a Lincoln written by Thomas Heywood and published by Oxford [England] : Published for the Malone Society by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discovered in 1973, the manuscript for this unpublished and untitled Jacobean play is transcribed in five hands. A long romance on the life and deeds of Tom a Lincoln, or the Red Rose Knight, it dates from around 1611 and appears to contain allusions to or echoes of Henry IV, Hamlet, King Lear, and Shakespeare's late plays. One scene is imitated from Thomas Heywood's Rape of Lucrece (1608), and this, together with the evidence of its vocabulary, raises the possibility that the play was written by Heywood. How much of the play is parody is not certain. In this edition, Proudfoot describes the manuscript and hands in detail, and provides contexts for the play's genre and authorship. There are texts of eleven other short pieces in the manuscript, including memoranda, and poems in English and Welsh.
Book Synopsis Collections XVIII by : Siobhan Keenan
Download or read book Collections XVIII written by Siobhan Keenan and published by Malone Society. This book was released on 2020-12 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all the tales to be found in Boccaccio's Decameron, the tragic story of King Tancred's efforts to frustrate the love of his daughter Gismond for Guiscardo, was probably the best known and most popular in Renaissance England. This Collections volume brings together the earliest texts of the first and last pre-1642 plays to deal with the lovers' story: the Inner Temple tragedy, Gismond of Salern (1568), and a much-revised play probably by amateur Warwickshire dramatist John Newdigate (1620s). It presents the first modern transcription of the Hargrave MS of Gismond of Salern and the first ever printed edition of Newdigate's untitled play, here named Glausamond and Fidelia. Together, the plays offer fresh proof of the important influence of Boccaccio, and Italian literature on English Renaissance drama. They are also fascinating examples of the period's amateur drama, of interest to all scholars and students of early modern English theatre.

Book excerpt: When four friends get together to use a mystical Ouija board, they are astonished when they come into contact with the restless spirit of a teenage girl from New Jersey, who lived her life during the 1970s. They soon find themselves wandering through the woods at night in search of her diary. However, once they begin to read it they are treated to an unexpected tale filled with unspeakable acts and heinous brutal crimes. It becomes apparent that the restless soul of young Audrey Malone Frayer has unfinished business, which she needs tending to and it appears she’s chosen them to help her. In this second novel by Jason Medina, author of “No Hope for the Hopeless at Kings Park,” we are treated to a special story that ties an adolescent girl’s troubled times of the 1970s with the lives of four young people in the present, particularly the character named Jay, who feels especially attached to Audrey’s spirit. Somehow he forms a bond with her, while reading her diary, which takes control of him making him obsessed with trying to help her take care of her unfinished business. He feels like there is a connection between them that he cannot ignore, although the meaning of that connection remains a mystery to him. It begins to haunt him almost immediately from the moment he first made contact with her spirit. Will he be able to figure out the connections between the past and the present in time, before it is too late? Someone’s life may very well depend upon it and it could be his own!

Book Synopsis Sweet Chariot by : Ann Patton Malone
Download or read book Sweet Chariot written by Ann Patton Malone and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sweet Chariot is a pathbreaking analysis of slave families and household composition in the nineteenth-century South. Ann Malone presents a carefully drawn picture of the ways in which slaves were constituted into families and households within a community and shows how and why that organization changed through the years. Her book, based on massive research, is both a statistical study over time of 155 slave communities in twenty-six Louisiana parishes and a descriptive study of three plantations: Oakland, Petite Anse, and Tiger Island. Malone first provides a regional analysis of family, household, and community organization. Then, drawing on qualitative sources, she discusses patterns in slave family household organization, identifying the most significant ones as well as those that consistantly acted as indicators of change. Malone shows that slave community organization strongly reflected where each community was in its own developmental cycle, which in turn was influenced by myriad factors, ranging from impersonal economic conditions to the arbitrary decisions of individual owners. She also projects a statistical model that can be used for comparisons with other populations. The two persistent themes that Malone uncovers are the mutability and yet the constancy of Louisiana slave household organization. She shows that the slave family and its extensions, the slave household and community, were far more diverse and adaptable than previously believed. The real strength of the slave comunity was its multiplicity of forms, its tolerance for a variety of domestic units and its adaptability. She finds, for example, that the preferred family form consisted of two parents and children but that all types of families and households were accepted as functioning and contributing members of the slave community. "Louisiana slaves had a well-defined and collective vision of the structure that would serve them best and an iron determination to attain it, " Malone observes. "But along with this constancy in vision and perseverance was flexibility. Slave domestic forms in Louisiana bent like willows in the wind to keep from shattering. The suppleness of their forms prevented domestic chaos and enabled most slave communities to recover from even serious crises."
