Book Synopsis Milton's Legacy in the Arts by : Albert C. Labriola
Download or read book Milton's Legacy in the Arts written by Albert C. Labriola and published by Penn State University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Milton's influence upon poets and poetry has been broadly and specifically studied often in collections of essays. The present volume of original essays, by emphasizing and classifying Milton's influence on the arts other than poetry, is a significant addition to interdisciplinary scholarship. The editors choose to interpret John Good's words literally--Milton's influence "was powerfully felt upon all the multiplied forms and phases of eighteenth century life"--and to examine the implications of that assertion even into twentieth-century life. No other volume considers the certainty or possibility of Milton's influence on arts as diverse as oratorio, opera, drama, dance, book illustration, sculpture, and landscape architecture. Beyond Milton's well-documented influence on poets and poetry, the contributors focus their attention on the other arts and other creative artists whose imaginations were nevertheless affected by the poet Milton, at times profoundly so. Their chief aim is to be representative, not fully comprehensive, in defining, describing, and demonstrating the manifold influence of Milton on the other arts. A related aim is to motivate others to do likewise. Divided into three parts--Milton and book illustrations, Milton and the performing arts, and Milton and the philosophy of form--this book makes a central and significant point about the impact of Milton's work on the imaginations of artists in various disciplines throughout the following centuries. Indeed, for many of the works of art analyzed in the present volume, Milton must be considered their "onlie begetter."

Download or read book The Callas Legacy written by John Ardoin and published by New York : Scribner ; Toronto : Collier Macmillan Canada ; New York : Maxwell Macmillan International. This book was released on 1991 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Ardoin analyzes every recording made by Maria Callas, the most influential of twentieth-century opera singers and one of the most prolific recording artists of all time. John Ardoin's expert recommendations in this biography through sound will guide both opera neophyte and opera fanatic to the best of Callas' many recordings, all of which have been reissued on compact disc, including the legendary live performances captured on so-called pirate recordings, and Ardoin also specifies which live versions have the best sound. With a new epilogue, analysis of newly discovered performances discussed in no other book, previously unpublished photographs, as well as an essay on Callas by playwright Terrence McNally written especially for this compact disc edition, the Callas Legacy remains, as Beverly Sills says, the only book on the soprano "completely worthy of her artistry."--Back cover.

Download or read book Our Forest Legacy written by Chris Maser and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This detailed critique and history of US forest policy and laws asks the question 'Why are forests essential to human culture?' Connecting the material with spiritual aspects of human life, this study examines the ecological history of forest systems to convey the necessity of a 'living trust' between the forests and humans to ensure the future livelihood of both. The key natural elements of the forest, such as nutrient cycles, weather patterns, and air filtering are discussed in relationship to their effect on human life. A look at human interactions and intervention with the forest, including forest fires, the creation of the United States Forest Service, and the recent federal Healthy Forests Initiative illustrate how humans have chosen to interact with the forest, often to the forest's detriment.
