Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Making the Farm Pay Modern farming, as the author views the subject, requires varied information as well as unflagging zeal and industry. It needs the application of commercial ideas. Real success in agriculture can only be attained by keeping up with changing conditions and developing a well-balanced business programme to go with the tilling of the soil. The average land owner, or the old-fashioned farmer, as he is sometimes referred to, has a great deal of practical knowledge, and yet is deficient in some of the most salient requirements. He may know how to produce a good crop and not know how to sell it to the best advantage. No citizen surpasses him in the skill and industry with which he performs his labor, but in many cases his time is frittered away with the least profitable of products, while he overlooks opportunities to meet a constant market demand for articles which return large profits. Worse than this, he follows a method which turns agricultural work into drudgery, and his sons and daughters forsake the farm home as soon as they are old enough to assert a little independence. At this point the greatest failures are to be recorded. A situation has developed as a result of these existing conditions in the country which is a serious menace to American society. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Make the Farm Pay: Or the Farmer's Book of Practical Information on Agriculture, Stock Raising, Fruit Culture, Special Crops, Domestic Economy and Family Medicine In this land of schools, where every child can have an educa tion, knowledge is easily disseminated. Improved methods of culture can be spread broadcast over the land by means of books and papers. For these reasons American farmers are more intelligent than the same class in any other country. Few farmers are now so ignorant as to scoff at agricultural informa tion. They desire it, and welcome it. The trouble has been and is, that it is not given them in a form adapted to their wants. There have been many technical and scientific Works, containing most valuable information, but in language not readily under. Stood. These works are very largely theoretical, and the practical is not so distinctly separated as to be easily applied. They have performed a noble service, for without the informa tion they have contained, but little advance would have been made. A better plan is to do a little at a time, and in that way the labor is less and results more satisfactory. Select perfect roasting ears of sweet corn - not over-ripe nor under-ripe - plunge immediately after picking into unsalted boiling water, cover closely, and boil actively about five minutes, or just enough to set the starch and milk. Book excerpt: Excerpt from We Farm for a Hobby: And Make It Pay Unless your memory is abnormally short you recall that 1932 was the year the roof of the world nearly fell in. Civilization appeared to be crum bling to bits. The least pessimistic could foresee some such crisis as that which culminated in the bank holiday of 1933. I have never been a bull on the United States nor, in fact, of bullish tem perament. My way is to expect the worst and pre pare for it. So it was in the fall of 1932 that I took serious thought of what I, and my family, could do to hedge against the economic and social disaster that appeared about to engulf the nation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How the Farm Pays: The Experiences of Forty Years of Successful Farming and Gardening Question. What, in your opinion, Mr. Crozier, are the chances of making a farm pay, if the owner is unable to superintend it himself, and has to rely on the knowledge of hired superintendence? This is a question that has been asked me scores of times each season, in regard to the business of market gardening, and my unvarying reply has been, that the chances for success are all against the person undertaking such a business under such conditions. Carver, is being issued at a very opportune time. The problem of farm manage ment is becoming more and more-serious every year. It is not that there is any falling off in production; in fact there has been a great increase in production in the last fifteen years. In practically every line America is today producing a surplus crop. The problem of farming, rather than the purely agricultural end, is more and more demanding attention. The farmer must learn now to organize his farm activities, and Bulletin No. 39 contains some 'sound and valuable information calculated to help the average farmer in this direction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Making Farm Woodland Improvement Pay: June 1953 The small woodland owner commonly objects to practicing good forest management on the grounds that It costs too much to get started or I haven°t got the time or money to invest in it. To help solve this perennial economic problem of small forest manage ment, the Carbondale Research Center of the Central States Forest Experiment Station set up two farm woodland demonstration areas on its Kaskaskia Experimental Forest in Illinois. The demonstrations are intended to show how farm labor can be used for woods work dur ing slack seasons and to show that producing timber can add to the farm income. This report gives the financial results of the first three years operation. Farm woodland management is especially important in the Central Region because so much of the forest land is owned by farm ers. In fact, in southern Illinois and vicinity, three-fourths of the forest area is in such small woodlands. So continued timber production in the region depends greatly upon the small forest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Young Farmer's Manual, Vol. 2: Or, How to Make Farming Pay, Giving Plain and Practical Details of General Farm Management; With a Chapter on Soils, and Their Cultivation, and Much Other Valuable Matter of a Practical Character The first volume of the young farmer's manual treats of Mechanical Agriculture, and should be read with this, as it is intimately connected with it. The first chapter of this volume is made up of brief articles on the General Management of the Farm. The chapters bn Soils, Pulverization, and Fertilizers, are as brief as they can be, in order to give a young farmer a thorough understanding of that branch of agriculture. A good knowledge of these branches lies at the very foundation of a good system of Farming. My first volume was written while I lived on a farm near Lake Ridge, Tompkins County, N. Y where I was born, and resided until I was forty years of age. From Lake Ridge I removed to Auburn, N. Y. In the former part of 1865, I moved my family to New York City. Read the Preface to Volume I. I have endeavored to reduce the scientific to practice; and I think no intelligent reader will fail, with a dictionary, to get a correct idea on every subject, as I have aimed at simplicity of style. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Capacity to Pay and Farm Financing Sheets in the farm account files of the Department of Agricultural Economics, University of Illinois. These cash incomes refer to the operators, not to the farms operated. For owners, they cover the entire farm income; for part owners or tenants, they cover only the part owner's or tenant's share of the total farm income. In caleu lating these and certain other factors, use was made of the office data sheet shown in the Appendix, page 225. The tenure of the operator greatly affects the amount of capital needed. Furthermore the source of credit, the type of security given, and the interest charges all affect either the risk created by borrowing or the cost of such borrowing. Consequently in the following discus sion the facts pertaining to these points in the debt situation on the farms are described briefly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Farm Income Situation: February 1941 The revised estimate of cash income from farm marketings and Government payments for December 1940 of 842 million dollars was 5 percent higher than in December 1939. Increases in income were recorded in all major geographic regions of the country and ranged from 2 percent in the South Central region to 9 percent in the South Atlantic and Western regions. December income in 33 of the 48 States was larger than a year earlier, with the greatest ih creases occurring in Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Montana. The greatest declines were in Louisiana, Maine, Nevada, and North Dakota. The decline in cash farm income from November to December in the North Atlantic region was about the same as in other recent years. In the East North Central region cash income from farm marketings increased slightly from November to December instead of making the usual seasonal decline and was 13 percent higher than in the year earlier. There was a slight increase in cash income from farm marketings in the West North Central region also, and ih come from farm marketings was substantially higher than in the year earlier, but because of smaller Government payments income totaled only 3 percent higher than in November. In the remaining geographic regions the decline in cash farm income from November to December was of about the usual seasonal amounts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hidden Treasure: The Story of a Chore Boy, Who Made the Old Farm Pay A few, years ago the author visited the farm in Western Pennsylvania on which he had lived for a number of years when a boy. Much to his surprise there was not a boy of his acquaintance still on the neighboring farms, many of which had passed into other hands, and in some cases even the names of the original owners had been forgotten. He bumped over the two short miles of road, still deep with mud, between the town and the farm, and could scarcely recognize in the weedy fields before him, with their broken-down fences partly concealed by undergrowth, the fertile acres of his boyhood. The orchard, once kept so neatly pruned, was now filled with trees that were gnarled and broken - while the rich bottom land, so productive in years past, was foul with all manner of rank growth. The lane lead ing up to the house from the main road was in such bad repair that he had to leave his automobile on the main road and complete his journey on foot. Gazing into the misty mirror of the past, I have endeavoured, in these sketches, in some measure to pay the debt of gratitude I owe the Goddess of Fortune for starting me off on life's journey amid such surroundings. I hold to the belief that one born and raised in the country - it may be in a log cabin and on a bush farm - has a distinct advantage over those unfortunates who, from infancy, have been doomed to artificial ways - city pavements - and so missed the delights of woodland places, hawthorn lanes and the innumerable joys that pertain to rural life. Canada still has vast stretches of forest and plain invitingly awaiting the coming of the homemakers. And those dear, if homely and natural, pleasures that I have essayed to recall in these "Old Days on the Farm" chapters, are still, in a degree, to be found and enjoyed by those who may adventure in the field of pioneer agriculture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Successful Farming: How to Farm for Profit, the Latest Methods His methods, and in the second year of his manage ment the farm yielded a profit of two thousand dolhrs; making a difference of seven thousand dollars per year. This is ofi'ered as evidence that_. Mr Rennie' e principles of agriculture are founded on a profit gaining basis; it also proves that a knowledge of these scientific principles is necessary to the success of any farmer. The author recognized this fact. And his purport in writing this book has been to thoroughly explain in simple language the principles of science as applied to farming. All the ideas set forth in the book may be readily carried out; no impracticable theories are advanced. The article on Alfalfa clover is especially valuable, and should be carefuhy studied by every reader of this book. -the sections on the Restoring and Maintaining of Soil Fertility, the Destruction of Noxious Weeds, the Conservation of Soil Moisture, Shallow Plowing and Crop Rotation are also of special importance. Every department of the farm and farm-home has been given the most thorough attention, and if farmers will carry out the easily-followed scientific principles, they may reson ably expect an increase in profits and a saving of labor, which will add pleasure and zest to their daily duties.
