Book excerpt: This Element provides a comprehensive yet concise account of scientific research on children's religious and spiritual (RS) development. After providing a historical sketch of definitional issues in the science of RS, the first section reviews basic descriptive information on children's RS development as well as wholistic theoretical models and measures of children's RS development. The second section covers evidence about links of child and parental RS to children's psychosocial adjustment, and highlights the need for more research that discriminates specific positive and negative manifestations of RS for children's development. The third section summarizes evidence about the robust influence of parents on their children's RS development and parents' perceptions of their role in this process. The fourth section focuses on cognitive-developmental research on children's cognitions about God/deities and prayer. The Element concludes with a synopsis of key themes and challenges that researchers face to advance the science of children's RS development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultivating the Spirit THIS GROUNDBREAKING WORK IS BASED on a five-year study of how students change during the college years and the role college plays in facilitating the development of their spiritual qualities. Students, the authors argue, grapple with the big questions in life: Who am I? What are my values? Do I have a mission in life? Why am I in college? What kind of person do I want to be? What sort of world do I want to help to create? Their answers to these questions help determine their academic and career choices and are tied to the development of personal qualities such as empathy, caring, and social responsibility. The study finds that, while students' religious engagement declines during college, at the same time they become substantially more caring, tolerant, connected with others, and actively egaged in a spiritual quest. Spiritual growth also enhances academic performance, leadership development, and satisfaction with college. The study provides strong evidence pointing to specific experiences during college that can contribute to students' spiritual growth. The need for spiritual development in college is apparent. Two-thirds of the students in the study express a strong interest in spiritual matters, well over half report that their professors never encourage discussions of religious or spiritual matters, and about the same proportion report that professors never provide opportunities to discuss the purpose and meaning of life. Cultivating the Spirit aims to raise the awareness of academic administrators, faculty, and the public at large to the vital role that spirituality plays in student learning and development. Throughout the book, the authors identify strategies for enhancing students' development and encourage the academy to give greater priority to the spiritual aspects of students' educational and personal development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise for 'Spirituality and the Curriculum' "The current interest in spirituality shows no sign of abating. This volume consists of a useful set of essays from educationalists and theologians. Overall the volume will be important reading not only for teachers of theology but also for those concerned with the spiritual development of children and adults alike." -- Theology, May/June 2000 "This book fizzes. Addressed to those working in an educational context, it is an attempt to speak theologically about spirituality and morality. Adrian Thatcher, its editor, has assembled a group of contributors who write well and who have innovative ideas to communicate. Fresh arguments and new perspectives make it an exciting read as it exposes the distressing emptiness of what passes as secularised spiritual nurture in most contemporary schools. Its seminal chapter is by Mary Grey. What an imaginative tour de force this is. She is not afraid to speak of the Transcendent or to see the wider value of liberation and feminist theologies. What [Adrian Thatcher] offers is a sharp critique of the high sounding moral sentiments of the present generation of curriculum makers. There is a vision here which can reach beyond Christianity and which ought to be taken account of by parents and teachers. Again, prophetic in its own way, it is controversial. Ian Markham's short chapter is a gem.... Adrian Thatcher has given us a refreshing book which reasserts the right of theology to be heard in the current debate about the spiritual dimension of education. But that is not the point. What he wishes us to do is to think further, better and more fairly about the issues which are before us. That surely is something we all must do. This book is a marvellous help in this. Buy it." British Journal of Religious Education 23.1 (Autumn 2000) "It offers an informed, critical, accessible and thought-provoking set of reflections on the possible connections that might be made between spirituality and the curriculum, especially at school level. It helps it the task of establishing a credibility of spirituality as a valid dimension of the curriculum. It also offers some guidance for educators as to how they might approach this area and offers some valuable insights into aspects of practice." -- The Heythrop Journal 41.4 (October 2000) "It is rarely possible to do justice to books which contain a number of substantial essays because there is seldom space to give adequate consideration to all the contributors and this collection is no exception....The book will be of most use to those researching this subject, but I would hope that it might also be read by theologians who may see it as an invitation to them to focus more of their attention on theology and education." Resource: Professional Reflection on Theory and Practice in Religious Education 23.2 (Spring 2001) "...there is much good material for those who wish to work with the spiritual, moral, social and cultural dimensions of their school or colleges environments, shaping or challenging the power structures in which they operate and determining the ethos which they seek to encourage. Those involved in religious education or student services or educational policy will all find articles to stimulate the current debate as to whether theology and/or spirituality can create community, consensus and so nurture a more humane experience within education." -- Tim Macquiban, Journal of Beliefs and Values 22.1 (2001)

Book excerpt: Nurturing Child and Adolescent Spirituality: Perspectives from the World's Religious Traditions provides a forum for prominent religious scholars to examine the state of religious knowledge and theological reflection on spiritual development in childhood and adolescence. Featuring essays from thinkers representing the world's major religious traditions, the book introduces new voices, challenges assumptions, raises new questions, and broadens the base of knowledge and investment in this important domain of life. It specifically and intentionally focuses on theological and philosophical perspectives from within religious traditions, creating space for the religious traditions to find their voices. Nurturing Child and Adolescent Spirituality is firmly grounded in the language and priorities of religious studies, and helps stimulate explorations of whether and how religious communities are tapping their own wisdom and strengths in nurturing today's young people in a complex and changing world. Nurturing Child and Adolescent Spirituality will set the stage for new waves of scholarship and dialogue within and across traditions, disciplines, and cultures that will enrich understanding and strengthen how the world's religious traditions, and others, understand and cultivate the spiritual lives of children and adolescents around the globe.

Book excerpt: Bringing together a never-before-assembled network of biologists, psychologists, and sociologists, Positive Youth Development and Spirituality scientifically examines how spirituality and its cultivation may affect the positive development of adolescents. Chapters provide groundbreaking new discussions of conceptual, theoretical, definitional, and methodological issues that need to be addressed when exploring the relationships between spirituality and development. Throughout the book, contributors recommend ways in which the research on the spirituality/positive youth development connection may be integral in building the larger field of spiritual development as a legitimate and active domain of developmental science. This volume, which is sure to be seen as a seminal contribution to a field in need of theoretical underpinnings, will be of interest to scholars and scientists in the fields of biology and the social and behavioral sciences. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spirituality, education and society: An integrated approach argues the value of spirituality in education as a way to address the lived experiences and personal knowledge of students, with the goal of creating a more holistic, transformative educational process. This edited volume has a wide array of viewpoints which all point to the importance of spirituality in the authors’ personal lives, their communities and society at large. Spirituality is conceptualised as a base from which to challenge dominant forms of knowing, while in the process being able to center and engage with an important aspect of the student that has been missing from current evaluations – their spiritual selves.Within the diversity of this volume it becomes evident that spirituality cannot be confined to a singular definition and that educators must be willing to create spaces to foster spiritual growth and exploration if we are to break away from the commoditized, disempowering system that is so dominant today. This edited collection is a valuable resource for students, practitioners, educators and administrators who wish to engage in transformational schooling. Its multidisciplinary approach engages ideas around critical pedagogy, sociology of education, and inclusive schooling. There is an increasing need for exploring novel paradigms of studying education in the context of the dynamics that straddle social, economic and technological processes that have come to characterize the world in recent years. This book is a timely contribution in this respect as its focus transcends hitherto applied approaches that depend largely on western orientation. The book breaks new grounds in studying education and society that find significant relevance in societies that are marginalized by the dominant western understanding. The authors draw from the rich heritage of spirituality that is akin to the non-western social paradigms to develop a rigorous but creative concept of schooling. I am sure practitioners, researchers and students of education will find it a valuable source of practical and theoretical information that would widen their horizon of understanding of sociology of education. - Tom Mongare Ndege, PhD, Moi University, Kenya The editors have compiled a brilliant collection of essays. Each piece of scholarly work shows how spirituality is a paramount part of our everyday lives and is connected to teaching, learning, living and healing. This is a timely and most relevant work that is sure to spur critical dialogue and discussion. This collection shows that while the spirit may be wounded it can never be broken. - Erica Neeganagwedgin, PhD, University of Toronto
