Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How and why has the Korean state changed its way of handling the society and its markets over the past two decades? The Changing Role of the Korean State finds that the explosion of contentious civil society after democratization coeval with the outbreak of the financial crisis following rapid economic growth, are closely associated with the decline of developmentalism. Despite these profound changes, however, the Korean state has not totally relinquished its control over the society and the market. Rather, although its methods have been altered it remains to be highly interventionalist and regulatory in nature. The state continues to use its influence to restructure the socio-economic system and rationally manage spatial arrangements. The book amply demonstrates the residual legacy of the developmental state in Korea, and it is unlikely that Korea will ever accept the western liberalist concept of a state which limits its function to that of a referee for the spontaneous operation of the civil society and the market. The contributors of this edited volume delineate the shifting role of the Korean state from the developmental state, which led economic development by guiding investment in strategic industries through various means, to a slightly subtler role as a regulator, supervising the operation of the market in the changing economic environment. Individual chapters presented here address this changing but nonetheless vital role that the state plays in managing the variety of modern socio-economic life in South Korea. Hong Yung Lee is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at University of California, Berkeley. Sunil Kim is Assistant Professor of International Studies at Kyung Hee University.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aesthetic Constructions of Korean Nationalism chooses expositions, museums and the urban built environment at particular moments in both colonial and postcolonial eras and analyses their discursive relations in the construction of Korean nationalism. By linking concepts of visual spectacle, space and governmentality, this book explores how visual spectacles and spaces made the nation imaginable to the public in both the past and the present; how they represented a new modality of seeing for the state and contributed to the shaping of collective identities in colonial and postcolonial Korea; and how their different modes were associated with the change in governmentality in Korea. In addressing these questions, the book interprets the politics behind the culture of displays and shows both the continuity and the transformation of spectacles as a governing technology in twentieth-century Korea.

Book excerpt: Born poor in the wake of the Korean war, Lee Myung-Bak was destined for a life of poverty. But through intelligence and self-determination, he excelled in school, putting himself through college, hauling garbage six times a day to pay for tuition. He then took a low-level job at Hyundai, an organization of about 90 people at the time. Through a relentless work ethic and inability to compromise his beliefs, he rose to the role of CEO and found himself on a mission not just to expand the Hyundai corporation, but to grow South Korea from a nation of poverty to a G20 economy. The Uncharted Path is the story of a man and nation driven to greatness by a conviction to liberty, commerce, and the belief that at the root of every success lies extreme perseverance and uncompromising principles. These principles and lessons would lead not only to success in business, but also developed a refreshing and unique perspective on the state of our globalizing world, and how nations and businesses must operate together to improve the lives of people everywhere.

Yeo, Catholic University of America An important contribution to the literature on nationalism and contemporary Korean studies. --Nora Kim, University of Mary Washington Why have traditional views of national identity in South Korea¿views that for years drove a demand for reunification¿been challenged so dramatically in recent years? What explains the growing ambivalence and even antagonism of South Korean young people toward unification with North Korea? Emma Campbell addresses these related puzzles, exploring the emergence of a new kind of nationalism in South Korea and considering what this development means for the country¿s future. Emma Campbell is visiting fellow at the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre, College of Asia and the Pacific, Australian National University.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive and balanced history of modern Korea explores the social, economic, and political issues it has faced since being catapulted into the wider world at the end of the nineteenth century. Placing this formerly insular society in a global context, Michael J. Seth describes how this ancient, culturally and ethnically homogeneous society first fell victim to Japanese imperialist expansionism, and then was arbitrarily divided in half after World War II. Seth traces the postwar paths of the two Koreas with different political and social systems and different geopolitical orientations as they evolved into sharply contrasting societies. South Korea, after an unpromising start, became one of the few postcolonial developing states to enter the ranks of the first world, with a globally competitive economy, a democratic political system, and a cosmopolitan and dynamic culture. By contrast, North Korea became one of the world's most totalitarian and isolated societies, a nuclear power with an impoverished and famine-stricken population. Considering the radically different and historically unprecedented trajectories of the two Koreas, Seth assesses the insights they offer for understanding not only modern Korea but the broader perspective of world history."
