Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Makers of Georgia's Name and Fame This book is meant as a supplementary reader for children of the Third and Fourth Grades in Georgia schools. It is not intended as a history to take the place of any other book previously before the educational public of the state. By means of interesting stories and characteristic incidents, the book makes an effort to acquaint Georgia children with the greater number of the men whose names adorn the pages of our state history. It thus proposes in some measure to prepare children who read it for the study of Georgia history proper. The author dares to hope that our Georgia boys and girls will gain much encouragement and inspiration from the examples of the heroes whose unselfish and noble deeds are herein retold. The poem which graces the first pages was written especially for this book by one of Georgia's sweetest singers, Charles W. Hubner, of the Carnegie Library, Atlanta. Dr. H. J. Gaertner, of the Normal and Industrial College at Milledgeville, has graciously permitted the use of his poem, "Georgia." To both of these gentlemen thanks are due. Book excerpt: A new perspective on Jewish history in the South Diane Catherine Vecchio examines the diverse economic experiences of Jews who settled in Upcountry (now called Upstate) South Carolina. Like other parts of the so-called New South, the Upcountry was a center of textile manufacturing and new business opportunities that drew entrepreneurial energy to the region. Working with a rich set of oral histories, memoirs, and traditional historical documents, Vecchio provides an important corrective to the history of manufacturing in South Carolina. She explores Jewish community development and describes how Jewish business leaders also became civic leaders and affected social, political, and cultural life. The Jewish community's impact on all facets of life across the Upcountry is vital to understanding the growth of today's Spartanburg–Greenville corridor.

Book excerpt: This reference volume is intended for both the casual and the most avid blues fan. It is divided into five separately introduced sections and covers 50 artists with names like Muddy, Gatemouth and Hound Dog who helped shape 20th-century American music. Beginning with the pioneering Mississippi Delta bluesmen, the book then follows the spread of the genre to the city, in the section on the Chicago Blues School. The third segment covers the Texas blues tradition; the fourth, the great blueswomen; and the fifth, the genre's development outside its main schools. The styles covered range from Virginia-Piedmont to Bentonia and from barrelhouse to boogie-woogie. The main text is augmented by substantial discographies and a lengthy bibliography.
