Book excerpt: Excerpt from Major Robert Anderson and Fort Sumter: 1861 ON this, the fiftieth anniversary of the De fence of Fort Sumter by Maj or Robert Anderson, I am writing to present for the veterans who have memory of the events and for the generation which has grown up since the War, a correct narrative of what actually happened and to correct various mis-state ments and misapprehensions which have, dur ing the past half century, been permitted to confuse the history. If the question were to-day asked who was General Anderson, the answer from many citizens of this younger generation might easily be I never heard of him. Others would say He was in command of Fort Sumter; he surrendered the Fort. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: On April 12, 1861, the long-simmering tensions between the American North and South exploded as Southern troops in the seceding state of South Carolina fired on the Federal forces at Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor. The battle of Fort Sumter marked the outbreak of Civil War in the United States. The attack provoked outrage in the North, consolidated support for the newly inaugurated President Lincoln, and fueled the onset of the war that would consume and reshape the country. In this concise narrative, Wesley Moody explores the long history of tensions that lead to the events at Fort Sumter, the details of the crisis and battle, the impact of Fort Sumter on the unfolding Civil War, and the battle's place in historical memory. Supplemented by primary documents including newspaper coverage, first-person accounts, letters, and government documents, and supported by a companion website, this book provides students with a nuanced understanding of both the long-term and immediate origins of the American Civil War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This telegram from Major Robert Anderson to Secretary of War Simon Cameron announces Anderson's withdrawal from Fort Sumter. At 4:30 a.m. on April 12, 1861, the Confederate-controlled Fort Johnson opened fire on Union-held Fort Sumter in the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina. In the resulting 34-hour bombardment, 43 guns at Fort Moultrie, Fort Johnson, a floating gun battery and Cummings Point pounded the island. With no effective way to return fire--the fort had been designed to defend against naval assault--U.S. Army Major Robert Anderson surrendered at 2:30 p.m. the following day, April 13. Miraculously, no causalities had occurred during the bombardment, but a freak explosion claimed the lives of two Union soldiers during the formal surrender ceremonies, making them the first deaths of the war.

Book excerpt: A gripping and original account of how the Civil War began and a second American revolution unfolded, setting Abraham Lincoln on the path to greatness and millions of slaves on the road to freedom. An epic of courage and heroism beyond the battlefields, 1861 introduces us to a heretofore little-known cast of Civil War heroes—among them an acrobatic militia colonel, an explorer’s wife, an idealistic band of German immigrants, a regiment of New York City firemen, a community of Virginia slaves, and a young college professor who would one day become president. Their stories take us from the corridors of the White House to the slums of Manhattan, from the waters of the Chesapeake to the deserts of Nevada, from Boston Common to Alcatraz Island, vividly evoking the Union at its moment of ultimate crisis and decision. Hailed as “exhilarating….Inspiring…Irresistible…” by The New York Times Book Review, Adam Goodheart’s bestseller 1861 is an important addition to the Civil War canon. Includes black-and-white photos and illustrations.
