Book excerpt: The Province of British Columbia Strategic Transportation Plan 1990-2000 will determine the best way to direct both public and private resources in building transportation systems. Regional transportation committees were formed in each of the 8 development regions to prepare plans to determine the present and future needs and priorities of each region; to analyze issues and provide support documentation for recommended improvements; and to recommend a plan that included both short and long term directions. All modes of transportation (air, coastal marine, ferry, highways, ports, rail and transit) were considered. The Mainland/Southwest region established 6 sub-committees and a community advisory committee which provided additional comments on the Greater Vancouver transportation study. This document summarizes the findings of the 6 regional district reports, covering Central Fraser Valley, Dewdney-Alouette, Fraser-Cheam, Greater Vancouver, Squamish-Lillooet, and Sunshine Coast. An economic overview is included, and Great Vancouver also covers population and employment forecasts.

Download or read book Ecological Regions of North America written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents a first attempt at holistically classifying and mapping ecological regions across all three countries of the North American continent. A common analytical methodology is used to examine North American ecology at multiple scales, from large continental ecosystems to subdivisions of these that correlate more detailed physical and biological settings with human activities on two levels of successively smaller units. The volume begins with an overview of North America from an ecological perspective, concepts of ecological regionalization. This is followed by descriptions of the 15 broad ecological regions, including information on physical and biological setting and human activities. The final section presents case studies in applications of the ecological characterization methodology to environmental issues. The appendix includes a list of common and scientific names of selected species characteristic of the ecological regions.

Book Synopsis Pathways to Urban Sustainability by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine

This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities have experienced an unprecedented rate of growth in the last decade. More than half the world's population lives in urban areas, with the U.S. percentage at 80 percent. Cities have captured more than 80 percent of the globe's economic activity and offered social mobility and economic prosperity to millions by clustering creative, innovative, and educated individuals and organizations. Clustering populations, however, can compound both positive and negative conditions, with many modern urban areas experiencing growing inequality, debility, and environmental degradation. The spread and continued growth of urban areas presents a number of concerns for a sustainable future, particularly if cities cannot adequately address the rise of poverty, hunger, resource consumption, and biodiversity loss in their borders. Intended as a comparative illustration of the types of urban sustainability pathways and subsequent lessons learned existing in urban areas, this study examines specific examples that cut across geographies and scales and that feature a range of urban sustainability challenges and opportunities for collaborative learning across metropolitan regions. It focuses on nine cities across the United States and Canada (Los Angeles, CA, New York City, NY, Philadelphia, PA, Pittsburgh, PA, Grand Rapids, MI, Flint, MI, Cedar Rapids, IA, Chattanooga, TN, and Vancouver, Canada), chosen to represent a variety of metropolitan regions, with consideration given to city size, proximity to coastal and other waterways, susceptibility to hazards, primary industry, and several other factors.
Book Synopsis Vanishing British Columbia by : Michael Kluckner
Download or read book Vanishing British Columbia written by Michael Kluckner and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The old buildings and historic places of British Columbia form a kind of "roadside memory," a tangible link with stories of settlement, change, and abandonment that reflect the great themes of BC's history. Michael Kluckner began painting his personal map of the province in a watercolour sketchbook. In 1999, after he put a few of the sketches on his website, a network of correspondents emerged that eventually led him to the family letters, photo albums, and memories from a disappearing era of the province. Vanishing British Columbia is a record of these places and the stories they tell, presenting a compelling argument for stewardship of regional history in the face of urbanization and globalization.
