He was the last in a long line of Arhats in jain tradition. He was born more than 2600 years ago in a royal family in the north-eastern part of modern India. From the very childhood he was inclined towards contemplation. He became a monk at the age of thirty and undertook sever penance for more than twelve years before attaining the Keval jnana at the age of 42. After attaining Keval jnana, the order he established is today known as Jain religion. Jainism, unlike Hinduism and Buddhism, was never a dominant religion in India; however, the influence of Jain philosophy and principles on religious, spiritual and everyday life of ordinary Indian citizens cannot be over-emphasized. Even after 2500 years these principles continue to inspire successive generations to follow the path of ahimsa and anekantavada.
