Book Synopsis Philosophies of Appropriated Religions by : Soraj Hongladarom
Download or read book Philosophies of Appropriated Religions written by Soraj Hongladarom and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024-01-22 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together different intercultural philosophical points of view discussing the philosophical impact of what we call the ‘appropriated’ religions of Southeast Asia. Southeast Asia is home to most of the world religions. Buddhism is predominantly practiced in Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Singapore, Laos, and Cambodia; Islam in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei; and Christianity in the Philippines and Timor-Leste. Historical data show, however, that these world religions are imported cultural products, and have been reimagined, assimilated, and appropriated by the culture that embraced them. In this collection, we see that these ‘appropriated’ religions imply a culturally nuanced worldview, which, in turn, impacts how the traditional problems in the philosophy of religion are framed and answered—in particular, questions about the existence and nature of the divine, the problem of evil, and the nature of life after death. Themes explored include: religious belief and digital transition, Theravāda Buddhist philosophy, religious diversity, Buddhism and omniscience, indigenous belief systems, divine apology and unmerited human suffering, dialetheism and the problem of evil, Buddhist philosophy and Spinoza’s views on death and immortality, belief and everyday realities in the Philippines, comparative religious philosophy, gendering the Hindu concept of dharma, Christian devotion and salvation during the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines through the writings of Jose Rizal, indigenous Islamic practices in the Philippines, practiced traditions in contemporary Filipino celebrations of Christmas, role of place-aspects in the appropriation of religions in Southeast Asia, and fate and divine omniscience. This book is of interest to scholars and researchers of philosophy of religion, sociology of religion, anthropology of religion, cultural studies, comparative religion, religious studies, and Asian studies.
Book Synopsis Catholicism Opening to the World and Other Confessions by : Vladimir Latinovic
Download or read book Catholicism Opening to the World and Other Confessions written by Vladimir Latinovic and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-08 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores how Catholicism began and continues to open its doors to the wider world and to other confessions in embracing ecumenism, thanks to the vision and legacy of the Second Vatican Council. It explores such themes as the twentieth century context preceding the council; parallels between Vatican II and previous councils; its distinctively pastoral character; the legacy of the council in relation to issues such as church-world dynamics, as well as to ethics, social justice, economic activity. Several chapters discuss the role of women in the church before, during, and since the council. Others discern inculturation in relation to Vatican II. The book also contains a wide and original range of ecumenical considerations of the council, including by and in relation to Free Church, Reformed, Orthodox, and Anglican perspectives. Finally, it considers the Council’s ongoing promise and remaining challenges with regard to ecumenical issues, including a groundbreaking essay on the future of ecumenical dialogue by Cardinal Walter Kasper.

Book Synopsis America's Church by : Thomas A. Tweed
Download or read book America's Church written by Thomas A. Tweed and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Shrine in Washington, DC has been deeply loved, blithely ignored, and passionately criticized. It has been praised as a "dazzling jewel" and dismissed as a "towering Byzantine beach ball." In this intriguing and inventive book, Thomas Tweed shows that the Shrine is also an illuminating site from which to tell the story of twentieth-century Catholicism. He organizes his narrative around six themes that characterize U.S. Catholicism, and he ties these themes to the Shrine's material culture--to images, artifacts, or devotional spaces. Thus he begins with the Basilica's foundation stone, weaving it into a discussion of "brick and mortar" Catholicism, the drive to build institutions. To highlight the Church's inclination to appeal to women, he looks at fund-raising for the Mary Memorial Altar, and he focuses on the Filipino oratory to Our Lady of Antipolo to illustrate the Church's outreach to immigrants. Throughout, he employs painstaking detective work to shine a light on the many facets of American Catholicism reflected in the shrine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Touched By Grace: The Journey began forty years ago in 1974 when Anna Maria heard a voice that told her she will write. Not convinced, she chose a path that led her away from writing. As she started a family, God's graces just became too evident for her to ignore. In October 2014, she began writing about life events that she believed were an orchestration of circumstances that led her to a wonderful realization of God's grace. She asked God what she was going to do with her stories. In February 2015, her first story was published online by Guideposts magazine. She now presents her first compilation of short personal stories. Everything fell quite effortlessly on her lap. She now believes her mission is to spread stories of God's grace as well as to nurture perseverance in prayers. Her collection of true personal stories will inspire everyone to live his or her life knowing that God's grace is everywhere, from a seemingly trivial coincidence to some really awe-inspiring event. Her stories are also a witness to the power of prayer in everyone's lives, as long as we truly believe and are willing to Let Go and Let God.
