Book excerpt: For more than 30 years the investigation of heavy-fermion (HF) metals has been one of the most fascinating and interesting fields in condensed matter physics both experimentally and theoretically. The HF phenomenon is observed in compounds containing rare-earth elements such as, e.g., Ce or Yb. The ground-state properties of these systems is considered to result from a competition between the Kondo effect and the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction. The Kondo effect induces a screening of the local 4f moments by the conduction electrons and, thus, favors a nonmagnetic ground state. By contrast, the indirect RKKY interaction promotes a magnetic ordering of the local moments. Therefore, depending on the strength of these interactions, the ground state of a HF compound ranges from paramagnetic (PM) to magnetically ordered. Even interplay between magnetism and superconductivity is observed in some materials. High-pressure experiments are of particular interest because for a given system the ground state can be tuned by external pressure (p). In the case of Yb-based Kondo-lattice systems, pressure stabilizes the magnetic state, while for Ce-based Kondo-lattice compounds pressure favors a non-magnetic ground state. Therefore, pressure is an ideal tool to tune a HF material through a zero-temperature magnetic instability in order to study quantum critical behavior in its vicinity. The present thesis addresses the effect of pressure, magnetic field, and temperature on the properties of the rare-earth compounds Yb(Rh0.94Ir0.06)2Si2, YbIr2Si2, and CeRuPO. Electrical resistivity measurements under pressure have been performed in order to investigate the evolution of the ground-state properties and to search for the putative QCP supposed to exist in the studied HF materials. At atmospheric pressure, Yb(Rh0.94Ir0.06)2Si2 does not order down to 20mK. Applying a small pressure, AFM order is observed at low temperatures. Upon further increasing pressure, the magnetic transition temperature increases, and a second magnetic transition appears inside the ordered state. The electrical resistivity measurements under pressure suggest that, at ambient pressure, Yb(Rh0.94Ir0.06)2Si2 orders slightly below 20 mK. The T- p phase diagram of Yb(Rh0.94Ir0.06)2Si2 and of YbRh2Si2 can be superposed by shifting the pressure axis of Yb(Rh0.94Ir0.06)2Si2 by ?p = -0.06 GPa. The electrical resistivity studies indicate that in Yb(Rh0.94Ir0.06)2Si2, Ir substitution acts primarily as negative chemical pressure and disorder effects play only a minor role. The results point at the existence of a pressure (volume) controlled quantum critical point (QCP) at a hypothetical negative critical pressure of pc = -0.25GPa. The ambient-pressure thermodynamic and transport properties of YbRh2Si2 reveal a PM ground state, in contrast to the Rh-homolog which possesses a magnetic ground state being situated in the direct vicinity to an AFM QCP. Application of pressure on YbRh2Si2 is expected to tune the system through a QCP, providing a unique opportunity to investigate the physical properties at and around a pressure (volume) controlled magnetic QCP in a clean stoichiometric Yb system. The Landau Fermi-liquid (LFL) state observed at low temperatures at ambient pressure survives in the pressure range up to pLFLc ÷ 3 GPa. With further increasing pressure, the resistivity shows a temperature dependence weaker than quadratic. This, so-called, non Fermi-liquid (NFL) behavior observed down to the lowest temperatures extends up to the critical pressure, pc ÷ 8 GPa, where magnetic order sets in. This broad region of NFL behavior might reveal the existence of a novel type of metallic phase. The magnetic order develops suddenly hinting at a first-order transition at pc. With further increasing pressure, the magnetic state is stabilized. The high-T resistivity studies allow to determine the pressure evolution of the Kondo and crystalline electric field (CEF) energy scales. In the PM region, the CEF splitting is independent of p, while TK decreases exponentially in the same pressure range. At about the critical pressure, a low-lying Kondo scale and the excited CEF levels at higher temperatures can be clearly resolved. At ambient pressure CeRuPO is a FM Kondo-lattice system with TC = 14 K and TK ÷ 10 K. So far, the behavior at a FM QCP in a Kondo-lattice system is not settled. Therefore, pressure studies on CeRuPO offer the great opportunity to investigate the suppression of FM order in a Ce-based Kondo-lattice system. Upon applying pressure the magnetic ordering temperature in CeRuPO shifts toward lower temperatures. Furthermore, the ground state of CeRuPO changes from FM to AFM order at p* ÷ (0.87 ö 1.01) GPa. Our results indicate a critical pressure of pc ÷ 3 GPa where the magnetic transition temperature is suppressed to zero temperature in a first-order like way. Therefore, we come to the conclusion that a magnetic QCP does not exist in CeRuPO. Beyond pc, LFL behavior was observed at low temperatures, in support of our previous conclusion. The pressure evolution of the high-T electrical resistivity cannot be understood in a simple picture for a Ce-based HF metal considering a dominant Kondo energy scale. At low pressures, the temperature dependence of the resistivity above the magnetic transition is strongly affected by the Kondo effect, magnetic fluctuations, and CEF splitting. At higher pressures, the contribution to ?(T) from Kondo scattering on the ground state and on excited CEF levels can be separated. Our study indicates that CeRuPO is a further example of a FM system in which application of pressure suppresses the magnetic order, but also destabilizes FM order in favour of an AFM one, preventing the appearance of a FM QCP.

The competition and interplay between the localized magnetic moments in partially filled d or f electron systems and the itinerant conduction electrons states lead to novel phenomena such as complex magnetic properties, unconventional superconductivity, non-Fermi-liquid behavior, and the coexistence of superconductivity and magnetism. Such intriguing physical phenomena can be achieved by tuning the system with a control parameter, such as chemical composition, applied pressure, and magnetic field. It is interesting to study the chemical substitution effects on the correlated f electron system along with magnetic field to explore their complex phase diagram. This dissertation work focuses on experimental studies of the Ce and Eu substituted filled skutterudite system PrPt4Ge12 over a wide range of doping, magnetic field, and temperature using heat capacity measurements. The first study will focus on the specific heat and electrical resistivity measurements performed on the Pr[subscript 1-x]Ce[subscript x]Pt4Ge12 crystals. We have found that Ce monotonically suppresses the superconducting transition temperature T[subscript c] and a small Ce concentration of x = 0.14 brings the T[subscript c] to as low as 0.6 K. We further have demonstrate that small Ce substitution does not affect the multiband nature of superconductivity seen previously in the parent compound PrPt4Ge12. On the other hand, our data provide evidence that one of the two gaps is nodal in the parent compound and that Ce substitution gradually suppresses the value of the nodal gap. To understand the possible interplay between superconductivity and magnetism, we study the same parent system PrPt4Ge12, this time substituting Pr with europium. The compound so formed is Pr[subscript 1-x]Eu[subscript x]Pt4Ge12 whose end members are superconductor (x = 0) and antiferromagnetic (x = 1) at lower temperatures, so that there is the possibility of interaction between superconductivity and magnetism in the intermediate doping range. The increase of Eu concentration leads to a suppression of the superconducting transition temperature as in the case of cerium substitution. There is a low temperature heat capacity anomaly present over the whole doping range. Our analysis of the heat capacity data shows that in alloys with x = 0.5 the Schottky peaks in the heat capacity in the superconducting state appear to be due to Zeeman splitting by an internal magnetic field. Our theoretical analysis suggests that this internal magnetic field is a result of short-range antiferromagnetic correlations between the europium ions. We further investigated the effect of Eu substitution on the Pr site through heat capacity measurements on the same system in an applied magnetic field. Book excerpt: We report experimentally results on the low temperature properties of two classes of materials with a special emphasizes near the QCP induced by substitution and magnetic 1.field: (1) the HF systems YbRh2(Si0.95Ge0.05)2, Yb1-yLayRh2Si2 (y = 0.05, 0.1), and YbIr2Si2 with tetragonal structures and CeIn3-xSnx (x = 0.55, 0.6, 0.65, 0.7, 0.8) with cubic structure; (2) the quantum spin systems: Cs2CuCl4 and Cs2CoCl4. In all the HF compounds we have observed NFL behavior in zero magnetic field close to the QCP. The La substituted system does not show an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition down to the lowest accessible temperature (0.03 K) while in YbRh2(Si1-xGex)2 with x = 0 and x = 0.05 AFM transitions occur at TN =0.07 K and 0.02 K, respectively. For Yb0.9La0.1Rh2Si2 we observe below 0.07 K saturation of DeltaC/T indicating clearly a LFL state for this concentration. For YbIr2Si2, DeltaC/T saturates below 0.5 K. In contrast to the Yb based compounds in the vicinity of the QCP, CeIn3-xSnx shows no evidence of a divergence in Delta C/T, with B or with x. Furthermore, we used specic heat measurements in the mK temperature range and at high fields (up to 12 T) to probe the phase diagrams in the low dimensional quantum antiferromagnets Cs2CuCl4 and Cs2CoCl4. In applied magnetic field, we have presented experimental evidence that in Cs2CuCl4 the field dependence of the critical temperature Tc(B) ~ (Bc-B)^1-Phi close to the critical field Bc = 8.51 T is well described with Phi=1.5. This is in very good agreement with the exponent expected in the mean-field approximation and support the notion of a Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons in Cs2CuCl4.

Book excerpt: The story of heavy fermions (HF) begun with the discovery of the low temperature behaviour of CeAl3 by Andres et al. in the year 1975 took the momentum after the discovery of superconductivity in CeCu2Si2 by Steglich et al. in the year 1979 . Though HF behaviour is common in the rare-earth elements like Ce, Yb and actinides like U, it is also found to exist in some of the praseodymium (Pr), samarium (Sm) , plutonium (Pu) and more recently in neptunium (Np) systems. These compounds are characterized by the presence of partially filled f-electron bands. At high temperatures, these magnetic moments manifest themselves as a weakly interacting set of local moments of the f electrons with Curie-Weiss susceptibility that coexists with light s or d conduction electrons. But at low temperature, these f-electrons hybridize with conduction electrons near Fermi level via Kondo spin fluctuation which happens through constant exchange spin-flip transition of f-electrons and band electrons in the vicinity of Fermi level. This process leads to a strong mixing of Fermi electrons with the localized f-electrons which is manifested in a renormalization of the Fermi surface and a drastic enhancement of the effective mass of the electrons at Fermi level. Further, in HF systems, electron-phonon interaction (EPI) contributes a lot in manifestation of some of the anomalous behaviour relating to elastic constant, ultrasonic attenuation & sound velocity, anisotropic Fermi surface, Kondo volume collapse etc. In this PhD thesis book in title “Electron phonon interaction and its effect in heavy fermion (HF) systems” the author tries to put some light into the behavoiour of Electron-phonon interaction in describing some of the properties of HF systems at low temperatures. In this 1 st edition, the book has been presented in multicolour edition with profuse colour illustrations so as to increase its clarity, understand ability and legibility, especially of the figures depicted to explain the low temperature behaviour of HF systems. It is hoped that the present book will serve its purpose in attracting young researchers to the field of HF systems. It is my foremost duty to express my deep sense of gratitute to my supervisor Dr. Pratibindhya Nayak , Professor Emeritus, School of Physics, Sambalpur University, Odisha, for his able guidance at every stage of this work..
