Book excerpt: We have studied the magnetic stability in exchange bias and exchange spring systems prepared via epitaxial sputter deposition. The two interfacial exchange coupled systems, Fe/Cr(211) double superlattices consisting of a ferromagnetic and an antiferromagnetic Fe/Cr superlattice that are exchange coupled through a Cr spacer, and Sin-Co/Fe exchange-spring bilayer structures with ferromagnetically coupled hard Sin-Co layer and soft Fe layer, were epitaxially grown on suitably prepared Cr buffer layers to give rise to different microstructure and magnetic anisotropy. The magnetic stability was investigated using the magneto-optic Kerr effect during repeated reversal of the soft layer magnetization by field cycling up to 107 times. For uniaxial Fe/Cr exchange biased double superlattices and exchange spring bilayers with uniaxial Sin-Co, small but rapid initial decay in the exchange bias field HE and in the remanent magnetization is observed. However, the exchange spring bilayers with biaxial and random in-plane anisotropy in the Sin-Co layer shows gradual decay in H{sub E} and without large reduction of the magnetization. The different decay behaviors are attributed to the different microstructure and spin configuration of the pinning layers.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Exchange bias has been a well known property of materials consisting of a ferromagnet interfaced with an antiferromagnet for many years, and the anisotropy resulting from the interaction has recently been nominated as a possible means for overcoming the superparamagnetic limit in high-density magnetic information storage media. However, a generalized theoretical description of the phenomenon remains elusive. More recently, analogues between the exchange bias eect and the behaviours of spin glass materials have become increasingly recognized. In this thesis, the analogues between exchange bias and spin glass systems are explored in a set of concentrated spin glass samples that exhibit a strong sensitivity to short range order of magnetic entities. A number of models were developed to analyze and account for the measurements of magnetization made on these samples. The rst was a simple, empirical model, based on an approximation of non-interacting, monodisperse, superparamagnetic clusters against a paramagnetic background to t single branches of minor hysteresis loops. In this model, the parameter to describe the coercive eld was added ad hoc. Another, more sophisticated, model was based on a modied Stoner-Wohlfarth expression for magnetic clusters and applied to the data using Monte Carlo simulations. The best ts resulted from this model when the cluster easy axis orientations were allowed to have a Gaussian distribution.

" The distinct feature of these nonlinearities is that their future states depend on past histories of input variations. It turns out that memories of hysteresis nonlinearities are quite selective. Indeed, experiments show that only some past input extrema (not the entire input variations) leave their marks upon future states of hysteresis nonlinearities. Thus, special mathematical tools are needed to describe nonlocal selective memories of hysteresis nonlinearities. The origin of such tools can be traced back to the landmark paper of Preisach. The book is primarily concerned with Preisach-type models of hysteresis. All these models have a common generic feature; they are constructed as superposi tions of simplest hysteresis nonlinearities-rectangular loops. The discussion is by and large centered around the following topics: various generalizations and extensions of the classical Preisach model (with special emphasis on vector generalizations), finding of necessary and sufficient conditions for the represen tation of actual hysteresis nonlinearities by various Preisach-type models, solution of identification problems for these models, and numerical implementa tion and experimental testing of Preisach-type models. Although the study of Preisach-type models constitutes the main subject of the book, some effort is also made to establish some interesting connections between these models and such topics as the critical state model for superconducting hysteresis, the classi cal Stoner-Wohlfarth model for vector magnetic hysteresis, thermal activation type models for viscosity, magnetostrictive hysteresis and neural networks.
