Book Synopsis Between Science And Industry: Institutions In The History Of Materials Research by : Robert P Crease
Download or read book Between Science And Industry: Institutions In The History Of Materials Research written by Robert P Crease and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2024-04-22 with total page 755 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials science institutions have always been crucial to the development of materials research. Even before materials science emerged as a discipline in the 20th century, these institutions existed in various forms. They provided specialized facilities for research, educated new generations of researchers, drafted policies and funded programs, enabled valuable connections between research groups, or played any other role which were needed to further the progress of materials science. This volume, the third in a series of volumes covering the development and history of materials science, presents illuminating perspectives on material science institutions. Twenty chapters are organized into six comprehensive parts of which each cover a characteristic aspect or historical feature. True to the topic they write about, the contributors to this volume have varied backgrounds. Some are materials scientists and engineers, but others are historians, philosophers of science, sociologists, or even directors of institutions themselves. This comprehensive, unified collection is a valuable resource for undergraduates, graduate students, academics, policymakers and professionals who are actively interested in materials science and its development from the past to the future.

Book Synopsis Fundamental Scientific Problems in Magnetic Recording by :
Download or read book Fundamental Scientific Problems in Magnetic Recording written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnetic data storage technology is presently leading the high tech industry in advancing device integration--doubling the storage density every 12 months. To continue these advancements and to achieve terra bit per inch squared recording densities, new approaches to store and access data will be needed in about 3-5 years. In this project, collaboration between Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Center for Materials for Information Technology (MINT) at University of Alabama (UA), Imago Scientific Instruments, and Seagate Technologies, was undertaken to address the fundamental scientific problems confronted by the industry in meeting the upcoming challenges. The areas that were the focus of this study were to: (1) develop atom probe tomography for atomic scale imaging of magnetic heterostructures used in magnetic data storage technology; (2) develop a first principles based tools for the study of exchange bias aimed at finding new anti-ferromagnetic materials to reduce the thickness of the pinning layer in the read head; (3) develop high moment magnetic materials and tools to study magnetic switching in nanostructures aimed at developing improved writers of high anisotropy magnetic storage media.
Book Synopsis Magnetic Recording Handbook by : Camras
Download or read book Magnetic Recording Handbook written by Camras and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I started in magnetic recording nearly fifty years ago, it was easy to perceive the common sense of it. There was very little mathematics and every new finding was a source of wonder. I have tried to recapture this spirit with simple explanations, while maintaining a high density of infonnation and cov ering the entire field. This book introduces a novice to magnetic recording and its many branches. It includes reference data for designers and users. Each chapter stands by itself; no prerequisites are essential. For a quick survey, the equations and worked out examples can be disregarded. The magnetic recording art is changing so rapidly that new advances are announced almost every month. These are properly covered by journal articles and manufacturers' catalogs. This book will fulfil its purpose if it gives a back ground for easily comprehending the new advances. I have included subjects and devices not found elsewhere, and some unconventional viewpoints. I would welcome comments from readers. To Jay McKnight I am deeply grateful for important suggestions and helpful comments. I appreciate also the help of BASF, John Boyers, Joseph Dundovic, Charles Ginsburg, Peter Hammar, Yasuo Imaoka, Hal Kaitchuk, Otto Kornei, Harold Miller, Jack Mullin, Jim Novak, Lenard Perlman, Carl Powell, Sidney Rubens, John Shennan, Shigeo Shima, Heinz Thiele, Yoshimi Watanabe and many others; and to my daughter Ruth for typing.
Book Synopsis Micromagnetics and Recording Materials by : Dan Wei
Download or read book Micromagnetics and Recording Materials written by Dan Wei and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-04-28 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Micromagnetics and Recording Materials" is a book trying to give a systematic theory of computational applied magnetism, based on Maxwell equations of fields and Landau-Lifshitz equations of magnetic moments. The focused magnetic materials are magnetic recording materials utilized in computer hard disk drives. Traditionally, “Micromagnetics” includes the areas of “magnetization curve theory", “domain theory" and “read and write process analyses in recording systems”. As Springer Briefs, this book includes the first two areas of micromagnetics. M-H loops of hard magnetic thin film media, soft magnetic layers and Tunneling MagnetoResistive spin valves are solved based on the microstructures of thin films. Static domain structures and dynamic switching processes are analyzed in the arbitrary-shaped magnetic devices such as write head pole tips and magnetic force microscope tips. The book is intended for researchers who are interested in applied magnetism and magnetic recording in all disciples of physical science. Prof. Dan Wei works at Tsinghua University, China.
