Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnanimity is a virtue that has led many lives. Foregrounded early on by Plato as a philosophical virtue par excellence, it became one of the crown jewels in Aristotle's account of human excellence and was accorded equally salient place by other ancient thinkers. It is one of the most distinctive elements of the ancient tradition to filter into the medieval Islamic and Christian worlds. It sparked important intellectual engagements and went on to carve deep tracks through several of the later philosophies to inherit from this tradition. Under changing names and reworked forms, it would continue to breathe in the thought of Descartes and Hume, Kant, and Nietzsche. Its many lives have been joined by important continuities, yet they have also been fragmented by discontinuities -- discontinuities reflecting larger shifts in ethical perspectives and competing answers to questions about the nature of the good life, the moral nature of human beings, and their relationship to the social and natural world they inhabit. They have also been punctuated by moments of intense controversy in which the vision of human greatness has itself been called into doubt. The aim of this volume is to provide an insight into the complex trajectory of a virtue whose glitter has at times been as dazzling as it has been divisive. By exploring the many lives it has lived, we will be in a better position to evaluate whether this is a virtue we still want to make central to our own ethical lives, and why.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the lives of some of the greatest political, intellectual and religious leaders of modern times, and the author’s personal experience, Virtuous Leadership demonstrates that leadership and virtue are not only compatible, they are actually synonymous. Virtuous Leadership defines each of the classical human virtues most essential to leadership – magnanimity, humility, prudence, courage, self-control and justice. It demonstrates how these virtues promote personal transformation and the attainment of self-fulfillment. It also considers the Christian supernatural virtues of faith, hope and charity without which no study of leadership can be complete. The book’s final section, Towards Victory, offers a methodology for the achievement of interior growth tailored to the needs of busy, professional people intent on imbuing their lives with a transcendent purpose. Thus, the aim of Virtuous Leadership is ultimately practical. It is meant to be your guidebook in the quest for excellence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of the Crown of magnanimity as a steady rock at the centre of an increasingly turbulent corporate world. Magnanimity is a tremendously important part of corporate social identity for good and ill. A new era of corporate ethics needs to invade the board rooms and industries and usher in a new way of conducting oneself instead of the old corporate bully. I think The strength of the Crown of magnanimity is that the corporate monarchy is ultimately supposed to stand for the power of the people in that even the grandest of CEO’s, Chairmen, & Shareholders must answer to the people. The Crown’s great skill is to embody that well and The Crown in turn conveys that challenge really skilfully. The Crown of Magnanimity is a powerful symbol that represents a new era of corporate ethics, where corporations are held accountable to the needs and wants of the communities in which they operate. This book is a call to action for corporations to take a more magnanimous approach to doing business, and for individuals to hold corporations accountable for their actions. Together, we can create a future in which corporations act as responsible citizens and in turn, create a better world for all. Furthermore, we will delve into the ethical considerations surrounding corporate magnanimity and the role that corporations should play in society. Should corporations be solely focused on profit, or do they have a greater responsibility to society? How can corporations balance the needs of their shareholders with the needs of the communities in which they operate? These are just a few of the questions that we will explore in this book. The goal of this book is to provide a comprehensive examination of corporate magnanimity and its potential to create a better world for all. Through a thorough examination of the history, current state, and future potential of corporate magnanimity, we hope to inspire and inform future generations of business leaders and policymakers.

Book excerpt: A satire on the boasted wisdom, fortitude, magnanimity, and temperance of man, in the form of a dialogue between Ulysses in the island of Circe, and Gryllus, whom she had changed into a swine, and who now prefers his swinish condition to a return to the human form; Ulysses asks Circe for permission to restore his companions to the human shape. Circe will grant the request if the men themselves desire it. Gryllus, one of them, is brought forward to answer in behalf of the entire company. He refuses, and gives his reasons. He says that by making him and his companions beasts, Circe has done them a great favour. Beasts have more fortitude than men; they fight in fair, open combat, without trick or artifice; they are no cowards, they never cry for mercy. Beasts are courageous and daring, even the females; while the courage of men is artificial, and women are timid. Beasts are more temperate and chaste then man; they indulge their appetites only in a natural way, and at the proper season. Beasts do not value silver or gold. They have no adventitious desire. Their senses are more accurate. Beasts are satisfied with one kind of food, and this procured without difficulty; they have nature for their teacher, and could teach men many useful lessons. Men are incontinent: they indulge unnatural and excessive appetites; and are never satisfied.

In the opening scene to this unusual book, these obstructive entities are brought to life and engage in lively argument. Four essays on Hamlet, Macbeth, Antony and Cleopatra and Coriolanus follow, all of which freshen the air- unfamiliar, unspecialised, free-ranging and openly argumentative, but tied at all points to the original text. Shakespeare wrote out of, and about, a common humanity, and it is with humanity, common and uncommon, that we must read or watch him. This book is accordingly addressed to the academic or the new student.

Book excerpt: "Magnanimity: Heart, Soul, & Leader" is a thought-provoking book that delves into the examination of ancient figures and how their principles of magnanimity, heart, soul, and leadership can be applied in the modern world. The book challenges traditional perspectives by exploring the contributions of black historical figures and female thinkers, providing a more complete and nuanced understanding of leadership. From the empires of the Egyptians and Persians, to the Greeks, Romans, and beyond, the leaders of these societies have much to teach us about the qualities that define a true leader. The book is a must-read for anyone looking to gain a deeper understanding of leadership and how to apply these principles in their own lives.

Concepts are helpful, but they can only point to the Truth; they are not the Truth in and of themselves. Words like “Spirituality “Transformation,” “Humanity,” and “Meditation” can help us draw a map of the journey to Awakening, and that map can help shorten the journey by minimizing distractions and wrong turns, but no words can convey the actual experience of Enlightenment by Own.
