Book excerpt: At times hilarious, at other times thoughtful, this book is more than an account of a family which goes to live on a farm. The events described here took the Sherry’s deep into a terra incognita of the spirit as well as the land. It is that quality: the sense of adventure and of patterns being broken which gives Maggie’s Farm a flavor all its own.

Book excerpt: This book presents the stories of the first six generations of the Richardson branch of the author's family in North America. The story begins in 1774 when John Richardson travels from Yorkshire, England to what became Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada. Settling on land originally homesteaded by politically displaced Acadians, John and two subsequent generations of Christopher's spend their lives farming in Sackville. In 1883, Robert Hay, John's great grandson, moves his family from their farm in Sackville to a homestead 3 miles east of Custer City, South Dakota in the heart of the Black Hills. While failing in its goal of saving Robert's wife Annie from Tuberculosis, it brought our family to the American West. After his death in 1897, three of Robert's sons, Fred, Bob, and Will, joined forces to create the Richardson Brothers Ranch in the Big Muddy Valley in what is now Sheridan County, Montana.

Book excerpt: Being a motivational speaker for fourteen years has taught me that a most effective way to reach your audience is through down to earth story telling. Nothing is more memorable as said story being true. All my life my siblings and I have swapped both true and fictional accounts that molded and shaped our morals, standards and spiritual beliefs. This book is a collection of ghost stories, tragedies and historical accounts of violence and physical abuse. Many of these stories were shared late at night in a lonely Victorian ranch house, cheers.

A former schoolmate seeks her professional help when her husband of eleven years abruptly walks out. Maggie and Sandy MacNair have not seen each other since Sandy's wedding. The sudden appearance of her school mate awakens Maggie's dormant memories of life on her parent's farm and suddenly Maggie's well-ordered life falls apart.

Book excerpt: 'She was small, she was slight, with limber hands and fingers and white and consonant teeth; hazel was the colour of her eyes, and she wore size three shoes on her high-arched feet. There was more, though, more than pigmentation, more than fineness of form and feature: she was the repository of winning ways, as if all the graces had devolved on her...' Thus did John Sanford write of Marguerite Roberts, the 'Maggie' of this lyrical and moving memoir. His wife for more than half a century, she was a screen-writer of much distinction and one of the highest-paid in Hollywood. With uncommon generosity and with an unflagging belief in Sanford's ability, she supported him through the writing of his twenty books, all of them acclaimed by the critics but overlooked by the public. He has been called 'the undiscovered treasure of American literature'.

Book excerpt: The main character was a real person known to the author as a friend in his youth. That part of the story is true, but most of his stories after his youth is fictional. Danny was born to immigrant parents in the small town of Kiel, Wisconsin, with population a little over three thousand, but Dan went on to achieve success in his life. A humble soul, he never aspired greatness, though he would have been capable of it. He eventually married his lovely childhood girlfriend after horrendous experiences in the war, and he went on to have a successful career. This is a love story and a war story, and it illustrates a high sense of moral values and deep devotion and patriotism to his country and, like many of his comrades, a life well lived. As a veteran of WWII, the author draws on his experiences and knowledge of the war in the southwest Pacific.

Book excerpt: Pap set off to one side just listenin' to both sides of that conversation. He had a real big smile on his face, but he had nothin' to say. Finally, I said, 'I'd be most interested to hear what you got to say on the matter, Pap.' 'A man has a few choices to make during his life. If you make good choices, you turn out like Otis. You make bad choices you end up somethin' less.' 'Lately, I've been worryin' if I'm even smart enough to know the difference. You and Otis just appear to come by it natural.' Pap said, 'A little worry can go a long way in the makin' of a man.' Then Pap went back to sippin' his coffee, and he was done talkin'. That old boy was always doin' that to me. Just give me enough to think on and then go real quiet again before I had the full answer. It was a time of great adventure and great danger around every bend. For Matt Dobson, it was a time to become a man. With the guidance of good friends and good family, Matt is challenged with a tough road to travel. As Matt learns about integrity, courage, and love, will he be able to meet hisHigh Expectations? Travel back in our nation's history to the Old West, when a man made his own opportunities. In the second book of the Pap Franklin series, follow along as Matt Dobson tries to become the next great member of his family.

Book excerpt: Delta Song, a three-part novel, is set above Vicksburg in the Mississippi Delta on the river. The action takes place with two plantations, Riverside, owned by Abraham Fair, and Green Rivers, owned by Abraham's sister, Vergie Anderson, and in a settlement along the river, informally presided over by Fred Anderson, Vergie's son. Sarah Kingsley, a farm woman, and her family are connected with both plantations. The novel is broken into a series of interconnected novellas, by using page breaks marked by dashes to make it hang together, while reminding readers that it is a kind of symphony, the song of the Delta, of various stories told by Magdalene (Maggie), as she recalled her coming of age in the Delta in light of Fred's death on the eve of the Civil Rights Movement, a time when Maggie, Fred, Father William, and a small group of youngsters virtually carry on their own reformation. The violent and tragic aftermath remind them of their own humanity and teach them their own self-identity. The river setting provides an opportunity for the romantic mysticism and pagan sensuality which runs through the novel. the novel is framed around the opening scene of Maggie's returning to Vicksburg for Fred's funeral, and the closing scene of her recognician of how the river freed him (and implicitly her and Father William). The material is a series of memoirs recalling who Fred was in Maggie's life, and leading to her final flash of recognician. Read this way, the novel becomes a kind of Bildungsroman, in which a young girl grows to womanhood, and then exile, and views her formative experiences from the sad, but liberating, standpoint of her exile. The series of vignettes are echoed to read like music, the song of the Delta.

Book excerpt: When Paul Ashford Harris receives a phone call to say his childhood home has burned to the ground, he begins a fascinating journey to reclaim the history of his eccentric family and its relationship to New Zealand from the beginning of colonisation. We meet his highly respectable Victorian grandfather, Sir Percy Harris, an eminent member of the House of Commons. His grandmother, the highly bohemian Lady Frieda Harris, an artist, suffragette, friend of Emily Pankhurst, and the infamous occultist Aleister Crowley, for whom she painted the famous Thoth Tarot cards. Then there’s his eternally distant parents, whose idea of parenthood was giving birth as swiftly as possible, immediately appointing a nanny and arranging a couple of satisfactory boarding schools. Taking you on a remarkable journey from the politics of London’s East End, to the early years of the Australian gold rush and rise and fall of the family business Bing Harris, Odd Boy Out is at its core a poignant memoir that examines the legacy you are given – whether good or bad – and how it shapes you into the person you are today.
