Smith in 1903, "I take this opportunity of writing to ask you if I can get my endowments and also finish the work I have begun for my dead.... Your sister in the Gospel, Jane E. James." A faithful Latter-day Saint since her conversion sixty years earlier, James had made this request several times before, to no avail, and this time she would be just as unsuccessful, even though most Latter-day Saints were allowed to participate in the endowment ritual in the temple as a matter of course. James, unlike most Mormons, was black. For that reason, she was barred from performing the temple rituals that Latter-day Saints believe are necessary to reach the highest degrees of glory after death. A free black woman from Connecticut, James positioned herself at the center of LDS history with uncanny precision. After her conversion, she traveled with her family and other converts from the region to Nauvoo, Illinois, where the LDS church was then based. There, she took a job as a servant in the home of Joseph Smith, the founder and first prophet of the LDS church. When Smith was killed in 1844, Jane found employment as a servant in Brigham Young's home. These positions placed Jane in proximity to Mormonism's most powerful figures, but did not protect her from the church's racially discriminatory policies. Nevertheless, she remained a faithful member until her death in 1908. Your Sister in the Gospel is the first scholarly biography of Jane Manning James or, for that matter, any black Mormon. Quincy D. Newell chronicles the life of this remarkable yet largely unknown figure and reveals why James's story changes our understanding of American history.

Images of the original documents from the Blount County Court House were examined page by page and transcribed. Not only was the primary information recorded, but other significant details were gathered such as names of bondsmen, names of officials performing the ceremony, names and relationships of those granting permission, and the location of the ceremony. Plus, volumes and page numbers were recorded to provide for better documentation. Additionally, details of all licenses returned unexecuted were recorded. This book also contains those marriages recorded at the satellite Blount County court house at Bangor covering the years 1893 to 1901. This book is a handy tool for those with ancestors in Blount County, or those with ancestors in sections of Blount which became Cullman County.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toronto's Last Rainbow paints a nostalgic portrait of Toronto in a bygone era from the point of view of one central neighbourhood. It catches the spirit of the times just ahead of the feminist era. With poignancy and humour it follows an amazing cast of real and imaginary residents, each with a strong and unique voice, each human and fallible, through their daily lives. This book features serious issues of the time such as the lack of access to safe abortion, and the growing number of divorces. Then, most mothers stayed at home. Parents had the time to organize for their children annual events like the Summerhill Fair with free candy floss and donkey rides in the summer, and Halloween in late fall. However, feminist issues were stirring, family life would be changing; women were looking to work outside the home and showing a growing interest in non-traditional areas of work. Residents then faced issues like bullying, suicide, and a violent crime in the neighbourhood, that resonate today. During 1969, Canada became officially bilingual; the important Morgentaler decision started the nation's move towards safe abortion. Toronto's citizens elected a new city government, devoted to a changed concept of development; turning away from building expressways across the city centre. This pivotal year saw the start of a twenty-year era of progress for the (then) City of Toronto....

Book excerpt: In 1937, the Japanese invaded the Chinese city of Shanghai. The neutral Shanghai International Settlement, where Margaret and her family lived, became a gudao (lone islet) of safety from the savagery of the Japanese soldiers. But soon the foreign citizens were interned. This heart-wrenching story, told in the voice of a young girl, brings new insights to a violent period.
