Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1480s, the great Italian Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli was commissioned by Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de' Medici to make a series of drawings to illustrate Dante's Divine Comedy. Botticelli gave stunning visual form to the poet's epic journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise, but the project was never completed and the sheets were scattered. Now, more than 500 years after their creation, all 91 existing -- and very fragile -- vellum sheets will be shown together for the first time, in Berlin, Rome, and London. This book, which accompanies the exhibition, illustrates each of Botticelli's canto sheets in superb color, faced by a commentary on Botticelli's pictorial response to Dante's poem by Hein-Thomas Schulze Altcappenberg of the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin, where 84 of the sheets are permanently housed. Eight essays on Botticelli, the Medici, and the Divine Comedy complete this unprecedented volume.

Book excerpt: The celebrated allegorical paintings La Primavera and The Birth of Venus were the source of Sandro Botticelli's rediscovery in both the 16th and 19th centuries, and are still regarded as apogees of Florentine Renaissance painting. In this volume, the author examines these and other paintings of mythological content by the artist. He retells the stories of classical antiquity from which so many of Botticelli's motifs derive, equipping the reader with tools to appreciate the narrative quality of the artist's works. Descriptions of Botticelli's artistic virtuosity and explanations as to the important role the artist played in Renaissance painting are accompanied by reproductions of the highest quality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Botticelli is a painter not of facts, but of ideas, and his pictures are not so much a representation of certain objects as a pattern of forms. Nor is his colouring rich and lifelike; it is subordinated to form, and often rather a tinting than actual colour. In fact, he was interested in the abstract possibilities of his art rather than in the concrete. For example, his compositions, as has just been said, are a pattern of forms; his figures do not actually occupy well-defined places in a well-defined area of space; they do not attract us by their suggestion of bulk, but as shapes of form, suggesting rather a flat pattern of decoration. Accordingly, the lines which enclose the figures are chosen with the primary intention of being decorative. It has been said that Botticelli, “though one of the worst anatomists, was one of the greatest draughtsmen of the Renaissance.” As an example of false anatomy we may notice the impossible way in which the Madonna’s head is attached to the neck, and other instances of faulty articulation and incorrect form of limbs may be found in Botticelli’s pictures. Yet he is recognised as one of the greatest draughtsmen: he gave to ‘line’ not only intrinsic beauty, but also significance. In mathematical language, he resolved the movement of the figure into its factors, its simplest forms of expression, and then combined these various forms into a pattern which, by its rhythmical and harmonious lines, produces an effect upon our imagination, corresponding to the sentiments of grave and tender poetry that filled the artist himself. This power of making every line count in both significance and beauty distinguishes the great master- draughtsmen from the vast majority of artists who used line mainly as a necessary means of representing concrete objects.

Book excerpt: Botticelli's art has proved more magnetic to historians and critics during the past hundred years than that of any other fifteenth century painter. His linear evocations of feminine grace and beauty, epitomized in his celebrated allegorical compositions 'Primavera' and 'The Birth of Venus', have entered the repertory of potent and immediately recognizable images, representing the classical ideal of the Italian Renaissance. His celestially serene Madonnas and sweet-tempered angels have become inseparable from the notion of religious sublimity and devotion in the quattrocento. Susan Legouix offers a fresh and stimulating account of the art and the world of Botticelli. She charts the development of Botticelli's style, his growing assurance and his ultimate adoption of an almost backward-looking, Gothic but deeply personal idiom. The demands of his public commissions for churches and their effect upon his style are measured and balanced against his private modes, especially his illustrations for Dante's Divine Comedy, which confirm his genius as a draughtsman and an interpreter. Special attention is also paid to the shifting taste of succeeding centuries and the Victorian revival of interest in Botticelli's work which has raised him to the position of one of the supreme if also most enigmatic masters of western art.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sandro Botticelli Esides acknowledging my general indebtedness to Mr. Horne for the amount that I have derived, in statements of fact, from his exhaustive book on Botticelli, I have to thank him for his kindness to me in Florence. Among other benefits, I owe to him a visit, made in his company, to the Annunciation which he discovered in the chapel of the Corrigendi. From my conversations with him I anticipate that he will show more indulgence than others who know less about Botticelli to my dissent in certain points fi'om the conclusions at which he hintself has arrived. The purpose of the book being to estimate the work of Botticelli as far as possible as a contemporary fact, I have not elaborated these points of difference the chief of which in its effect upon my view of Botticelli is that I attach greater importance to certain of the later pictures which are generally neglected as being mere products of his school. I owe thanks also to my friend and colleague Mr. Eluc maclagan for criticism, as charitable as it was valuable, when the Introduction was in proof. I am.
